A "Don Quijote"by Cervantes Saavedra Much reading and book-learning can drive you to try and become one of the characters in your favorite novels. This is what happens to Don Quixote, who attempts many knightly (骑士) acts while stopped by a world that has rejected knightly virtues. Cervantes combines all three elements-madness,comedy,and fantasy-in between conversations and adventures. "A Treatise of Human Nature"by David Hume Examining a scientifically applied moral philosophy is the goal of this Treatise. Building on early complaints against the endless guesses and arguments between philosophers, this work promotes a move away from metaphysical speculation(形而上学的思辨) and a permanent shift toward systems based on observational fact. "None"by B.Kovner Einstein's favourite reading during his last few months of his life were humorist stories of B. Kovner,a writer for the Jewish Daily Forward.Kovner wrote a series of humorist stories in Yiddish for the forward. “The Brothers Karamasov"by Dostoevsky In the book, each character is representative of one of the ruling classes. There is the father Fyodor, the landowner who is careless about his land, but greedy in using its produce for himself. There's Dmitri, who has been passed around from house to house. And gentle Alyosha, the mystic peacemaker.Throughout are themes of love, law, and duty, which makes this one of the best Dostoyesky books to read. 21.Which book probably explores the link between science and human nature? A.None B.Don Quijote C.A Treatise of Human Nature D.The Brothers Karamasov 22.Which of the following contributes to the popularity of The Brothers Karamasov? A.Rich imagination. B.Humor applied to writing. C.Themes of love, law and duty. D.Characters representing ruling classes. 23.What's the purpose of the passage? A.To inform readers of the books. B.To share studies of the books. C.To evaluate the contents of the books. D.To compare the features of the books. B The other day a big, ugly, black bat found its way to the bathroom of my house and hung, upside down, over the toilet bowl. As"the man of the house",I was asked to rid the house of the awful creature.I grabbed a pillow and held the broom.I quickly opened the bathroom door and threw the pillow at the bat.It didn't move. Then that old feeling started to come over me.It was the same feeling I experienced when I was sent down the stairs in the middle of the night to see what made a noise. The feeling can be summed up in one word-trapped. All men,I think, sometimes have had that feeling of being trapped in some male role.It may be something as simple as having to carve the chicken before it is served,or having to pretend that you know something about car engines when the car won't start. However, women nowadays seem to have the freedom to be themselves. They can repair cars or be fire fighters.Yet men appear to be more afraid to do something different. It's as if being a man is not what you are,but what you do and the way you do it. As I came towards the fierce and frightening bat,I wondered what would happen if I had simply told my wife that I won't do it-that she could get it out,or else call someone in the morning. But I couldn't do that!I am the man!I slowly opened the window and closed the toilet bowl cover.I then, carefully, lifted the broom over my head and swept the bat out the window.Just like that,it was gone. My wife was so pleased and in the morning,my son thought I was a hero. They asked me how I had got rid of the bat.I started to tell them-but then stopped.A man doesn't talk of such things. 24.Why does the author mention the old feeling in Paragraph 1? A.To recall the old days. B.To show his fear of darkness. C.To predict his fight with the bat. D.To highlight the situation of being trapped. 25.What does the author mean by mentioning women 's freedom in Paragraph 2? A.Men are forced to bear household burdens. B.Men have to live up to social expectations. C.Women are free to choose their jobs. D.Women are equal to men in workplaces. 26.The last sentence of the passage implies that the author A.believes silence is gold B.feels proud of himself C.will do what he has to do D.will be what he wants to be 27.How does the author sound in the passage? A.Angry. B.Humorous. C.Desperate. 1D.Serious. C On July 17,2017,Olympic diver Greg Louganis and his birth father,Fouvale Lutu, finally wrapped their arms around each other in their first official father-son hug."It was just meant to be, Louganis said of joining his father in Honolulu for an extended Lutu family reunion."It's so wonderful to have him with us,"said Lutu.whose three other children were also in attendance."And this is more of a beginning,"added Louganis. But the four-day celebration also marked the conclusion of an emotional lifelong journey for Louganis,57,who was put up for adoption as a baby and struggled for years with the feeling that his biological parents never loved him.His adoptive parents were always open with him about that. But the adoption organization had lost Louganis' s files in a fire, and unanswered questions led to troubled times for the young athlete.Later,Louganis got to know his biological parents had been young and had no choice in giving him up for adoption."That kind of helped ease the question of whether I was loved,"he said. Feeling more"at peace"about his family,Louganis turned his focus to diving.By the time he was 28,he'd become a four-time Olympic gold medalist.Among his biggest fans was Lutu, who for years had quietly followed his son's life from afar. Then in 1984,Lutu decided to meet him when Louganis was in Honolulu. Face-to-face with his son for the first time,Lutu was emotional."Like me,he's a man of few words. But he told me he'd wanted to raise me,"said Louganis.Despite his skepticism,Louganis continued to meet with Lutu."He never asked for anything,"said Louganis."He just wanted to know if I was okay and that I was happy." The reunion gave Louganis a lot to look forward to."I have family there,"he said, almost in disbelief."It's an incredible gift that I've been given." 