B2U2 Passage 1
Task 1:Test
Every Christmas, Tolkien’s children would get an envelope, inside ________
there was a handwritten letter from Father Christmas. These letters from Father
Christmas were indeed written by Tolkien, one of the most famous ________ (name)
in English literature. In this way, Tolkien ________ (keep) Father Christmas alive for
his four children.
The letters told wonderful stories about Father Christmas’s life and adventures at
the North Pole with ________ regular character, Polar Bear. In a letter, Father
Christmas ____________ (complain) about his helpers who played games with the
toys instead of ________ (wrap) them up. ________________ (interesting), Tolkien
didn’t warn his children that they might not receive presents ________ they were not
good. The letters did, however, change as his children got ________ (old). From these
letters, we can share the true spirit of giving at Christmas time. Tolkien’s love and
care ________ his children made him very like Father Christmas.
Task2 :Gap filling
The Real Father Christmas
Many people still remember the magic ( 魔 力 ) of Father Christmas from when they were
children. As parents, they try to keep that magic alive (live) for their children for as long as they
can.
That is why Letters from Father Christmas could be the perfect book for those who regard
Christmas as a special time of year(把圣诞节看作是每年的特别时光). The man who wrote
these letters is one of the most famous names in English literature (文学)—J.R.R. Tolkien, author
of The Lord of the Rings(《指环王(魔戒)》). The letters were Tolkien’s way of keeping (keep)
Father Christmas alive for his four children, over a period of more than twenty years.
Every Christmas, an envelope (信封) with a North Pole stamp arrived. It was addressed to (寄
给) Tolkien’s children. Who could it be from? The children must have been very excited as they
opened it. Inside, they would find a handwritten letter ( 亲 笔 信 ) from Father Christmas. The
letters were also beautifully illustrated (配有精美的插图)—each must have taken its true author,
Tolkien, a long time to complete (complete).
The letters told wonderful stories about Father Christmas’s life and adventures (冒险) at the
North Pole. A regular character ( 经 常 出 现 的 任 务 ) in the letters was Polar Bear, who once
climbed the North Pole (an actual pole in this case) and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s
house. In another letter, Father Christmas complained about (抱怨) how he could not stop his
helpers playing (play) games with the toys instead of wrapping them up( 把 他 们 包 装 起 来 ).
Interestingly (interest), the letters did not contain (包括) the usual warnings (警告) to children
that they might not receive their presents if they were not good. The letters did, however, change
as Tolkien’s children got older: ... but if you find that not many of the things you asked for (你要
的东西) have come, and not perhaps quite as many as sometimes, remember that this Christmas
all over the world there are a terrible number of poor and starving people(饥饿的人们).
Letters from Father Christmas tells us that as well as (除了) enjoying the adventures of Father
Christmas, Polar Bear and other characters at the North Pole, we can all share the true spirit of
giving (真正的奉献精神) at Christmas time. By expressing (express) love for his children in such a
special way, Tolkien may indeed (的确) have been the real Father Christmas.
B2U2 Passage 2
Task 1: Test
We ____________ (eat) out for the Spring Festival family dinner for the last three years, and
we have enjoyed it no ________ (little) than eating at home. I don’t understand why some
people refuse ___________ (embrace) the change.
Can’t they admit that the ____________ (prepare) for the dinner are hard work? I really
don’t think it’s worth the effort of spending so much time preparing for a single meal, and then
another hour ____________ (clean) up the mess after it’s over. We work all year, so why can’t
one day be about spending time with family and relaxing?
Eating out is a good choice and it has nothing to do ________ loss of traditions. We still have
the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion is more enjoyable
without all that ________ (tired) cooking, and the dishes taste better!
In my opinion, what or where we eat on Spring Festival Eve ________ (real) doesn’t matter.
Eating out may change the form of this tradition, ________the love between the family members
sitting around the table together remains the same.
Task 2: Gap filling
Time for a Change?
Social Insights (社会见解)
A family dinner ( 家 宴 / 年 夜 饭 ) is an important tradition to celebrate (celebrate) Spring
Festival. Nowadays, some people choose to have the dinner in a restaurant, but not everyone is
keen on this idea(不是每个人都支持这个想法). What do our readers think?
Dear Editor(编辑),
We have eaten out (eat out) for the Spring Festival family dinner for the last three years, and
we have enjoyed it no less than eating at home. I don’t understand why some people refuse to
embrace the change(接受改变).
Can’t they admit that the preparations (prepare) for the dinner are hard work? I really don’t
think it’s worth the effort (精力) of spending so much time preparing for a single meal, and then
another hour cleaning up the mess (收拾残局;收拾干净) after it’s over. We work all year, so why
can’t one day be about spending time with family and relaxing (relax)?
Eating (eat) out is a good choice and it has nothing to do with loss of traditions(和丢弃传统
无关). We still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion (场合)
is more enjoyable (enjoy) without all that tiring (tire) cooking, and the dishes taste better!
In my opinion, what or where we eat on Spring Festival Eve really doesn’t matter. Eating out
may change the form of this tradition( 这 种 传 统 的 形 式 ), but the love between the family
members sitting around the table together remains (仍然是) the same.
