英语学科 新世纪版 Unit 5 Music Reading (period 1) – Arturo Toscanini 单 元 情 况 单元信息 高一年级第二学期 Unit 5 Music 各课时名称 课时 1:[理解文本主题] 课时 2:[走进艺术大师] 课时 3:[掌握语法现象] 课时 4:[语言学习活动] 课时 5:[拓展主题阅读] 课时 6:[单元项目输出] Content: Unit 5 Music – Arturo Toscanini Students’ Grade: Senior 1 Type of lesson: Reading (period 1) Time Duration: 40 min Instructor: 【教材分析】 本课 Arturo Toscanini 是新世纪高中一年级第二学期 Unit 5 Music 的第一个阅读语篇。 新世纪 Book 2 Unit 5 的主题为音乐,介绍了几位在音乐领域有突出贡献的指挥家、作曲 家和歌唱家,涵盖了人与自我、人与社会的主题语境。学生不仅要能了解语篇特征,获 取事实信息,还需要在学习过程中观察和赏析语篇中包括的审美元素,获得审美体验, 形成对语言和事物的感知力。学生要仔细观察生活;理解艺术事件的语篇描述;并就同 样话题进行准确表达;学会用英语表达自己对音乐艺术的感受和看法,陶冶情操。 本课时是该单元的第一课时。文本以记叙文语篇的形式介绍了著名的意大利指挥 家阿尔图罗·托斯卡尼尼(Arturo Toscanini)的生平故事,从托斯卡尼尼的杰出成就、 学习经历、对音乐的热爱、对工作的热情和执着的政治立场几个角度对其进行了全面的 刻画。文章语言难度适中,结构较为清晰,但是学生对于文本中关于交响乐的专业新词 汇的理解和发音存在一定的困难。 【学情分析】 本课时的授课对象为晋元高级中学高一 8 班的学生,他们的接受能力和理解能力比 较强,善于思考,乐于表达。他们英语基础扎实,总体语言能力较好,但是存在一定的 差异。经过近一年的高中英语学习,学生具备一定的文章阅读能力,能够通过略读、扫 读等策略把握文本结构,理解文本内容,但就信息内容进行深度阅读和分析的能力还有 待提高。就课时主题来说,对于“音乐大师”这个话题和内容的理解方面,是学生感兴 趣的话题,但大部分学生对音乐领域未必有深入了解;同时学生的人生经历和社会经验 相对单薄,如何让他们理解托斯卡尼尼成功背后的原因,需要教师给予充分的指导。总 的来说,学生有较好的学习习惯,能够在教师的引领下开展合作学习,主动提升文化意 识和学习能力。 【Teaching objectives】 By the end of the lesson, the students are expected to  obtain the basic and factual information of Arturo Toscanini such as his life story, works, outstanding qualities and etc through teacher-student interaction and deduction.  grasp the meaning of some words and phrases related to the topic: symphony, orchestra, conductor, baton,score, drop one’s baton, at very short notice and etc.  develop Ss’ reading strategies such as skimming and scanning through spotting key words, table-filling, blank-filling, question-answering and etc.  guide Ss to master the basic elements when introducing a person: nationality, life period, representative works, general comment, education, career experience, political outlook, and shining qualities.  analyze the shining points in Arturo Toscanini and therefore be inspired to set Toscanini as their role model and learn from his legendary life. 【Teaching key and difficult points】  Read the lines and between and beyond the lines to fully understand the text.  Strengthen the awareness and ability of critical reading, therefore developing students’ critical and creative thinking. 【Teaching aids】 Multi-media, chalk, board, a video clip (the television concert: Aida) 【Teaching procedure】 Stages Learning activities Purposes Pre-reading (Lead in) (1) Watch the video clip – the television concert: Aida (2) Introduce some topic-related new words such as symphony, orchestra, conductor, baton and etc. to elicit the topic and arouse Ss’ interest While-reading Step 1 Scan the whole text for Toscanini’s nationality, profession, life period, representative works and general comment. Step 2 Scan Para.B and find out the related information of his education (specific year and event) to fill in the table. Step 3 (1) Skim the text and find out the related information of his career experience (specific year and event) to fill in the  to help Ss obtain the basic and factual information of Arturo Toscanini  to develop Ss’ reading strategies such as skimming and scanning key words, table-filling, blank-filling, question-answering and etc. table. (2) Instruct Ss to spot some key phrases indicating time: ① adverbial of time: at the age of nineteen (Para.3);②number of year: in 1954(Para.I) (3) Figure out the meaning of the phrase “drop his baton”.[retire] Step 4 (1) Scan Para.C and answer the following questions: a. Was Toscanini’s performance in Brazil a success or not? b. Was his success expected in advance or not? How do you know it? c. What was audience’s reaction to him before and after his performance? (2) Figure out the meaning of the phrase “at very shoty notice”.[even though he was not prepared for the performance] (3) Analyze the significance of this tour in his whole-life career. Step 5 Scan Para.D and summarize his outstanding qualities. Step 6 Scan Para.E and figure out his way of interpreting music. . (1) Find one key phrase to summarize his ways of interpreting music. (make use of every means) (2) Ask Ss to circle out verbal phrases. (3) Have Ss perform the actions in one specific situation. Step 7 (1) Scan Para.F & G and answer the following questions: a. Is Toscanini a strict conductor? b. Who was he strcit with? (2) Find evidence and fill in the following blanks.( Appendix 1) Step 8 (1) Scan Para.H to find the information about his political outlook. (2) Briefly introduce “Fascism”. (3) Ask Ss the question: Was Toscanini physically attacked for his anti-fascism? Post-reading (1) Review the aspects the author uses to depict the life of Toscanini. (2) Discussion and reflection: Have Ss describe Toscanini in their eyes and find the supporting details in the text. (Example is given)  to guide Ss to master the basic elements when introducing a person  to develop Ss’ habit of digging deep into the reading material by reflecting and commenting; at the same time, Ss practice their speaking. Assignment Ask students to choose his or her assignment based on their “self-reflection” after class. Finish the “self-reflection”. (Appendix 2) Put your understanding of reasons behind the success of great artists into a paragraph.
