Here’re some stories about the development of Lego, a successful toy company. The stories
started in the village of Billund, Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen liked making all kinds of things
with wood when he was a child. He had a workshop and in 1932 he started making toys and some
other things with wood. His products were very good and soon he got big orders.
In 1934, toys became the main business of his workshop. Ole wanted a new name for his

To the average American, pumpkin pie is a tasty and wonderful dish. You couldn’t have
Thanksgiving without it. For me, however, the smell of pumpkin pie baking in the oven brings
other special feelings.
My father was in the army, so I moved house often as a child. I had no hometown. Before I
could go to school or make friends in one town, I’d be settling (落脚) in another. There were so
few things around me to give a feeling of home. When you’re young, you don’t know the
difference — you think moving is normal. It’s only later when you learn that most people have a

Mexico City has long been famous for its air pollution. In 1992, the UN named it “the most
polluted city on the planet”. Six years later, it earned another name of “the most dangerous city in

Many things have caused the serious air pollution in Mexico City. The development of
industries, the increase in population, and the growth of vehicles are the main reasons.
Mexico has been working hard to improve the condition since the 1990s. For example, the
government has provided buses and other forms of public transportation. It has also started
“No-Drive Days”. This means people can’t drive their cars at least once a week.
Although Mexico has taken strict pollution control, the air pollution is still serious. And it got
so bad in May, 2019 that the government had to call an emergency (紧急情况). It has been a very
dry season this year. And there have been over 100 fires around Mexico City since January 1st.
Near the fires, the air is filled with smoke. And the high temperature and heavy air over the city
have kept the pollution where it is. The winds have not been strong enough to blow it away.
On May 14th, Mexico City had to close schools. So were playgrounds, several colleges and
at least one zoo. Some outdoor events like soccer games had to be moved to a different place or a
