School: Students: Teacher: Date: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Teaching Material: Unit 3 More Reading ‘Learn to care for plants’ Oxford English Material Analysis The text is a brief introduction of three plants which can be used to decorate our home in spring, i.e. common white jasmine, the Yulan magnolia and the golden ball cactus. As most students in my class live in flats and are not very familiar with gardening, the introduction of two some succulent plants which are more closely related to their life are added to enrich the learning material. Learner analysis The targeted learners are senior one students from Minhang High school with medium language proficiency. As students may not show so much interest in the topic of plants, some questions about the interest aspects of plants are raised for students to explore before class, which arouse their interest and lay a foundation for their following procedures. What’s more, the students are accustomed to answering questions with only a few words, which obviously hinders their improvement in oral English. Therefore, during the teaching process, the teacher should have the awareness of guiding the students to talk in complete sentences. Teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students are expected to 1. guess the meaning of new words from the context with the help of pictures, such as ‘bush’ ‘vine’ and ‘litter ’ 2. grasp the main idea of the passage by skimming and scanning Teaching Plan 3. learn about the characteristics of and care tips on the five plants introduced 4. recommend one plant for gardening and give advice on how to care for it Teaching focuses the characteristics of and care tips on the five plants introduced Teaching difficulties How to guide the students to grasp the feature of each plant and lead them to apply what they learned to deal with the specific situations. To arouse the students’ interest and introduce the topic of caring for plants. T—Ss While- reading Skimming the passage to find out the three plants to decorate our home. To help the students have a whole picture of the passage. T—Ss Finding information about the features and usage of common white jasmine. To help students sort out the information about the features of white jasmine. T—Ss Reading Para 2 to locate detailed information about the Yulan magnolia. To help the students sort out the characteristics of the Yulan magnolia. T—Ss Guessing the meaning of ‘litter’, ‘ideal’ and ‘moist’ from the context. To guide the students to guess the meaning of new word in context. T—Ss Reading Para 3 and fill in the blanks about the golden ball cactus. To lead the students to find out the detailed information of the golden ball cactus. T—Ss Working with their partner to find out the features and care tips of the fleshy plant they are reading about. To help the students learn more about the features of succulents. T—Ss S—Ss Sharing their information with the other group. To stimulate their interest by giving them different reading materials. S—Ss Post-reading Performing a role play to give advice on what to plant and how to care for the plant according to the give situation. To lead the students to overview the knowledge learned about the plants. S—Ss Assignments Choose a plant, whether one in the textbook or not, and write an introduction of its features and care tips. Find more interesting aspects of plants and write a short report.
