Unit 7 Sherlock Holmes The First Period 【教学目标】 1.知识目标 (1)重点单词: rot, seek, confidential, upset, brewery, sob, packet, caution, straightforward, rob, commit, gather. (2)重点短语: twist into, die away, collect oneself, make do with sth. Step 2 Presentation Show the picture of "rot, seek, confidential, upset, brewery, sob, packet, caution, straightforward, rob, commit, gather" and ask students to describe them. Then write down the words on the board. Step 3 Reading First reading: ask students to read the passage "The Case of Identity" and find out the words that they don't know. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. Second reading: ask students to listen to the tape and read it again and think about the following questions: (1)Do you know who Sherlock Holmes is? (2)Have you read any stories about this "great" detective? Then ask students to answer the questions. Third reading: read the passage again and finish exercises in section 2. Step 4 Non-stop talk 1.Let's talk: Giving advice and making suggestions. 2.Sherlock Holmes was a wise man. Many people went to him for advice and/ or suggestions. Holmes was a well-educated person, and he was polite in making suggestions. Here are some of the appropriate expressions and phrases Holmes might have used. You could always... If I were you, I'd... I think it might be a good idea to... Why don't you...? Have you ever thought of…? I was wondering if you'd ever thought of... You'd better... I would say you could… I would suggest that you could... Work in pairs. Suppose one of you is Sherlock Holmes, and the other a client or customer who has come to Holmes’s office for advice. After listening to the story of the client, Holmes gives advice on what to do. Step 5 Writing Expressing yourself through writing: Writing creatively. Step 6 Summary Ask a student to summarize the content we learned today. Step 7 Homework 1.Listen to the radio. 2.Review the new words and sentences. 3.Read the text. Unit 7 Sherlock Holmes The Second Period 【教学目标】 1.知识目标 理解并掌握独立结构用法。 2.语言技能目标 正确应用独立结构进行英语表达。 3.情感态度、文化意识、学习策略 在“学生为主体”的思想指导下,让学生成为课堂的主人,形成有效的“生生互动”,“和 谐对话”,同时借助多媒体的优势使学生主动融入课堂教学情境之中,以调动学生积极性,激 发学生参与课堂的潜能,建立良好的课堂氛围,真正发挥情感教学的优势。 【教学重点】 独立结构用法的讲解。 【教学难点】 独立结构的理解与掌握。 【教学准备】 1.教师准备:多媒体课件、音响。 2.学生准备:课本及其他学习用品。 【教学过程】 Step 1 Warming up and greeting Daytime greeting to every student. Step 2 Presentation 1.In the last unit we discussed one kind of absolute construction: logical subject + verb- ing. If you look closely at the first text of this unit, you will find a sentence that contains this type of absolute construction: "Where?" he asked in a panicked voice, his eyes, full of suspension, darting around the room. 2.Now look at these sentences: (1)His homework finished, Li Ming watched TV for a while before he went to bed. (2)The exam over, the students rushed out of the classroom. (3)Jenny stood at the door, (her) hands in her pockets. (4)The floor wet and slippery, nobody wanted to go in the room. (4)The teacher came in, book in hand. From the above examples, we can see that an absolute construction can be formed in many different ways (logical subject + verb-ed/ adjective/ adverb/ preposition/ prepositional phrase/ noun). 3.However, we should bear in mind that an absolute construction functions as an adverbial of the main clause. Ask students to memorize this part for ten minus and then ask them to close books to explain the grammar from this part in their own words. Step 3 Danny's grammar questions: 1.The first text of this unit uses many link verbs. Examples: seems troubled… looking slightly puzzled and nervous. remain fixed on the floor. appeared surprised... remain silent. appeared surprised and more willing to get married... appear at ease. Can you find four more examples from the same text? 2.Look at this sentence from the text: "He told me that he was, and apologized for her taking up my time." What does the word her do in the sentence? After the discussion, students summarize the answers to the questions and make group presentations, then prepare to be evaluated by the teacher. Step 4 Fun of the Unit! Enjoy those fun stories in the book. Step 5 Summary and Homework Ask a student to summarize the grammar we learned today, and to finish other exercises this part in book. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. Second reading: ask students to listen to the tape and read it again and think about the following questions: (1)Would you like to know more about Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes? (2)How did they create and support each other? Then ask students to answer the questions. Read the passage "Sherlock Holmes - More Than a Literary Character" and think about the following questions. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. (1)Why are there still many fans of Sherlock Holmes worldwide? (2)Have you read any of Holmes' stories in Chinese? After the students have finished thinking about the problems, teacher emphasizes the important point or asks the students to answer the questions and checks the answers. Step 4 Summary Ask a student to summarize the content we learned today. Step 5 Homework 1.Listen to the radio. 2.Review the new words and sentences. 3.Read the text.
