A
During my growth, my parents always told me the importance of family and faith over material
possessions. Yet, money and all the new, interesting things it could buy did not escape me. As I
entered my freshman year, my bank card and I engaged in quite the dates. Between game-day
dresses, steak dinners and wonderful downtown Athens, I quickly used up 17 years' worth of
savings.
By the time summer came around, I didn't consider how much cash I had spent, or how many
thingsI had bought. I was focused on how much more money I would need for next autumn. When
I wasn't working, I was checking my bank account, try to figure out if my next paycheck would
afford those pillows that would look so cute in my new apartment. My bank account balance was
becoming a major source of stress in my life, creating tension with my financially smart parents
and causing me lasting concern. Finally, after a very heated argument with my Dad, I accepted the
truth: I simply could not afford money anymore.
I realized that I was much happier when money was just something in the bank. While the
clothes are pretty and those pillows are comfy, they lost their attraction right around the second a
new item caught my eye. At the end of the summer, I let go of my financial issues-after all, I can't
buy more time with my friends and family before going back to Athens.
I still check my bank account. I still go shopping once in a while. But now, those aren't
important. My money loss taught me that I shouldn't take wealth as a means of satisfaction and
happiness. Instead, my happiness should come from the moments and people that cannot be
bought, exchanged, or returned. There are some things that money can't buy. Go after them."
Unlike cash, this form of wealth grows the more I give.

Earthquake
Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don't worry because most cannot be felt. Only a
few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one in Sichuan. Thousands of people
died in it. So it's important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay
safely in an earthquake.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and
anything that could fall on you.
If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and
streetlights. These could fall on you.
If you are in a shop and far from the door, don't try to run to outside and rush for exits.
Everyone will be doing that and you'll find it hard getting out. Don't get into a lift during an
earthquake. Just hide under some strong covers near you.
If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as
quickly as you can. A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous.
Weather
Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have
heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in 1983 a study by scientists
showed that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after
the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very
hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower.Students in many schools of the United States
often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin
people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But
big people may have a bard time in bot summer. At about 18C,people become stronger.
Are you feeling sad, tired or unhappy today? It may be the weather's fault.

Spiderman saves the day
A comic book fan dressed as Spiderman became a real superhero on Saturday. He tackled a
thief who was trying to steal an expensive comic book.
Michael Wong, 24, was wearing a Spiderman costume to attend the annual Asian Festival of
Comics at the Sunny Sports Club. He saw the man putting the $350 comic book into his sports
bag.
‘There were about 50 people at the festival wearing superhero costumes that day,’ said Maddie
Tam, the festival organizer. ‘We enjoy seeing people dressed up as their favourite characters while
they shop for comics. However, we didn’t expect to see any of them actually stop a crime.’
The thief did not have a chance to escape. While Spiderman took hold of his sweatshirt, several
Star Wars characters blocked the exit. After a short struggle, the embarrassed robber gave the book
back.
‘At first, I thought it was part of the festival, ' said Sharon Luk, a rock climbing instructor
dressed as Wonder Woman. ‘Reading comics is fun but watching superheroes in action is even
better.'
‘ We were rather surprised when we arrived,’ said Police Constable Albert Mak. ‘It can be easily
seen that Spiderman hates to let criminals get away. Maybe he'll be interested in joining the
police.’
‘Crime-fighting is easy for Spiderman,’ Mr Wong said, laughing. ‘The poor man was a bit
unlucky as I teach judo (柔道)lessons here at the club.’
69. According to the report, Mr Wong went to the Sunny Sports Club to
A. catch a thief B. teach judo C. attend a festival D. steal a comic book
Michael Wong, 24, was wearing a Spiderman costume to attend
the annual Asian Festival of Comics”
70. In Line 1. the word " tackled' is closest in meaning to
A. stopped B. reported C. argued with D. cared for
【答案】A
71. The thief
A. escaped at last B. fought with Mr Wong
C. kept the comic book D. wore a Spiderman costume
took hold of his sweatshirt”可知,小偷穿的不是Spiderman costune,并且从文章最后一段Mr
Wong 说的话“The poor man was a bit unlucky as I teach judo (柔道)lessons here at the club.”
72. Sharon Luk felt about what she saw.
A. angry B. unhappy C. excited D. perfect
73. Which of the following is NOT true about the man who caught the thief?
A. superhero B. organizer C. club member D. judo coach
74. The article probably appears in a(n)
A. newspaper B. advertisement C. comic strip D. science magazine
【答案】A
