1 Learn to care for plants Date: Teaching objectives: Knowledge and skills 1) With the teacher’s instructions, students will be able to extract the key information and acquire the gist for each paragraph in the body of the reading passage 2) Students will be able to describe the plants mentioned in the passage with the focused vocabulary. 3) With the help of the Chinese clues given by the teacher and the focused vocabulary, students will be able to apply what they have learned to describing the plants on the campus. Process and strategies 1) Skimming and scanning integrated in reading aloud. 2) Summarizing and categorizing useful information Emotions and attitudes With the acquired knowledge and skills, students will take notice of the plants at school and develop their awareness of beauty. Elicit the topic and figure out the target plants in the passage. 2 While-reading 1. Read the passage once, and match the plants with their features. 2. Read the passage again, and fill in the missing information on the fact cards. 3. Share the fact cards answers and list the key vocabulary.(words and patterns) 4. Introduce the three plants with a beginning like “I am a jasmine bush/Yulan magnolia/golden ball cactus”. 1. Get a general idea of the passage, making clear the author’s writing purpose and major features of each plant. 2. Rearrange the details of each plant, and get a clearer picture of the three plants 3. Clarify the key words and their useful patterns. 4. Help practise students’ retelling and speaking. Post-reading 1. Write the body part of a recommendation article, describing three plants on the campus. 2. Share 2-3 compositions in class. 1. Practise the key vocabulary learned previously 2. Correct the errors in the students’ composition. Homework 1. Read the passage on P. 45 after class. 2. Finish the written recommendation. 3. Finish Ex. in 《评估与指导》on P. 68-69.