28.What happened to Louganis on July 17,2017? A.He won an Olympic gold medal. B.He officially joined the Lutu family. C.He met his birth father for the first time. D.He began his journey to find more relatives. 29.What does the underlined word"that”in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.The truth that he was adopted. B.The fact that his files were lost. C.The reason why he was abandoned. D.The belief that he was not loved. 30.In Lougnis's eyes,Lutu is_ A.considerate and caring B.courageous and calm C.optimistic and generous D.ambitious and traditional 31.After the family reunion,Lougnis felt a sense of A.shock B.belonging C.relief D.achievement D篇 Education appears to protect older adults especially women, against memory loss, according to a study by investigators at Georgetown University Medical Center. The Study tested declarative memory in 704 older adults(58-98 years of age).Declarative memory refers to our ability to remember events facts.and words, such as where you put your keys or the name of that new neighbor The investigators found that their memory performance became progressively worse with aging However more years of early-life education countered these Tosses, especially in women. For example, the declarative memory abilities of an 80-year-old woman with a bachelor's degree would be as good as those of a 60-vear-old woman with a high school education. So,four extra years of education make up for the memory losses from 20 years of aging. Simply said, learning brings about learning"says the study's senior investigator,Michael Unman."Since learning new information in declarative memory is easier if it is related to knowledge we already have, more knowledge from more education should result in better memory abilities, even years later,"adds the study's lead author,Jana Reifegerste. Evidence suggests that girls often have better declarative memory than boys,so education may lead to greater knowledge gains in girls,"says Ullman.“Education may thus particularly benefit memory abilities in women, even years later in old age." The study tested individuals in a non-Western population.Participants varied in the number of years of education, from none at all to graduate studies.Future research is needed to test whether the findings generalize to other populations,Ullman says. " These findings may be important, especially considering the rapidly aging population globally,"Reifegerste says."The results argue for further efforts to increase access to education." " Education has also been found to delay the beginning of Alzheimer's disease,"Ullman says."We believe that our findings may shed light on why this occurs." 32.The underlined"counter"in Paragraph 2 probably means" A.cancel B.change C.replace D.reduce 33.What does the underlined word"it"in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.New information. B.Declarative memory. C.Former education. D.Better memory ability. 34.The research findings may help A.slow down the process of aging B.promote the development of education C.advance the study of Alzheimer's disease D.ensure the equal rights of women' s education 35.The passage mainly talks about that A.declarative memory abilities fail with aging B.women should try to obtain a bachelor's degree C.learning regularly helps improve old adults' memory D.early-life education helps prevent memory loss in old age 阅读 21-23 CCA 24-27 DBCB 28-31 BAAB 32-35 DACD A 篇是四本书的简介,文章简单,快速阅读查找出定位词即可选出正确答案。 Throughout are themes of love, law, and duty, which makes this one of the best Dostoyesky books to read“可知本书的主题”love, law ,and duty”是促成其受欢迎的因素,所以本题选 C。 However, women nowadays seem to have the freedom to be themselves.”与第二段最后一 句”It's as if being a man is not what you are, but what you do and the way you do it.’可知女人们在当 下有做自己的自由而作为男人不在于你是谁而在于你做了什么和你如何去做这件事,因此社会对 男人们的期许是男人们做了什么与如何去做的,所以本题选 B。 第 26 题 C 由文章最后一句话”A man doesn't talk of such things”又由前文作者成功把蝙蝠驱逐出 去妻子因此非常高兴,儿子以他为英雄,又由第二段最后一句”It's as if being a man is not what you are, but what you do and the way you do it.’ C 篇 第 28 题 B 定位到第一段第二行,“finally wrapped their arms around each other in their first official father-son hug”, 可知 Louganis 第一次正式加入了他原先的家庭。而据第三段倒数第二行可知, 他与父亲的第一次见面应在 1984 年。 第 29 题 A 根据文章上下文,可定位至第二段第二行处“who was put up for adoption as a baby and struggled for years that...” 所以可知是 Louganis 的养父母从来没有对他隐瞒他是被领养的这件事。 B 选项的文件及 C 选项被抛弃的理由在后文才有提及,无法被指代。 第 30 题 A 由多年默默关注儿子最终决定与其相认的决定及第四段倒数一二行,“he never asked for anything” “he just wanted to know if I was okay and that I was happy”可知,lutu 是一位考虑周到、 十分细心体贴又关怀儿子的父亲。 第 31 题 B 定位至文本最后一小节 Louganis 的话,“I have a family there”, “it's an incredible gift that I've been given.”可知他获得了一种归属感。 D 篇 第 32 题 D 根据下文对文本的阐释“the declarative memory abilities of an 80-year-old woman with a bachelor's degree would be as good as those of a 60-year-old woman with a high school education”可 知,教育可以减少记忆能力的衰退。 第 33 题 A 根据上下文可知“since learning new information in declarative memory is easier...” A China has 410K 5G base stations China built 257,000 new 5G base stations in the first half of the year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). China Satellite Navigation Office B A China’s face-swapping app that allows users to superimpose(叠加)their own likeness over characters in movies or TV shows has rapidly become one of the country’s most download apps. But it has also triggered concerns about the issue of privacy. Released on Friday, the Zao app went viral as Chinese users pursued the chance to act out scenes from well-known movies. This is done using “deepfake” technology, which has already caused concerns elsewhere over its potential misuse. Users provide a series of selfies in which they blink, open their mouths or assume other expressions. The app will then realistically change the person’s animated likeness onto movies, TV shows or other similar content. But this has also resulted in privacy concerns as the app’s policy reportedly gave it “free, permanent, transferable, and re-licenseable” rights to all user-generated content. Apart from worrying that their personal information can be disclosed, users are also concerned that the app, through facial recognition technology, can compromise their online payment accounts. On Sunday, the app issued a statement promising to modify its privacy policy. It also assured users that the app will not result in any compromise to their payment accounts. The app has since changed its terms to ensure that it will not use headshots or videos uploaded by users other than to improve the app. It also promised to remove from its servers any content that was uploaded but subsequently deleted by users. Zao is owned by Momo Inc, a Tinder-like Chinese dating service that is listed on the Us Nasdaq. