Teaching objectives
By the end of this class, students will:
- familiarize themselves with the meanings of new words
- learn two reading strategies and use them to quickly grasp the main idea of the passage and to
locate specific information
- learn how to care for their hair, including the choice of hair products, the procedures of
using the products and things to consider while considering which hairstyle to choose
- understand the importance of caring for hair
- be able to give advice to an imaginary customer on how to care for her hair

Pre-reading
1. Warm-up questions: T asks Ss questions about hair care.

- what kind of hairstyle suits you?

Introduce the topic and trigger
the interest of students
While-reading
1. Mini-lecture: T reminds Ss of the idea of reading strategy,
and asks Ss to explain the concept and key points of
skimming (read quickly to get the main idea of the passage).
Review reading strategies and
encourage students to use them
- What is skimming and what is the function of skimming?
- Where can you usually find the main idea of the passage?
T introduces the idea of heading.
2. Ss skim the passage and find out the genre and the readers of
the passage.
3. Ss review the concept of scanning and the three steps of r
scanning.
- Step 1: identify the key words in the questions/statements
- step 2: locate the key information in the passage based on the
key words
- step 3: read the key information and answer the questions
4. Ss scan the first part of the passage for specific information.
