Step2. Lead-in
To make students know the meanings of unavoidable and optional. Help them
understand the story of Rose.
1. Show students a picture. (Growing older is unavoidable).
2. Show students a poem. (Life is optional).
What is life?
They say it from B to D.
From birth to death,
But what’s between B and D?
It’s a C, so what is a C?
It’s a ____ (creation, challenge, change, choice ...)
Live well and it will never go wrong.
Step3. Reading
1. Ask students to read the Para1-6 and answer the four questions. Make
students know the story of Rose.
1) Who is the heroine(主人公)?
2) How old was she?
3) She was a ____________ student at that age.
4) Why did she do it?
2. Discussion.
Do you think it is worthwhile for so old a lady to receive college education?
3. Show students three pictures about Rose’s college life and ask students to read the
Para7-8 to underline the sentences which include the three phrases. To make students
know more about Rose’s college life.
4. Speech
1) Ask students to read the speech together and finish the following tasks. To make
students understand the meaning of Rose’s speech and learn something from the
speech.
2) Which sentence of the speech do you like most? Why? Underline your favorite
sentence.
Step4. Speaking
1. Show students a poem about life to help them write a poem or passage by
themselves.
What is life?
Life is like a cup of coffee,
Sweet, bitter and sour taste.
Life is like a mirror,
reflecting
What you show it.
2. Ask students to write a passage or a poem about “What is life?”
3. Ask some students to share their poems with all the students and gather the poems
and stick them on the apple tree to make students know “No pains, no gains”.
4. Show some famous people’s views of life to make students know more about life.
Step5. Summary
Show students a picture and ask them the words of the picture. Let them understand
life is colorful.
Step6. Homework
Please write a passage “What is life?”
