教学过程:
Step 1 Lead-in
Introduce the definition of direct speech and reported speech by comparing two
sentences.
She said, ‘I am working out in the gym now.’ (direct speech)
She said that she was working out in the gym then. (reported speech)
Step 2 How to change direct speech into reported speech
1. Explain the changes in personal pronouns and do some practice.
1). Mary said, 'I am playing the piano.'
Mary said that ______ was playing the piano.
2). Tom said, 'My father is a teacher.'
Tom said that ______ father was a teacher.
3). He said to Kate,'How is your sister now?
He asked Kate how ______ sister was then.
2. Explain the changes in tenses and do some practice.
1). Tom said, 'I haven’t bought a dictionary.'
Tom said that ____________ bought a dictionary.
2). Tom said, 'I will get married in July.'
Tom said that ____________ get married in July.
3). Tom said, 'I was born on April 20, 1980.'
Tom said that ____________ born on April 20, 1980.
4). Mary said, 'The earth goes around the sun.'
Mary said that the earth ____________ around the sun.
3. Explain the changes in adverbials of time and place and do some practice.
1). Tom said, ‘I lost a key here yesterday.’

2). Mary said, ‘I read the book here a week ago.’

3). Mike said, ‘I will leave for Beijing tomorrow.’

4. Explain other cases and give an example.

5. Ask the Ss to finish the Exercise on Page 9 of the textbook and check the answers.
Step 3 Reported speech: statements, questions and imperative sentences
1. Tell the Ss that we use noun clauses introduced by that to report statements and give
them some examples to practise.
1). She said, ‘Ads are an important part of our lives.’

2). ‘There are two main types of ads,’ the writer said to us.
_______________________________________________________________
Remind the Ss that besides say, ask and tell, there are other reporting verbs: advise,
explain, insist, promise, announce, suggest, warn.
2. Tell the Ss that we use noun clauses introduced by whether/if to report yes/no
questions, and we use noun clauses introduced by wh-words to report wh-questions.
Give them some examples to practise.
1). He asked, ‘Are you a student?’

3). He asked, ‘What will you do in the summer holidays?’

3. Tell the Ss to use ‘reporting verb+sb +(not) to do sth’ to report imperative sentences
and give them some examples to practise.
1). Don’t be late, Tom,' Jane said.

2). My mother said to me, 'Don’t take these weight-loss pills.'
_________________________________________________________________
Remind the Ss that the reporting verbs include: advise, encourage, invite, recommend,
warn.
4. Ask the Ss to finish the Exercise on Page 11 of the textbook and check the answers.
