A
B)By the time Robert Porter Allen was born in 1905, the
whooping crane(鸣鹤) was already in trouble. The beautiful bird was once commonly
found across North America. By 1941, the whooping crane population had dwindled
to the double digits. The tallest species in North America were critically endangered.
In the 1940's, the remaining cranes migrated (迁徙) every year from the Gulf
Coast of Texas to somewhere in the north of Canada to breed ( 繁 殖 ) . The
conservation community didn't know where the birds went. The wetlands where they
used to spend winters were growing rarer and rarer as they were dried and built on,
and the birds were dying in large numbers on the long migration flight. A tiny, non
migrating group of whooping cranes was alive in Louisiana in 1941, but the group
had disappeared by the time Allen started his research.
In 1942, Allen undertook the whooping crane project. Over the next three years,
he did almost constant field work that took him from Texas up the cranes' migration
route to Nebraska, and on into Saskatchewan in search of the nesting ground of the
birds.
Studying the bird in its breeding habitat and seeing how many birds were born
would allow conservationists to understand how to help the birds on their journey. But
finding the whooping crane's nesting site meant difficult and fruitless air searches
over northern Canada.
In 1952, Allen wrote a report on the whooping crane. The report was a warning
call to the conservation community:only 33 migrator? “whoopers” remained, and
their nesting site still hadn't been found. Two years later, the whooping crane's
breeding grounds in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park were finally found, and
Allen headed north to study them firsthand,an “incredibly difficult journey,” in
Sprunt's words. Allen's work laid the groundwork for conservationists to save the
birds.
Their efforts paid off as the numbers reached 57 by 1970 and 214 by 2005. Today,
the whooping crane is still listed as endangered, but there are roughly 600 birds alive.

For the first time since local extinction in 1996, Nubian giraffes have returned to
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve in northeastern Uganda.Fifteen of this critically
endangered animals were moved over 400km from Murchison Falls National Park in
October 2019.
The 11 female and 4 male giraffes are aged two to four:“We chose younger
giraffes because they have a longer reproductive lifespan,” says Robert Aruho,
veterinarian for Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), who led the move.
Northern Uganda is home to Nubian giraffes. They have large, rectangular
blotches (矩形斑点) set irregularly against a cream background. The lower legs are
noticeably white and not patterned. Pian Upe's grassy land held large numbers of
giraffes in the 1960s before conflict in the Karamoja region saw them hunted
illegally.“The habitat is perfect, and effective antihunting measures are now capable
of supporting at least 700 individuals,” explains Aruho.
Nubian giraffes are Uganda's only giraffe species and most of them inhabit
Murchison Falls. “We can't have all our eggs in one basket,” he says. “We have
a unique opportunity to act now to prevent them dying out.”
Back in 2015, UWA moved 15 Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls to Lake
Mburo National Park. After that, 9 of the 10 females quickly became pregnant. From
a little over 300 Nubian giraffes in the mid1990s in Uganda, there are now about 1,
650. A further 25 giraffes will move from Murchison to Pian Upe in October 2020.
“In Uganda we continue to work closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to
increase numbers and populations of threatened Nubian giraffes. Boosting existing
4/8
populations is vital for securing their future in the country,” said Steph Fennessy,
Director Twiga Ⅱ Operation for giraffes at GCF in Uganda.
5.Why were younger giraffes moved to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve?
A.Because they were in greater danger than the older.
B.Becasue it was easier for them to adapt to new habitat.
C.Because next years they would probably reproduce more.
D.Because it cost less to move younger giraffes there.
根据第二段中的“we chose younger giraffes because they
6.What can we know about Nubian giraffes?
A.There are large blotches on their lower legs.
B.At least 700 individuals are left in Uganda.
C.Humans' activities once threatened them.
D.Most of them are living in Pian Upe's grassy land.
根据第三段中的“...before conflict in the Karamoja region
saw them hunted illegally.”
7.What does the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph mean?
A.Giraffes often fight each other if living together.
B.Different measures have been taken.
C.Giraffes should live in different pla ces.
D.Other endangered species also need protecting.
由上句中的“most of them inhabit Murchison Falls”可知,
8.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Nubian giraffes move house
B.What's about Nubian giraffes?
C.Nubian giraffes are dying out
D.Nubian giraffes return to Uganda
There are hundreds of publishers across the world
and millions of books get printed every year. Moreover, a book can be printed by
several polishers. 1 .
To overcome the problem of identifying books, publishers have come up with a
unique numbering system. For instance, if 50 , 000 copies of The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes are printed by a publisher at one time (called an edition), all of them
are identified by one number code. 2 and your address begins with your house
number, street, locality, state and ends with a statement of the country where you live.
An ISBN book number achieves a similar aim of identifying and tracing a book.
If you pick up any book, turn it around you will see a number which looks
something like this—ISBN 9070002345.This is called the ISBN number. ISBN
stands for International Standard Book Numbering. 3 .The ISBN number is
divided into four groups that are separated by a space or a hyphen.
The first part of the ISBN identifies the country and is called the Group Identifier.
4 .The second part is called the Publisher Prefix. The Publisher Prefix is used to
identify the publisher of the book. The Publisher Prefix may contain up to seven
digits.
The third part identifies the title and the edition of the book and so is called the
Title Identifier, which may consist of up to six digits. 5 .Since you can have the
same book from the same publisher but with different editions, the Title Identifier
helps to differentiate between them.
6/8
The fourth and the final part is called the Check digit, a single digit (from 0 to 9)
used to check whether the given ISBN number is correct or wrong. If an ISBN
number is incorrect, this means that the book is a version printed illegally.
A.It may consist of up to five digits
B.So what can the ISBN number do for you
C.This makes the task of identifying a book very difficult
D.It is a numbering system that is used to describe the book
E.Book publishers often come out with newer and updated versions of earlier
books
F . The number Code is your home address that can only be shared by your
parents
G.The ISBN numbering system helps book stores and book publishers to handle
categorize to handle, categorize, store and identify books easily

The number Code is your home address that can only be shared by your parents
根据前文“ISBN stands for International Standard Book
Numbering.” It is a numbering system
that is used to describe the book
根据下文“The Publisher Prefix is used to identify the
7/8
publisher of the book. The publisher prefix may contain up to seven digits.”
It may
consist of up to five digits 故选 A 项。]
根据下文“Since you can have the same book from the
same publisher but with different editions, the Title Identifier helps to differentiate
between them.”
Book publishers often come out with newer and updated
versions of earlier books

Dear Jack,
How is your online business? Could you do me a favor?
My grandfather is a wellknown craftsman. He is an expert at making traditional
Chinese clay figures like Guan Yu, Jiang Ziya, Nezha. Each figure is made of clay, 2
inches in size, which is painted in different colours.
With various facial expressions, the clay figures are lifelike, each enjoying an

interesting story. For example, Chinese people like Guan Yu, thinking he can drive out
evil spirits and keep people safe. Here is a picture of each figure. I will write an
introduction of each figure and pack it in a beautiful gift box.
By the way, I can supply them at $1 each, and you can sell them at a proper price.
Hoping it will benefit both of us. Thanks!
