Since I came to my new neighbourhood, I have had the pleasure of meeting a few neighbours. They seem to be quite 1 people. For Christmas, I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbours that I know. I sat down and 2 . There were nine neighbours, and I also knew which houses they lived in. However, I decided to 3 one more person to my list, the lady I met every morning walking to work as I drove down the street. She always managed a sweet smile and a hearty wave(挥手), 4 I had no idea which house she lived in. My gift idea was to make small 5 baskets and leave them on each of my neighbour’s front porches(门廊) the night of Christmas Eve. I kept the last one for the friendly lady, since I was still not exactly sure where she lived— 6 the house down about where I met her each morning. Finally I decided to put it there. My neighbours really enjoyed the baskets and a couple even came by to 7 me. This morning on my way to work, I placed my mail in the mailbox and noticed a Thank You card. I opened it and read the 8 which really caught me by surprise. The card said, “Thank you for those lovely apples and strawberries you left on the porch of Tod. I don’t understand any of it,” she cries out. After shouting and shutting her door, she calms down enough to go through her notes. The following day I ask her how the test went and she just says “OK, I got a nine”. “Wow. Well done!” I say, before she finishes with “But I never get a ten!” According to James, this obsession with getting top marks has been a bad development, which encourages people to think of education in terms of work and money. To test this, I asked my daughter why she was so worried about her tests. She looked at me as if I was sick. “Well, if I don’t get good grades, I won’t be able to afford nice things like a car and a house.” I was quite surprised, because I don’t consider myself a pushy(有进取心) parent. But James suggests and it leaves students feeling failures(失败) even if they are very bright. He points to the Danish system(体制) of education as a better model. Creating happy citizens who have good social skills is seen as more important than high achievements at school or the needs of business. For me, I cannot remember the last time I had to work out the area of a circle, recite a Shakespeare poem or grammar rules, yet I have lived a happy life. What I really needed to learn at school was how to make polite conversations, or how to avoid getting into debt(负债) or how to develop good personality. This is in fact similar to what Oliver James really has in mind. And he is looking for schools where students are encouraged to find and follow their own interests, something more like Tongjon. Tongjon has been developed in some Korean private schools. It is quite different from the more rigid(严格的) system of learning things by heart that is used in Korea, and indeed in many other school systems around the world. As the Russian poet Pushkin said, “Inspiration(灵感) is needed in geometry(几何学) just as much as in poetry”, and inspiration does not come from endlessly revising for tests or getting worried about them. ( ) 1. What does the writer probably think of her daughter? A. She sets herself a goal too high to reach. B. She should be more polite to her parents. C. She is hard-working but not very bright. D. She takes her grades much too seriously. ( ) 2. What does the word “obsession” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. A pleasant and interesting fact. B. A satisfied and proud state. C. A practical and widely-used way. D. A fixed and often unreasonable idea. ( ) 3. What can we infer from the passage? A. Social skills are as important as high grades. B. Too much interest in grades may shake self-confidence. C. The writer regrets not having studied hard at school. D. Danish educational system is for very smart students. ( ) 4. The writer wants to tell us that ______. A. learning happily is the key to self-development. B. top marks may be helpful to increase one’s interest. C. tests should be improved to give children inspiration. D. education should meet one’s needs for work and money. C Some researchers explain how most people form their social groups with people of their age. Especially, as children and teenagers, even adults, people make their friends based on proximity (邻近) more than anything else. Even in a college classroom, the students may not make friends with those who have similar personalities and interests. It's the people they really sit next to. Clearly, who stands to you has the greatest influence on you. As Jim Rohn has widely said. "You are average (平均) of five people you spend the most little with." Over the past ten months, I've paid Ryan, it Famous writer of several bestselling books, to help with the book I'm writing. Working with him has shown me just how low my standards for my work are. For example, every time I send him a drab (草稿), he shows me how it could be 10 times better, and he holds me to that standard. ___▲ It's because that I don't know what I don't know. Working with Ryan has made me realize what is possible and what it takes to create something powerful. Like