Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda tries to answer these questions in his films.‎ His latest film, Shoplifters, is about his favorite topic –family relations. With this film, Koreeda won this year’s Palme d’Or (金棕榈奖), the Cannes Film Festival’s top honor.‎ Shoplifters tells the story of a poor family living in Tokyo. Three generations living under the ‎ same roof survive by stealing from local shops.‎ Obviously, what they are doing is wrong. But the director focuses more on the heartwarming details of the family’s daily life, according to The Playist. Koreeda shows how the family members love and support each other. For example, the family plans a beach trip for the youngest sister. They carefully pick out swimwear for the girl. At the beach, they play happily. The girl draws a picture to help her remember their time together. This causes viewers to forget about their moral judgments (道德审判).‎ This is another feature of Koreeda’s filming style. He is good at presenting ordinary life. It’s slow and full of small details – sometimes it’s even boring. But there is tension (冲突) present as well. In Shoplifters, the surprise is that the family members don’t actually have blood ties to each other, but they are still closer than a real family. They all have their own stories.‎ In Japan and most other Asian countries, blood ties are what defines (定义) family. But Koreeda questions that by looking at different kinds of relations.‎ ‎4. Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you'll earn later.‎ The idea that popularity could have a serious effect on one's earning potential(潜在性) shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The researchers found that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.‎ ‎“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you feel bad,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.‎ Maybe that's why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症). A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook's 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large number of social contacts.‎ But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency(货币)?‎ ‎“Call me uncoil, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition (定义) of ‘friend’.” said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.‎ Daum dislikes the idea that quantity trumps quality in the age of friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don't actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease (润滑) the wheels of life, she also warned, “Too bad one thing money can't buy is a real friend.”‎ ‎8. What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers?‎ A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune.‎ B. Social skills, talent, hard work and facebook.‎ C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune.‎ D. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.‎ ‎9. What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun?‎ A. They can help you with your schoolwork.‎ B. They teach you how to make more money.‎ C. They introduce their friends to you.‎ D. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer up.‎ ‎10. We learn that Meghan Daum's attitude towards friends is somewhat _____.‎ A. up-to-date B. traditional C. confused D. optimistic ‎11. What does the word “trumps” in the last paragraph mean?‎ A. is worse than B. is equal to C. is better than D. is similar to D If a woman has an extra piece of cake, don’t blame it on greed, blame it on her brain.‎ Scientists have found that women’s brains react to food very differently—and much more strongly—than men’s. Academics found that decades of dieting pressure on women and advertising have programmed certain parts of the female brain to react strongly when faced with any kind of food. Men, on the other hand, are not usually as obsessive (着迷的) about what they eat.‎ Dr. Rudolf Uher and his colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry in King’s College London used brain scanning technology, known as functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), to look at the brains of eighteen men and women.‎ The volunteers were given images of food to look at, as well as food to taste. Their brain reactions were observed by the scientists.‎ They found that the female brains reacted much more strongly than those of males.‎ The same reaction did not happen when they were shown non-food images. The team believe this means women think more about food than men tend to do.‎ Dr. Uher said, “This could be related to biological differences between men and women. But the more likely explanation is that women have a more complicated reaction to food because of social pressure.‎ Professor Carey Cooper, psychology and health professor at Lancaster University, said, “For centuries women have had a providing role — preparing and cooking food for their families. And it is part of that rule to make sure the food is safe. They will therefore be much more sensitive to food than ‎ men are, and I would not be surprised if that was now built into their DNA. If the female brain reacts to food because it historically has developed neural (神经的) pathways to do this, then food will be the way they express their stress. Food actually, is a comfort for women.”‎ But other experts have said that more research must be done before the results can be proved. American scientist Angelo del Parigi of the John B. Pierce Laboratory in New Haven, Connecticut, said, “Looking at an FMRI alone cannot make sure whether the stronger reaction in women is due to innate (天生的) differences or a learned process.”‎ ‎12. Dr.Uher and his colleagues carried out the research by comparing ____‎ A. FMRI’s effectiveness on women and men B. volunteers’ reaction to different kinds of food C. volunteers’ reaction to food before and after meals D. women’s and men’s reaction to different images ‎13. In Dr. Uher’s opinion, women react more strongly to food than men most probably because they are ____ .‎ A. told to do so for a long time B. influenced by advertisements C. forced by powerful social influences D. born to do so due to biological reasons ‎14. According to Professor Carey Cooper, women _______.‎ A. turn to food when they feel sad[]‎ B. are stressed because of food safety C. accept their social role from the heart D. are satisfied with preparing food for their families ‎15. What was Angelo del Parigi’s attitude towards the research results?‎ A. Surprised. B. Uninterested. C. Doubtful. D.
