The ancient Greeks were highly
competitive and believed strongly
in the concept of competition. The
final Greek goal was to be the best.
All aspects of life, especially
athletics, were centred round this
concept. It was therefore
considered one of the greatest
honours to win a victory at
Olympia. An olive wreath as the
only prize given at Olympia
suggested that the athletes
competed for honour, not for

Games. But the symbolic power of the

Olympic flag: Introduced in 1908, the

Babylon, but now represent the union of
the continents—the Americas, Africa,
Asia, Oceania and Europe and the
meeting of athletes throughout the world

Olympic Motto: “Swifter, higher, stronger” is the
Olympic Motto. The motto encourages athletes to give
their best during competitions and to strive beyond
themselves. Following the three words, a more well-
known expression was developed by Pierre de Coubertin,
founder of the modern Olympics: “The most important
thing is not to win but to take part!”
The well-known motto of the Olympic games,
"Citius, Altius, Fortius," is Latin for "Faster, Higher,
Braver." However, this phrase is most universally
recognized in English as "Swifter, Higher, Stronger.“
The motto that we know today was not part of the
ancient Games. Henri Martin Dinon, a Dominican
father, pronounced these words for the first time on
March 7, 1891 while delivering an athletic prize at
Albert College, where he was a priest.
Coubertin felt it could be used to describe the
goals of great athletes all over the World.
Background information of the motto
Olympic oath: Introduced in 1920, it
says: “In the name of all competitors,
I promise that we shall take part in
these Olympic Games, respecting and
abiding by the rules that govern them,
in the true spirit of sportsmanship,
for the glory of sport and the honour
of our teams.”
What is the Chinese

Olympic oath?

Torch and torch relay: The torch was first
introduced in the 1932 Los Angeles Games. It was lit
from the sun’s rays at Olympia, Greece, and stayed lit
until the games were completed. The torch relay was
first organized at the 1936 Berlin Games. The original
torch is lit at Olympia, Greece, and then carried to the
host city. The last runner carries the torch into the
Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony. The
flame is then lit from the torch and will remain lit until
it is put out during the closing ceremony. The torch
relay symbolizes the passing of Olympic traditions from
ancient games to modern games, from one generation
to another.
