They spent the morning in front of the house, talking and drinking tea. Sharon felt strong and tried her best to cook, starting a pot of homemade soup — a task that would have been nothing a few years ‎ ago, but is a little hard for her now. Her illness had left her weak, often puzzled. ‎ ‎ Sharon was the take-charge person in the family. She was seldom sick until 1997, when she began suffering from terrible headaches. One day at work, colleagues said she didn’t look right and urged(敦促) her to go to the hospital. She rose from her chair and fell over. She could hear voices, but couldn’t speak. It looked as if she’d had a stroke(中风). ‎ ‎ Other stroke-like symptoms (症状) followed. She had difficulty walking. She ran a fever all the time. The headaches never stopped. She and Kevin spent all their savings seeing doctors and on medical tests. ‎ ‎ In 2000, physicians said Sharon had brain damage that left her with symptoms resembling dementia (痴呆症). Once, she visited a familiar store and couldn’t remember where the exit was. Another time, she was making spaghetti, but didn’t know what to do after the water boiled.‎ ‎ After seeing specialists, Kevin and Sharon came to believe that exposure(接触) to mould(霉菌) had caused Sharon’s condition. After reading the passage, we can infer that Sharon was a(n) ______ woman before she became ill.‎ A. independent B. clever C. kind D. forgetful B Publishers of books for beginning readers are in the business of doing whatever they can to make children develop a love of reading. At times, that means they'll produce books that are more colorful and more packed with pictures. But it turns out that when it comes to learning to read books, more pictures aren't always better.‎ In fact, simply having more than one picture on a page can negatively(消极地) affect the ability of preschoolers to learn words from that page, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Sussex. “Storybook reading is a great activity to help children increase their vocabularies,” writes co-author Zoe M. Flack in the University's School‎ of ‎Psychology blog.‎ But the illustrations(插图) can affect how well children will learn new words. “For example,” Flack writes, “We know that children learn words better if illustrations are realistic.” Also, studies have shown that adding bells and whistles(哨声) to storybooks may negatively affect learning, according to Jessica S. Horst, Flack's co-author for the study. “We also know that children look within illustrations for the things they hear in the story, so if the story mentions a girl dropping an ice cream, children will look at the ice cream in the illustration.”‎ With that in mind, Dr. Horst and Ms. Flack began to wonder what would happen when picture books show many illustrations on a page and how young children who haven't yet learned to read know which illustration to look at while listening to a story. To find out, they read storybooks that displayed either one or two illustrations per page to 36 three-year-old children. As it turns out, children who listened to stories with only one illustration at a time learned twice as many words as children who listened with two or more illustrations.‎ ‎25. Why do publishers produce books with many colorful pictures?‎ A. Because such books help kids improve their imagination.‎ B. Because parents are more interested in such books.‎ C. Because they want to help kids love reading.‎ D. Because such books are easier to produce.‎ ‎26. What does Zoe M. Flack say about storybook reading?‎ A. It helps kids learn new words.‎ A. Illustrations aren't that necessary.‎ B. More words should be added to a story.‎ C. It helps kids improve their reading ability.‎ ‎27. What did the researchers find through their research?‎ A. Reading‎ is a very important activity.‎ B. One page should have only one illustration for kids.‎ C. Children know what books they should read.‎ D. Children don't really love looking at illustrations.‎ ‎28. According to the passage, the findings can help publishers____________.‎ A. choose better stories for children B. produce more types of storybooks C. Produce better books for little kids D. Make more money through producing books C Getting paid to stay in bed all day sounds pretty good. But what if someone offered you $23,000 to stay in bed for two months? That's the deal that are search team is offering to 24 volunteers. ‎ Researchers are looking for volunteers to help them study the influences of weightlessness on the human body by spending 60 days lying down. Lying in bed isn't exactly the same as being weightless, but the influences on the human body are similar.‎ ‎ When astronauts spend a long time in an environment with no gravity(重力), like the International Space Station (ISS),their bodies are affected in many ways. After a couple of months on the ISS, astronauts' hearts don't beat as hard. Their muscles(肌肉)become weaker because they no longer have to work against gravity. Their bones may break more easily. There may also be changes in the astronauts' sleep habits.‎ ‎ Dr. Arnaud Beck, the researcher in charge of the study, said his goal is to measure the influences of weightlessness, and also to find ways to prevent problems. The study will take 88 days altogether. During the first two weeks the volunteers will be tested to establish(确定) their levels of fitness. Then they will spend 60 days lying in ‎ bed with their heads slightly lower than their bodies. They will have to do everything while lying down, including brushing their teeth and going to the bathroom. Dr. Beck said the rule is that they must have at least one shoulder touching the bed at all times. Half of the volunteers in the study will be taking capsules(胶囊) containing special food supplements(增补物)several times a day to see if they help reduce the health problems caused by weightlessness. The last two weeks of the study will be spent trying to let the volunteers recover. Volunteers must be men between the ages of 20 and 45 who are in perfect health. They must be non-smokers.‎ ‎ The study will take place from September 1st to November. The first two days are the time for volunteers to sign in.‎ ‎29. The volunteers are asked to lie in bed in the study mainly because ____.‎ A. It has the same influence as being weightless B. It helps to know how to make astronauts sleep well C. It has some similarities to being weightless D. It can help volunteers feel the gravity better ‎30. What's one of the requirements for half of the volunteers in the study?‎ A. Helping test some food supplements' effect B. Lying down for 60 days in zero gravity C. Finishing most daily tasks when lying in bed D. Sleeping on their back most of the time ‎31. They'll lie on the bed all the time for the whole October.‎ 第二节 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ This Way to Dreamland Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this ‎ makes them forget what they should be doing.