Ryan, my business partner Richard has wonderful ideas and far different experience than I have. He has written 36 New York Times Bestsellers. He's been speaking and doing events for 20 years. Richard always performs at high levels, and he is also very strict with me because my performance is a reflection (反映) on him. It's not a bad thing because it creates high pressure (压力) to help me make great progress in organizing author training. In a word, you need to stay with those people who can help you realize your level and potential. Staying with people who have higher standards is the fastest way for you to change. If you don't change your environment, your progress will be very slow. Who you stay with has huge importance. You can't ignore this. ( ) 1. Why did the writer quote (引用) Jim Rohn's words in Paragraph 1? A. To support the writer's opinion. B. To introduce the writer's best friend. C. To show Jim Rohn's working ability. D. To prove Jim Rohn is a great person. ( ) 2. Which of the following can be put at the beginning of Paragraph 3? A. It's not that my workmates' abilities are low. B. It's not that my working ability was born low. C. It's not that' e friends based on proximity. D. It's not that I’ve paid Ryan to help me with my book. ( ) 3. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to (指代)? A. The writer's performance. B. Jim Rohn's famous saying. C. Richard’s different experience. D. Richard’s strictness with the writer. ( ) 4. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ___________. A. we can improve our working abilities by ourselves B. we must pay attention to our talent and potential C. we’d better make friends with those who can hold us to higher levels D. we should stay with those who have similar personalities and interests D Some people love going to museums, while others really hate it and would rather stay at home, enjoying their favourite TV shows. So museums are being seen as outdated (过时) and boring by today’s young people. I have just returned to the UK after travelling around the USA. While I was there, I visited lots of museums. I must say, museums are educational, either to develop knowledge learned at school, or to improve knowledge of other cultures. In Chicago, we visited the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago. It was full of paintings, drawings and sculptures by a large number of artists, such as Picasso, Monet, Matisse and Dali. There was a mixture of traditional and modern art. When we were in Washington D.C., we visited a few of the Smithsonian museums. These are all free to visitors, which is great if you just want to see a few things, and not spend all day inside. The Air and Space Museum was especially good: it had lots of planes on show, interesting information and also some interactive (互动) parts. We also went to the National U. S. Holocaust (纳粹大屠杀) Memorial Museum. Naturally, it was sad to read about the horrors which influenced so many people in World War II. However, it was also interesting to read the stories of those who survived the Holocaust, as well as those who helped others. Last but not least, I also found the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to be of great interest. This museum is for those who lost their lives, as well as their families, when the Twin Towers in New York City were attacked by terrorists (恐怖分子) in 2001. It tells you how the terrorists planned the attack and what happened as a result of their actions. Surviving pieces of the towers are shown in the museum. It was a truly meaningful visit, which made me value my own life that little bit more. I think museums play an important role in realizing historical importance for future people. Whatever your interests, there may be a museum for you. You can visit waxwork (蜡像) museums to see models of famous people (and get photos with the Queen!), science museums for an interactive visit and a little bit more! Best of all, if you’re ever in the UK, many of them are free! ( ) 1. What does the first paragraph tell us? A. People of all ages love going to museums. B. Trips to museums are always very tiring. C. Most museums in the USA are outdated. D. Some young people find museums boring. ( ) 2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. There are a lot of interactive parts in waxwork museums. B. Art Institute of Chicago has a mixture of traditional and modern art. C. You’d better read the stories before visiting the holocaust Memorial Museum. D. The Air and Space Museum shows the twin towers were attacked by terrorists. ( ) 3. What can we learn from the passage? A. Future people have the duty to protect museums. B. Visiting 9/11 Memorial and Museum is educational. C. Most museums around the world are free for students. D. Taking photos is allowed in the Smithsonian museums. ( ) 4. What is the writer’s opinion towards museums? A. She suggests going to museums. B. She warns the problems of museums. C. Museums have advantages and downsides. D. Museums should be open to all kinds of people 三、词汇综合运用 请认真阅读下面短文,并根据各题所给首字母的提示,写出一个合适的英语单词完整、正确的形式,使短文通 顺。 The Clever Learning Methods Why do you 'need study skills?
