IV 阅读理解 A For many people, the name Baskin-Robbins is linked to sweet memories of eating ice cream. Irvine Robbins, who helped create this famous company, died in May at the age of ninety. His life’s work of making fun and exciting ice cream flavors changed the way Americans enjoy this food. Irvine Robbins opened his first ice cream store in 1945 in California. At the time, there were no stores that sold only ice cream. His sister’s husband, Burton Baskin, also opened his own ice cream stores. In 1948 they combined their six stores into one business. Baskin and Robbins realized that they were too busy to operate each store well. So, they decided to sell part of each operation to the manager of that store. This permitted the company to grow quickly. By 1953, they renamed their company Baskin-Robbins. They advertised that they sold 31 kinds of ice cream to show the many choices buyers had. There was one flavor for every day of the month. Robbins and Baskin sold “Lunar Cheesecake” the day after astronauts landed on the moon in 1969. Other flavors included “ChaChaCha”, for cherry chocolate chip, and Robbins' personal favorite “Jamoca Almond Fudge”. They said, “We sell fun, not just ice cream.” By 1967, there were 500 Baskin-Robbins stores in the United States. The business partners sold their company that year. Today, there are more than 5,800 Baskin-Robbins stores around the world. 1.What is the best title of the passage? A.The managers of Baskin-Robbins. B.The start of Baskin-Robbins. A.They sold not only ice cream, but fun. B.They renamed their company. C.They put all their hearts into the business. D.They sold “Lunar Cheesecake”. 4.It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that______. A.Jamoca Almond Fudge is Baskins’ favourite B.Cherry chocolate chip sells best C.Robbins and Baskin were good at inventing new ice creams D.Lunar cheesecake was invented for the astronauts B When a couple decides to marry, they naturally inform both sets of parents and stepparents before having a party planned or telling all their friends. The days are long gone of the man going trembling to the girl’s father and saying, “Sir, may I have the honor of having the hand of your daughter in marriage?” However, a wise couple always discusses their plans for marriage with their respective families, and a young man often suggests a “financial talk” with his future father-in-law before the latter is faced with the embarrassment of asking for one. Even if a young woman has supported herself and lives away from home, her parents have the right to know how her fiancé proposes to handle the long-range financing of their family and home. The fiancé should state his income, his savings, and his future expectations, without overstating any of them. Engagement parties are given by the parents of the bride-to-be or by a relative of the bride acting for her parents, usually just before the newspaper announcement of the engagement. If the bride-to-be and her fiancé live in a city other than her parents, it is better for her parents to go to the city than her to go home to them for the engagement party. She and her fiancé will, after all, be partied in her parents’ hometown during the wedding festivities. However, if the family home is not far away, it is proper for the engaged couple to travel there for the announcement party. The young man’s family should be invited, too. If the bride’s parents are no longer living, then a relative or a close friend can give the party. It is usually a simple cocktail’s party, champagne served for toasts to the engaged couple. If the party is very large, the engaged couple and the girl’s parents might form a receiving line — but they do not have to. The bride-to-be usually wears her engagement ring officially for the first time on this occasion. If she has a gift for the groom-to-be, she gives it to him right before or after the engagement party. For Americans, the traditional engagement ring is a diamond solitaire (单粒宝石). However, today anything goes — a ring with many colored stones, a ring with a large semi-precious stone, an heirloom (传 家宝) ring reset in a modern design, or even a stone in the bride’s family, simply reset in a Tiffany setting. The wedding ring will be of the same metal as the engagement ring. Some girls prefer no engagement ring but choose a wedding band that is decorated with stones instead. No one has to have an engagement ring. A girl may want her fiancé to give her a pearl necklace instead, or a jeweled watch. Jeweled rings can be given as gifts on many occasions during the married lives — such as wedding anniversaries, the birth of a child, or an important job promotion. 5. According to the first paragraph, young men . A. must tell all their friends before planning a party B. used to feel afraid of going to meet their girl friends’ parents C. must promise that their family could support them D. must guarantee they live away from home already 6. A. The bride-to-be and her fiancé will have to wait in line with both of their parents. B. If the girl’s parents are dead, a relative or a close friend gives a party on their behalf. C. The engagement party is usually given before the newspaper announcement. D. It’s no longer necessary to give a diamond solitaire as the engagement ring. 8. We can infer from the last paragraph that . A. a young man can give his wife a jeweled watch on the birthday of their child B. the heirloom must be reset in a modern design C. the engagement ring and the wedding ring are different D. some girls don’t mind what they are given for the engagement C A research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behaviour when they are watched. Do you? A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box. Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behaviour. Their report also referred to other researches showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans, and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realising it. It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning. The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption “I Want You”. It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese. 9. The underlined word “coded” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to . A. hidden B. programmed C. forgotten D. learned 10. What is the text mainly about? A. It describes changed behaviour when observed. B. It details ways to control people's behaviour. C. It tells how to make people work harder. D. It discusses different advertising methods. 11. According to the text, which of the following statements is true? A. People pretend to behave better when they are watched. B. Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone. C. People donate more money when they feel they are watched. D. Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster. 12. Where would the study described in the text most likely be found? A.
