I stood in front of a six story high, red brick building. It was to be my new home for the next several years. I was a bit scared, unsettled and thrilled at the same time. I had two suitcases and a bag with me. In them were packed all of my clothes, towels, sheets, alarm clock and everything else I thought I would need. I carried them upstairs and then threw them on my bed. I looked around the room wondering what life had in store for me. It was another afternoon in August. I was just short of turning forty two. My daughter was eighteen and we were standing in front of the same building. I smiled as I helped her carry her things up to her room but I also noticed that my wife and I were making more than one trip. All of the students not just my daughter seemed to have so much more stuff than I did all those years ago. Yet, it didn’t seem to make things any better for them. In fact, they looked more stressed than I remembered being on my first day there. At that moment, I wondered what life had in store for my daughter. Last night I had a dream that I have had many times before. I was back in that same room with my belongings piled on my bed searching for my course book and wondering what classes I would take. I often wondered what this dream meant but when I woke up this morning it became crystal clear to me. We are sometimes teachers in the life, but we are always students in it. We are here taking the most important class ever. We are here to learn to love ourselves. We are here to learn to love everyone as ourselves. And it takes a lifetime. The stuff we carry with us through this life doesn’t matter at all either. It is the stuff we carry inside of us when we leave this life that really counts. 24. What do the author and her daughter had in common? A. They were admitted into the same college. B. They brought equally heavy stuff to the dormitory. C. They had a shared accommodation with their friends. D. They both wondered what life would be like in the future. 25. What can we infer about the dream from the last paragraph? A. The author used to be a teacher. B. The dream implied something mysterious . C. The love of everyone really matters. D. The inside of us is more important. 26. Which of the following best describes the author as a father? A. Generous. B. Diligent. C. Caring. D. Demanding. 27. How does the author develop the passage? A. By making comparisons B. By analyzing causes. C. By describing processes. D. By presenting an argument. 21. The city has taken advantage of tiny sensors, big data and other technologies to become more responsive to its residents’ needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today’s cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life. Kris Carter, co-chair of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, rolled out Boston’s smart city program in 2014. It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city collected those reports and decided which place should be repaired. The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. Boston’s push to become a leading smart city now contains a core tenet: high-tech initiatives(方案) shouldn’t only benefit the already well-resourced. Under Carter, technology is seeping into the city’s functioning and daily life, but with a special eye to serving those populations and neighborhoods that need the most support. Instead of letting tech-savvy( 懂 技 术 的 ) residents and high-tech companies drive the process. Carter’s group run meetings in local libraries and other public spaces to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. “Some cities take the point of view that if you put out the right technology devices, people will figure out how to take advantage of them,” he explains. “We wanted to start with a grass-roots view of what challenges needed to be addressed.” Only in that context, he adds, does technology enter the picture. When it comes to sidewalks, Boston has introduced a second method of collecting repair tips. In addition to its smartphone app, it has hired people to get out and walk the city’s 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition. “Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” says Carter. “We’re really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem.” 28. What does the underlined phrase “rolled out” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Printed. B. Canceled. C. Started. D. Doubted. 29. How does the App help build a smart city? A. It works well for poor neighborhoods. B. It helps the blind to walk safely in the city. C. It solves the problem from low-tech community. D. It works on smart phones to report repair information. 30. What can we know from Carter’s words in Paragraph 5? A. Technology is used properly in different neighborhoods. B. The use of technology is still a dream of the residents in Boston. C. Carter wishes high-tech companies to use the technology first. D. Boston wants to be different from other cities towards using technology. 31. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Boston is becoming a crowded city. B. Boston focuses too much on repair tips. C. Boston is taking practical ways to get repair information. D. Boston is spending too much on checking the sidewalks. 根据文章首句“Boston wants to be smarter.”及画线短语所在句“Kris Carter, co-chair of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, rolled out Boston’s smart city program in 2014. It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair.” 