Problems and advice
I. 班级描述 Description of the class:
36 students from Senior 1, Class 6, male 14, female22. The class takes from
10:35-11:15 on Thursday morning. The students are generally enthusiastic, but
often tired: concentration sometimes suffers as a result. Students have
processed the new words and phrases in the unit with vocabulary learning
software online.
II. 教学目标 Objectives:
1. “What do you know about...?” To involve students in discussion of the
problems in the pictures in the text. To encourage students to match the advice
in the box to the pictures by writing the advice in the blanks.
2. To give students practice in reading to get main ideas(skimming):
A. Letter 1 is probably about a flowerpot falling ____ a flat.

B. Letter 2 is probably about ____ the underground.
a. riding b. bad behaviour on
C. Letter 3 is probably about how a rude checkout assistant

3. To give students practice in reading to get specific information(scanning)

B. In letter 2, who did the tough guys bully?
C. In letter 3, how much extra money did the writer keep?
4. To encourage the use of infinitives and -ing verb forms after perception verbs
and other verbs.
5. To give students a chance for oral communication using the given language.
IV. 教学步骤 Contents:
Objective 1: (Estimated time 7 minutes)
A. 教学预设 Context: Picture a, b, c and three possible suggestions in text as the
topic for discussion.
B. 教学活动组织 Activity and class organization: students in small groups discuss
what happens in picture a, b and c and give their suggestions. The teacher
introduce a way of agreeing and a way of disagreeing.
C. 教学辅助 Aids: none except blackboard for written explanation of language.
D. 语 言 Language: “I think we should...because+sentence.” “I agree,
and+additional remark.” “I’m afraid I don’t agree. (I think)+opinion.”
E. 可能的问题 Possible problems: Students have some difficulty in the use of the
language for the discussion. Students make a number of grammar mistakes in
the language they use. The teacher will not correct these mistakes(unless
serious) and will then use gentle correction.
Objective 2: (Estimated time 8 minutes)
A. 教学预设 Context: Three letters in the text.
B. 教学活动组织 Activity and class organization: Students look at the pictures
and skim the first paragraphs of the excerpts from the letters on the page, and
then circle the best answer for each question. Students check each others’
answers in pairs. The teacher then conducts feedback.
C. 教学辅助 Aids: reading passage of Unit 5 in the textbook. Students need
paper and a pen.
D. 语言 Language: the language of the text.
E. 可 能 的 问 题 Possible problems: Students may not use the right
skill(skimming). The teacher will make his instructions especially clear in this
respect.
Objective 3: (Estimated time 5 minutes)
A. 教学预设 Context: Three letters in the text.
B. 教学活动组织 Activity and class organization: Students scan the excerpts to
answer the following questions.
A. In letter 1, who did the police question?
B. In letter 2, who did the tough guys bully?
C. In letter 3, how much extra money did the writer keep?
可能的问题 Possible problems: Students may not use the right skill(scanning). As
for skimming, the teacher will also make his instructions especially clear in this
respect.
Objective 4: (Estimated time 8 minutes)
A. 教学预设 Context:
A dialogue between a customer and a salesman, Mark:
Customer: None of the things I ordered have arrived. They’re three weeks late.
I expect the goods to arrive on time.
Mark: I’m sorry we’ve kept you waiting so long. Can I find out what the
problem is and then ring you back?
B. 教学活动组织 Activity and class organization: The teacher introduces students
to the dialogue above. Students then make their own sentences with the use of
the infinitives and -ing verb forms after perception verbs and other verbs in
lockstep.
C. 教学辅助 Aids: blackboard and projector to show the dialogue on the screen.
D. 语言 Language: words will be used: hear, see, watch, feel etc.
E. 可能的问题 Possible problems: Students may sometimes be confused with
which verbs are followed by the infinitives and which verbs are followed by -ing
verb forms. Every error and mistake with these sentences by students will be
corrected.
Objective 5: (Estimated time 12 minutes)
A. 教学预设 Context: Someone has a problem and ask for advice.
B. 教学活动组织 Activity and class organization:
Students work in groups to discuss the letters in reading section.
C. 语言 Language:
In this situation, I would/wouldn’t... I think the ... is to blame for...
I (do not) agree with the actions of... It was wrong/right of him/her to...
It was important to...It’s proper/appropriate to...
I suggest he/she should...I advise him/her to...
D. 可能的问题 Possible problems: Length of the discussion.
