Teaching methods:
To apply Reading-Thinking-Speaking Teaching Model.
Teaching procedures:
I. Lead in
Make a survey on the mobile phones.
Q1: Who has got a mobile phone?
Q2: Who thinks mobile phones are necessary in our life?
Q3: Who can live without using the mobile phones?
Ss: No.
T: Actually, there’s such kind of people. Today, we’re going to read a newspaper article about them.
II. Reading and thinking
1. Reading for the main idea
Q1: Where can you get the main idea quickly when reading a newspaper article?
(From the instruction, title and the first paragraph.)
Q2: What’s the passage mainly about?
(It’s mainly about the Amish who reject most modern technology and the disadvantages of using the
phones.)
T has a brief introduction of the Amish by a relevant picture.
(The Amish belong to a Christian group who live in the USA.)
2. Reading for the details
1) Read silently for 3 minutes and answer the following questions.
Q1: What kinds of modern technology are rejected by the Amish? Why?
(They’re cars, TVs, refrigerators and telephones.
The Amish reject cars because they like having tight communities where everyone lives close
together.
They have no TVs or refrigerators because their homes do not have electricity--they do not think it is
necessary and dislike dealing with strangers, such as the people who work at the electric company.
They reject using the phones because of the following reasons:
1. They cannot see each other face to face by using the phones.
2. They cannot stay together and share life.
3. It interrupts the family time and destroys the personal peace.
4. It interrupts your conversation and wastes your precious time.
5. It makes the relationships shallow and sacrifices the real relationship.)
(T offers the timely help on the difficult words and expressions to the Ss when necessary.)
T: Since the writer has pointed out so many disadvantages in using the phones, do you think he
opposes using the mobile phones? Why or why not?
Q2: Do you think the writer opposes using the phones? Why or why not?
Ss: No, he still wants to use the mobile phone.
T: Where can you find the clue?
Ss: From the last paragraph. Sorry, I have to go. The phone's ringing ...
III. Speaking
T: That’s right. It shows that the writer is unsure about using the phones. That’s why he chose the
title “To phone or not to phone?” I think that’s a hard question for the writer. What about you?
Q: As high school students, what are your views on using the mobile phones? List out your reasons.
IV. Summary
T: Although we’re crazy about phones and cannot live without phones, we’re supposed to be the
master of phones instead of the slaves of the phones. We’re expected to use the phones in a proper
and wise way just like what the Amish do. They reject phones but they’ve got a telephone in each
community just for emergencies. That’s means they only use the phones when necessary.
V. Homework assignment
Write an essay entitled “My view on using the mobile phones” within 100 words. Use the
expressions you found useful in the passage when writing.
