A Maaseik, a city in Belgium, has opened an exhibition of about 200 relics and treasures of the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD), showing China’s golden age of ancient civilisation(文明). The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and will continue until Oct. 20, is part of the city’s effort to create a centre of Chinese culture. Belgian Princess Mathilde formally announced the beginning of the exhibition, titled “China’s Golden Age: Treasures from the Tang Dynasty”. The items, including gold plates and silver wares for royal families, Tang Dynasty tri-colour glazed figurines(小雕像) of women and paintings, have recently been on exhibit in the Dutch city of Assert. All of the exhibited items are from Shaanxi Province, China. Its provincial capital Xi’an was the most populous(人口多的) city in the world and once the capital of the Tang Dynasty. The Tang period is generally regarded as a high point in Chinese civilization—equal to, or better than that of the earlier Han Dynasty (202 BC—220 AD), a golden age of Chinese culture. Several years ago, said Dirk Verlaak, vice-mayor of Maaseik, his city and Assen teamed up to host history and culture exhibitions of China’s first two imperial dynasties, the Qin (221 BC—206 BC) and the Han. The Chinese relics and treasures attracted 350,000 visitors in Assen and 190,000 in Maaseik. “Westerners don’t know much about China’s ancient civilisation and history, and we hope the new exhibition in Maaseik can attract more visitors,” said Verlaak. 1. Chinese Civilisation Attracts Foreigners B When I was a little girl, I remember that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family. I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days. Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams. After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day. 4. On September 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye-catching feature—Face ID. 4 / 20 With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it. It is powered by a so-called TrueDepth camera system built into the front of the iPhone X. When the camera system sees a person’s face, it uses 30,000 unseen dots to “map” the shape and outline of the face. A mathematical model of the face will then be created and stored in the phone. The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks. This happens in less than a second. Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works. Although the technology sounds fancy, there are still concerns. For example, will Face ID work for twins? According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating(出错率) rises. So one would need to set a password then. Apple also emphasizes that Face ID only unlocks when you stare at it. It is what Apple calls “attention aware”. So the phone won’t unlock if you are just glancing at the phone for the time. It won’t work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo. 8. Face ID helps iPhone X users to ________. A. get their phones more eye-catching B. make the phone camera powerful C. unlock their cell phones quickly D. create and store their face model easily 9. How does the camera system of Face ID work? A. It compares the face model with the user’s face later. B. It remembers the users’ faces by taking their pictures. 5 / 20 C. It uses a map to store face models of its users for use. D. It matches the users’ faces with dots in the system. 10. What is the best title of the text? A. The introduction of the iPhone X B. The features of the iPhone X C. The iPhone X recognizes a face D. Unlock the iPhone X by a stare. Almost every college and university in the US now offers some forms of Internet-based application. 11 Some people believe that the best way to get a detailed look at what life is like at any college or university is by visiting the campus. 12 Most students begin visiting colleges and universities that they are interested in before their final year of high school. The majority of colleges and universities let interested students visit their campuses at any time of a year. Students can contact the admission offices of the schools that interest them. 13 Their job is to provide information, offer advice and show future students different parts of the campus, such as housing and classrooms. During the visit, students should also try to plan a meeting with an admissions official. Most schools keep a record of all the exchanges they have with candidates. It’s never too early to visit a school. This could be years before they even start thinking about the application process. Simply witnessing the college experience in real life can be helpful for young people. 14 However, visiting schools may not be a choice appropriate to everyone, especially international students, so for students who are unable to visit, there is one additional resource: social media. 15 Schools will permit students to post videos and pictures that show what their daily lives are like at college. These can provide applicants with a view that is almost as good as being there in person. 6 / 20 A. Current students usually lead the tours. B. At present, school visits are becoming popular in the US. C. This means anyone can enter the campus whenever they want. D. Many schools use Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to advertise themselves. E. That is why some applicants even bring younger brothers and sisters with them on visits. F. There is more to visiting a college or university than taking a tour or meeting administrators. G. However, students may miss a lot when they only use Internet information to make their college decisions. We have all heard how time is more valuable than money, but is it 16 to have too much? Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him. Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night The funeral( 葬 礼 ) is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel(新闻短片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said. “Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said. “He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said. 10 / 20 Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night before he had to return home. Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories: every picture, every piece of furniture. Jack stopped suddenly. “What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said. “What box?” Mom asked. “There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. “Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly. Paragraph 1: Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk.____________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 高中英语 必修第一册 11 / 20 _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Inside he found these words carved:______________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 高中英语 必修第一册 12 / 20 Unit 1 A new start 单元测试 答案解析 第一部分 第一节 A 【语篇解读】比利时城市马赛克于 5 月 11 日至 10 月 20 日举办中国文化展览,共展出大约 200 件中国唐代的文物。 根据第一段中的“showing China’s golden age of ancient civilisation” 和第二段中的“to create a centre of Chinese culture.” 根据文章结尾迪尔克·沃尔拉克的讲话“…we hope the new exhibition in Maaseik can attract more visitors”可知,他对本次展览是有信心的 3.【答案】A 【解析】主旨大意题。 根据第一段中的 so we would have time for a conversation with each other 可知,作者小时候经常与父亲谈话,故选 B 项。 I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. Four years ago, my dad visited me… He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. 根据第四段中的 on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad 可知,作者在去医院的路上开始想所有错过的与父亲谈话 的机会,故选 C 项。 根据第三段第一句“With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it.” 根据第五段第一句“The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model.” 根据最后一段中的“Apple also emphasizes that Face ID only unlocks when you stare at it.
