Unit 6 Exploring Chinatown The First Period 【教学目标】 1.知识目标 (1)重点单词: explore, chorus, strait, greet, bay, seaweed, seagull, howl, tram, melon, firework, sideway, shaver, rooster, valley, slavery, politician, friction. (2)重点短语: pick out, every so often, be alive with, seek one’s fortune. Step 2 Presentation Show the picture of "explore, chorus, strait, greet, bay, seaweed, seagull, howl, tram, melon, firework, sideway, shaver, rooster, valley, slavery, politician, friction" and ask students to describe them. Then write down the words on the board. Step 3 Reading First reading: ask students to read the passage "Danny’s Visit to Chinatown" and find out the words that they don't know. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. Second reading: ask students to listen to the tape and read it again and think about the following questions: (1)What is Chinatown? (2)Do you know anything about it? Then ask students to answer the questions. Third reading: read the passage again and finish exercises in section 2. Step 4 Non-stop talk 1.Ask students to study the passage in groups. 2.Let's talk: Going on a vacation. 3.Read the following dialogue between Jenny and Jim, as they meet on their way to school. Jenny: Hi, Jim. I heard you and Tom were going away for your summer vacation. Jim: Yes, Jenny. We plan to go somewhere in early August. Jenny: That's great. Where are you planning to where you would like to go? Have you decided yet? Jim: We're not quite sure. We were thinking of taking a bicycle trip to Vancouver. Jenny: You mean you are going there by bike? Jim: Yes. We have heard and read a lot about Vancouver, but have not been there yet. We would like to visit places such as Stanley Park, English Bay, Gastown and, in particular, Chinatown. Jenny: That sounds like a fun summer, Jim. Jim: I hope so. By the way, are you going anywhere during the summer? Jenny: Yes, I plan to go with my dad to Toronto. Imagine you’re going somewhere during your summer vacation. Work in pairs. First role-play the dialogue. Then create your own dialogue. Step 5 Writing Expressing yourself through writing: Writing a descriptive essay about a place. Step 6 Summary Ask a student to summarize the content we learned today. Step 7 Homework 1.Listen to the radio. 2.Review the new words and sentences. 3.Read the text. Unit 6 Exploring Chinatown The Second Period 【教学目标】 1.知识目标 理解并掌握独立结构用法。 2.语言技能目标 正确应用独立结构进行英语表达。 3.情感态度、文化意识、学习策略 在“学生为主体”的思想指导下,让学生成为课堂的主人,形成有效的“生生互动”,“和 谐对话”,同时借助多媒体的优势使学生主动融入课堂教学情境之中,以调动学生积极性,激 发学生参与课堂的潜能,建立良好的课堂氛围,真正发挥情感教学的优势。 【教学重点】 独立结构用法的讲解。 【教学难点】 独立结构的理解与掌握。 【教学准备】 1.教师准备:多媒体课件、音响。 2.学生准备:课本及其他学习用品。 【教学过程】 Step 1 Warming up and greeting Daytime greeting to every student. Step 2 Presentation 1.Look at this sentence: When they arrived downtown, they could see dozens of sailboats out in English Bay, their brightly-coloured masts skimming over the blue waters. This sentence is different from anything we have seen or discussed so far. 2.Compare it with this sentence: They spent a day walking in Stanley Park, marveling at the huge trees and the view out to sea. In this sentence, walking in…, marveling at…are present participial phrases. Their logical subject is they (the subject of the whole sentence), and they provide more information about how they spent the day. 3.The whole participle phrase, their brightly-coloured masts skimming over the blue waters, is almost an independent sentence. However, it is not an independent sentence; it serves as an adverbial of the main clause. Ask students to memorize this part for ten minus and then ask them to close books to explain the grammar from this part in their own words. Step 3 Danny's grammar questions: 1.Look at this sentence from the text: "Danny didn't have to be told to look." What does the sentence mean? 2.What's the past form of the verb picnic? Can you find the answer from the text? After the discussion, students summarize the answers to the questions and make group presentations, then prepare to be evaluated by the teacher. Step 4 Fun of the Unit! Enjoy those fun stories in the book. Step 5 Summary and Homework Ask a student to summarize the grammar we learned today, and to finish other exercises this part in book. Then write down the words on the board. Step 3 Reading First reading: ask students to read the passage "The Story of Chinatown" and find out the words that they don't know. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. Second reading: ask students to listen to the tape and read it again and think about the following questions: Each Chinatown tells a different but similar story of first Chinese immigrants to North America. What does such a story tell us about human history? Then ask students to answer the questions. Read the passage "Chinatown Newspaper: Chinese World" and think about the following questions. Then teacher explains the words that they don't know. (1)Just imagine you have read a Chinese newspaper or magazine run by a Chinese community in North America, what might you get from it? (2)What do you think North American Chinese newspapers look like today? After the students have finished thinking about the problems, teacher emphasizes the important point or asks the students to answer the questions and checks the answers. Step 4 Summary Ask a student to summarize the content we learned today. Step 5 Homework 1.Listen to the radio. 2.Review the new words and sentences. 3.Read the text.