根据第二段后两句“It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city collected those reports and decided which place should be repaired.” 及 第 三 段 的 “...where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest.” 根据第五段中 cart 的话“Some cities take the point of view that if you put out the right technology devices, people will figure out how to take advantage of them,”和“We wanted to start with a grass-roots view of what challenges needed to be addressed.” 根据本段前两句“When it comes to sidewalks, Boston has introduced a second method of collecting repair tips. In addition to its smartphone app, it has hired people to get out and walk the city’s 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.” D Believe it or not, nearly a fifth of older adults have contact with friends, family and neighbors less than once a week. In the United Kingdom, that amounts to nearly 9 million residents who are isolated with little social contact. In the United States, a 2019 survey on aging found 8% of older adults living alone who report feelings of loneliness. ●In Somerset, England, the local police found a way to fight social isolation. Local police chose a project that was local, where they could see the change they’d enabled. Their “chat benches” appeared in local parks, where they encourage strollers( 散 步者 ) to sit down and have a chat with a random stranger. “The sign simply helps to break down the invisible, social barriers that exists between strangers who find themselves sharing a common place. We can all play a part…” according to a spokesman for the police department. “Simply stopping to say ‘hello’ to someone at the chat bench could make a huge difference to the vulnerable(易受伤害的) people in our communities and help to make life a little better for them.” ●Some Texans in the United States, are trying to relieve the loneliness and isolation that many elderly Americans are feeling during the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒流行)by creating safe “hugging booths.” Amber Crenshaw and her husband Steve Crenshaw own a business called Handle With Care and work with Unlimited Care Cottages, an assisted living facility. Amber said she and her husband designed and built the hugging booths after one of the nurses suggested the idea. "The residents have been, just so filled with joy,” Amber said. “It was one of our resident’s birthdays. We were able to set the booth up for their birthday, and family members were able to come in and give birthday hugs. It has really lifted the spirits of the assisted living residents.” The Crenshaws have just worked with Unlimited Care so far, but they said other assisted living facilities in Texas have contacted them with interest. 32. What is the finding of the 2019 investigation? A. A majority of old people get in touch with others less than once a week. B. The number of isolated people who contact with others adds up to 9 million in the UK. C. 8% of the aged people who suffer from loneliness live on their own in America. D. There are more people who have little connection with others in the UK than in the USA. 33. Why did the local police in Somerset set up “chat benches” in local parks? A. To remind older adults of the tricks of the cheats. B. To better the public facilities in the community. C. To make local people feel closer to each other. D. To celebrate United Nations World Elder Day. 34. What can be inferred from the case of “hugging booths”? A. Hugging booths play a role in birthday hugs in family members B. The Crenshaws run a business and an assisted living facility C. Some nurses first came up with the idea of the “hugging booth”. D. There’re many assisted living facilities with hugging booths. 35.What’s the purpose of this text? A. To raise people’s awareness of caring lonely seniors. B. To help protect the people living in the community. C. To urge family members to hug each other more often. D. To present the differences between the two methods. 【文章大意】本文为说明文。文章讲述了在英国的萨默塞特和美国的德克萨斯这两个地方,人 们为减少老年人的孤独感而采取的措施。 32. Choose goals you can meet, but also ones that will require a bit of a push. Keep busy and note your progress. Feeling a sense of accomplishment can go a long way toward improving mood. Time goes by faster when you’re busy. 38 Check items off a list. Keep track of your successes. Staying busy and aware of all your progress could help rid your boredom. Talk to your boss about changing up your responsibilities. You might feel more excited about your job if your duties and responsibilities shifted. Think about how you might like to adjust things, and then consider talking with your boss about making a switch. 39 Be intentional and reflective about your experience at work. To fully appreciate an experience, you need to take time to process it. This can be difficult when work has become predictable and routine. 40 William Arruda, a famous writer, suggests a Friday afternoon ritual(仪式). “It’s an opportunity to reflect on the week and document three important aspects: Something I accomplished, something I’m grateful for, and something I learned,” Arruda wrote. A. Set some goals for your work. B. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new job. C. So you might have to get a little intentional about it. D. Have strong intentions to work hard to achieve your goals. E. So be aware of everything you’re getting done each day at work. F. Surely, a new position in the company or office will excite you a lot. G. Be deliberate about this and you’ll see each week as being a little different. 36—40 BAEFC 【语篇解读】本文属于指导类说明文。介绍了如何让我们的工作变得重新令人兴奋。 36.
