A painter living on painting portraits is leading a poor life.
One day, a woman came by and found the painter’s painting so well that she liked it very much
and asked him to draw a portrait. They agreed on 2,000 dollars.
Before painting the portrait, the woman asked the painter to draw more accessories, like ear
rings, necklace, bracelet, etc. the painter felt so curious and asked why, the woman was unwilling to
explain. So the painter did not insist on asking any more. After a week, the portrait was done. The
woman came to take the painting as agreed on. At this moment, the woman hit on an evil idea of
bullying the unknown young artist. She thought, “The woman in the painting was me, if I don’t buy
the painting, nobody will buy it.”
“Why should I pay so much money for it?” so the woman said to the young painter: “I will
only pay 200 dollars to buy this painting.”
The young man was stunned, for he had never come across such experience. He was strongly
arguing against her, expecting this woman to keep the agreement and to be trustworthy.
“I can only pay 200 dollars to buy the painting, speak no more,” the woman thought she would
win for sure. “I asked you at last, will you sell it 200 dollars or not?”
The young painter knew the woman deliberately went back on her word, so he felt irritated. He
said in a firm voice, “No, I would prefer to keep this painting rather than be humiliated by you.
Today you break your word and someday you must pay 20 times for it.”
What a joke! 20 times will be 40,000! I won’t be stupid to pay 40,000 dollars to buy the
painting!”
“Well, we had better wait and see,” the young artist shouted to the woman who left angrily.
After the stimulation (刺激) of such an incident, the painter moved out of this sad place, studied
after acknowledged teachers and worked hard day and night. More than a dozen years later, he
finally blazed a new way and become popular in the circle of art. However, the woman had
forgotten the artist’s painting and words the next day.

Believe in Miracles
My friend Annette and I had decided to go to a writer’s conference over Valentine’s Day
weekend in Livermore, California. We were taking a mini vacation together and couldn’t have been
more excited. We wanted to get there the day before the conference and settle into our hotel
room.
The weather forecast was predicting high winds and rain, so we decided to take an early
morning train and then connect with a city bus to our hotel. We arrived early enough to enjoy
breakfast in the hotel. We even had the good fortune to be able to get our room. All was going well.
We were off to a perfect start.
Once in our room, the terrible storm hit the earth! The wind and rain made staying in the only
sensible option. As lunchtime approached, we decided to try a phone app that would bring almost
any restaurant’s food to us. We decided on hamburgers from a well-known chain.
The food-delivery app promised a 45-minute wait time. Forty-five minutes came and went, then
an hour, and then an hour and a half. After two hours, I called the restaurant.
They explained that our hamburgers were under a heat lamp the entire time, just waiting for the
driver. We canceled the order and decided to go out in an Uber car to continue our quest for
hamburgers.
The front-desk manager suggested a restaurant that had great hamburgers. So we took the Uber
car and set off. But when we arrived at the restaurant, we found it was closed due to the bad
weather. And our car had already left. We stood outside the building on that miserably cold and
wet day, trying to decide what to do next. Of course, the solution was easy: Just order another
Uber car.
I began digging in my purse for my phone, but it wasn’t there!
