姓名曲晓男学号201006010116班级2010级英语(师范类)1班TheEternalCharmofHamlet---Fromthesoliloquy“Tobe,ornottobe...”AstheprinceofDenmark,Hamletwasthinkingofthetwochoices---toliveoninthisworldortodie;tosufferortotakeaction.Itseemsthatdeathisabetterchoicebecauseitcanputanendtoallsorrowsandmisfortunes.Butonhissecondthought,hewaswonderingaboutwhatwouldhappenafterdeath,becauseinhiseyes,deathisamysteriouskingdom,whichmightbemoreterriblethanthisworld.Therefore,Hamletwasnotonlytiredoflife,buthewasalsofulloffearoftheunknownfuturelife.Hishesitationshowsthecommonfeelingsofhumanbeingswhoweresufferinginthisworld.Whatimportantisthatthesoliloquy“Tobe,ornottobe...”isalsoastrongaccusationagainstthedarknessoftherealityofthesocial.Hamlet,fullofangerandresentment,pointedouttheevilsandcorruptioninthecountry.Theworldwasfullof“slingsandsorrows”,lifewasnothingbut“aseaoftroubles”:peoplewereboundtosufferfrom“thousandnaturalshocks”,sotheyweregroaningandtoiling.Whatismoreimpressiveisthelongquestioninthemiddle.Inmyviews,thePrinceofDenmark,Hamlet,isacontradictionbetweenidealsandrealitiesinthehumanist.Oncehewasfullofbrighthopeforpeople,societyandallthings.Buttheuglyandharshrealitybrokehisbeautifulideal,andhishumanistbeliefsshattered.Asahumanist,Hamlethesitatedontheroadofrevenge,whichshowedthatherepresentedthepoorbetweenthefeudalforcesandhumanism,andsoastoshowauthor’sreflectionsofRenaissancemovementandconcernstothefateofhumanandfuturesociety.However,Hamletwashesitatingandprocrastinatinginhispersonality.Hismelancholyisthereasonwhyhisimagehasamonumentalartisticcharm.WhenwetalkaboutthecharacterofHamlet,delayseemstobesynonymousofhisname.Frommypointofview,therearealsotwopointsofthereason.Ontheonehand,fightingagainstthestrongerenemyisthemainreasonwhyhewasunabletoact.HisunclewantedtogetridofHamlet,forconsolidatinghispoliticalpower.HealsoplantedthespiesaroundHamlettodetecthiswordsandactions.Inthiscase,Hamlet3 hadtopostponehisrevengeplanandhishesitationwasshowed.Ontheotherhand,Hamletknewthedifficulttaskofhisrevenge.Henotonlywantedtorevengeforhisfather,butalsowantedtoreversethetide.Facedwiththesedualtasks,hewantedtotakeactionbutdidnotknowhowtoact.Intheplay,theheartofthecontradictionhaddriventhecharacterofHamlettoperformthedelayandhesitationvividly。InHamlet,weseethebrightandhappylifeoftheyoungprincedarkenedbythelustandingratitudeofhismotherandbytherevelationofhisuncle’sfoulmurderofhisfather.Hewasdisgustedwithhisuncle’sdrunkennessandshockedbyhismother’sshallowness.Inhiscontactwiththepeoplearoundhim,hecaredfornothingbuthumanworthandshowedthecontemptforrankandwealth.WhatHamletthoughtdidnotcompletelyhappen.Throughtheinfidelityofhismother,theservilityofthecourtiers,thefalsehoodofhisschool-fellows,and,finally,thecrimeofhisuncle,hediscoveredhowwickedandunjusttheworldhelivesinis.SowecanimaginethatwhyHamletwassodepressedanddelay.However,nomatterwhatstageoflifeyouarein,onceyouexperiencedarichanddeepspirituallife,enhanceyourownpersonality,re-discoveredanewself,youcanalwaysfind,inHamlet,somethingthatyoufeelitappeartobeeternalandimmortal.Becauseittalkedaboutthechoicesinlife,andtalkedaboutthatlivinginaspecifichistoricalperiodandenvironmentisuniquetooneselfbutcommonforallhuman-beings,aboutthechoiceaccordingonlytothelimitedexperienceaccumulatedinthepast.Inasense,hisexperienceisalsoourownexperience.Thefatehefacedisalsowhichwehavetofaceinacertainstageinourlife.Wehavetofacethedesperation,explorethetruthincontradictionandthefog,takeactioninadilemmawhere,andrebuildthebuildingofspiritandthesystemofvalueinaworldwhichhaslostthestandardsandscaletomeasure.Hamletisimperfect,andsometimeshischoiceisnotrationalandimpulsive,asamatteroffact,hecansuccumbtohisfateandhadnoneedtoprobethetruthofhisfather’sdeath.HoweverHamlet'scharactersdonotallowhimtolivewithanyquestionsandbepowerless,sohedecidedtofindthetruth,buthisexperienceledhimtomakefatalchoicewhichhethoughtcorrecttimeandtimeagain.FinallyHamletdoesnotregretforhischoice,hejustwantsHoratio"inthisharshworlddrawthybreathinpain,totellmystory."becauseeverychoiceofeveryindividualcannotberepeatedinaparticularhistorical,soitwouldbemeaninglesstoassumethatifHamletcangobackandremakeachoice,it’ssameof3 us,too,orwecansaythatthereisaHamletintheheartsofeveryperson,everychoicewemakeisuniqueandirreplaceable,itwilldirectlyaffectourfuturedestiny,thereisnostandardtomeasurewhetherourchoiceiscorrect,weareboundtoacceptalltheconsequencesofourchoice,justasHamletsaid"Thingsstandingthusunknown,shalllivebehindme!"Perhapstheproblemwehavetofaceisnotsoseriouslike"tobe,ornottobe",however,ifonewantstodowellbutnotdotherightinthisriskyworld,itisdifficulttomakeeachdecision.Inworldthatthereisnoyardsticktomeasuregoodnessandevilexcepttarget,havingthecouragetomakeachoiceandfranklyacceptingone’sownfate,whatIdoappreciatetheeternalcharmofHamlet.3
