Content: Reading---Unit 3 (S2A Oxford) The many meanings of colour
Teacher:
Learner profiles:
The teacher is conducting a demonstrating lesson in an unfamiliar class of Grade Two. The
students are interested in this topic,but maybe they lack the professional words and knowledge
relating to the topic .
Teaching objective(s):
At the end of the class, the students are able to:
1. understand the meanings of the new words in the text; (ambitious;optimistic; energetic;
adventurous; )
2. Get a knowledge of the objects related to colours and the different usage of colour in various fields ;
3. improve the skimming and scanning skills while dealing with the passage.
4. develop the ability to present own opinions about the meanings of colours used in the school uniforms.
Teaching Aids: multi media, blackboard
Procedure:
Teaching stages Activities Purposes
Pre-reading T asks ss to look at some pictures and
recommend ‘Black Swan’ to ss and explains
the different meanings of black and white in
the film by playing the movie trailer .
T introduces the basic information about the
author Luscher as well as his personality
test .
To elicit the topic ‘ The many meanings of
colour’.
To activate Ss’ background knowledge
about colour for later use.
To warm up some topic-based words and
phrases and raise the students’ interest of
the topic.
While-reading Skimming:
Ask students to look through the first sentense
of each paragraph, find out the main idea of
each paragraph by giving ss some key words .
Ask ss to finish the match.
To cultivate students’ ability to figure out
the information about the article.
To guide Ss to get a general knowledge of
structure of the passage and try to develop
ss’s sense that colours cover a variety of
meaning in food industry,banks as well as
the different organizations.
To expose students to the topic situation
and get students prepared for the following
thinking about the colour usage in daily
life.

While-reading Scanning: 1)Ask students to scan the second
paragraph and find the different characters of the
colours
2) Find the objects in nature in blue, green ,red
and black and also the effects on people.
3)Show the pictures of KFC & Mcdonald’s and
ask the students the reason why some restaurants
are painted into red and what colours are always
used in the food industry.
4) to find what colours are used in bank and
travel agents and think about the reasons of the
colour usage.
5)Give students some pictures about flags and
organizations and ask ss the meanings of these
colours.
To get Ss to learn the main contents of the
text and learn some new words from the
context.
To expose students to the topic situation
and get students prepared for the following
thinking and speaking in English .
Post-reading 1) Divide the students into different groups and
ask them to have a discussion about the
preference of school uniforms as well as the
reasons supporting to the ideas and design the
school uniforms and give it the favorite colour
2) Give a short presentation according to the
structure given to illustrate the meanings of the
colours used in the school uniforms design..
3)(Time permitting)other groups can make a
comment on the other groups design and give a
mark.
Give them the presentation requirement to the
students
Give students a checklist about their
performance and tell them how to make it better
1) .To activate what Ss have learnt by
giving opinions about the given topic.
2) To develop students’ sense of
cooperation and practice the ability of
speaking in front of people..
Conclusion: The teacher makes comments on students’
works and tell them the teacher’s opinions
about school uniform design and give a
summary: Colour is a powerful tool. It can
be used to help us ,to warn us, to relax us,
to control us and to make us buy things.
To intensify what has been taught,
activated and reinforced in class and
highlight the importance of colour in our
daily life.
Assignments: 1.Read the text again until you can read it fluently.
2.Review the benefits of colours in our life and write a summary about the various usages
of colour.(no more than 60 words).
