Is your head permanently stuck in a book? 36 There are many benefits to reading. Getting into a good novel improves our literacy. But who and what encourages us to pick up a book and start reading? Of course, when we are young, our parents and teachers inspire us by introducing us to characters that we love or hate. As a child, I loved books written by Roald Dahl, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Twits. 37 They are popular with children even today, despite competition from contemporary authors. One modern-day children’s author is J. K. Rowling, who’s known for her books about the wizard, Harry Potter. 38 The UK’s National Literacy Trust awarded her the title for “turning a generation of children into readers”. 39 It can also help people in difficult circumstances. The author Pat Winslow worked as a writer in prisons and found reading and discussing stories helped prisoners reflect on their patterns of behavior. She says, “very often we would have discussions about the moral compass of a character. What was the motivation of somebody? Why did they behave that way?” Today I like to read factual books such as biographies, where you get an insight into the lives of important and well-known people. I also enjoy looking at travel books and learning about journeys and new destinations. 40 A.If so, that’s a good thing for you. B.It’s a good substitute if you can’t visit in person. C.Good writing can really capture our imagination. D.Reading books is more than an enjoyable leisure time. E. These fictional stories were funny, twisted and slightly evil. F. It offers a great workout for the body - it builds endurance , muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. If you don' t mind getting wet, it can be fun too. 36_ Well, many people are fond of it, based on evidence that it can actually be good for us. Cold-water swimming 一 sometimes called wild swimming 一 involves swimming in natural areas including ponds, rivers and the sea. Jumping in gives a short sharp shock to the body,_37___ A cold dip might wake you up, but research has found it can have much bigger benefits than that for your body and mind. As well as being good exercise, spending time outdoors and by water improves well-being. 38 One man who suffered constant pain after surgery claimed he was cured by taking a plunge in cold open water. And another swimmer,Sandria Simons, told the BBC“the immersion 4 of your body in cold, salt water, just feeling like you' re at one with nature if you like, just feels amazing. But what is it that people are gaining from this chilly experience? Doctors say getting into cold water arouses a stress response, but the more you do it, your reaction to stress is reduced. It' s also thought to have a strong anti-inflammatory effect. But there are bigger benefits to this stress -reducing exercise. Some experts believe cold-water swimming helps ‘cross -adaptation',where one form of stress prepares the body for another. 39 So, if you' re convinced that this is for you, take advice: approach it with caution, swim with a friend, and maybe start in the summer , 40 A. but many participants say they get used to it. It seems that everyone goes to college now, whether or not they find themselves interested in studying something long term. Even though I know there are different ways to be intelligent, I struggle due to society’s influence, which maintains that intelligence is quantifiable ( 可 量 化 的 ) and that academic intelligence is one and the only. Where do IQ tests come into play when one considers intelligence? Do they fall closest to priority when considering this unquantifiable concept? Intelligence simply cannot be reduced to an IQ test, which are not effective. While designed to measure “intelligence,” all they measure are biological developments that can change as one grows. 36 There are many factors that can indicate an intelligent being, such as academic intelligence, emotional intelligence, and worldly intelligence. For instance, if a student realizes that they haven’t studied appropriately for an exam, he or she would have the ability to acknowledge that, and then make revisions to his or her study habits accordingly. 37 Emotional intelligence is the intelligence that fosters self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-improvement. 38 We cannot function without forming relationships and communication. This proves that being aware of oneself and reflecting in order to further better communication skills is an evidence to intelligence. Where would you be if you were a terrible communicator, unaware, and unwilling to improve, but academically thriving? Emotional intelligence is what surpasses ( 超 越 ) those who are hard-headed. Those who maintain academic intelligence may still be a bit dull and unaware of themselves. 39 Even as a college student, there are certain skills such as teamwork and communication that require awareness and an open mind in order to further their growth. 40 Academia is not only pictured and taught unfairly, or even close to what intelligence is if you were to quantify it. If you want to strive for mental growth, and maintain self-awareness through self-reflection, you can apply that to any intelligence category. A. All of life is communicatory. B. Specifically, this is emotional intelligence. C. Intelligence is determined by many factors. D. Stubbornness is a barrier towards communication. E. In fact, there are many with low IQ scores that are intelligent. F. Some connections exist between intelligence and communication. G. So there is academic intelligence, emotional intelligence, and worldly intelligence. 36-40 EBADG 四川省成都新津为明学校 2020-2021 学年高二下学期 3 月入学考试英语试题 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Most people are always trying to get more and more, but never really enjoy life. 36 And we can do some simple things to appreciate the great life we already lead.