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spoke to the developer of the AI face-changing app on Wednesday. The Ministry’s department of network security said it demanded the company sick to relevant laws regarding the collection of personal information. Apart from calling on the company to standardize its terms of agreement it also made it clear that the company should do its utmost to ensure the protection of user data. 24. What’s the main idea of this passage? A. The face-changing app is becoming popular. B. The Zao app has revealed personal information. C. Deep fake technology is applied in a new app. D. There’re potential worries about face-changing app. 25. What do we know about the Zao app? A. Users provide smiling photos to act out scenes from famous movies. B. The app can find likeness between users and actors in the movies. C. The technology applied in the app can be misused in other places. D. The app can have access to users’ online payment accounts. 26. What did the app promise to modify? A. Privacy policy uploaded by users B. Privacy policy to assure the safety C. Any private content deleted by users D. The compromise with users' accounts 27. What The Ministry's department of network security said in the last paragraph is to _______. A. give some possible solutions to the problem B. give some particular reasons for the phenomenon C. present some current difficulties of the concern D. present some simple tips on payment accounts C Delivery Robots May Soon Be Knocking at Your Door With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg-the so-called last mile-of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is Amazon. ollowing a successful eight-month test run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company’s Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019. The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the ability to carry small or medium-sized packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles(障碍), such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors(传感器)can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway. While Amazon is focusing on home deliveries, San Francisco-based Starship Technologies has its eyes set on universities. On August 20, 2019, the company announced plans to use thousands of robots to deliver food and other things to students at college campuses across the country. Unlike Scout, Starship’s robots are seasoned workers. They have been tested in over 100 cities in 20 different countries and successfully completed over 100, 000 deliveries. Meanwhile, food and grocery delivery company Postmates’ robots are currently making their rounds along the busy San Francisco streets. Also in testing, the robots can carry up to 50 pounds and travel 30 miles on a single battery charge. Though the eco-friendly robots will help free our streets of bicycles and large delivery trucks that typically send packages, they have some limitations. They are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reach consumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get solved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to meet the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries. 28. What does the underlined part in para l mean? A. much more help B. very close distance C. substitute for human D. the last section 29. We can learn from the passage that ________ A. Powerful robots sensors are gaining popularity in delivery. B. The Postmates’ robots focus on students' food and grocery delivery. C. The Scout can avoid obstacles because it moves at a regular pace. D. Delivery robots have turned up in universities to serve students. 30.What’s author’s attitude towards delivery robots? A. Objective B. Optimistic C. Pessimistic D. Cautious 31.From which is the text probably taken? A. a biology textbook B. a health magazine C. a newspaper D. a travel brochure D I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know the press is under siege these days. We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To---to tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies.I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: what I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue. They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military. And there’s someone else. Recy Taylor, a name I know and I think you should know, too. In 1944. Recy Taylor was a young wife and mother walking home from a church service she’d attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church. They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up. And I just hope--I just hope that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years, and even now tormented, goes marching on. It was somewhere in Rosa Parks’ heart almost 11 years later, when she made the decision to stay seated on that bus in Montgomery, and it’s here with every woman who chooses to say, “Me too.” And every man--every man who chooses to listen. In my career, what I’ve always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave. To say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere and how we overcome. I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights. So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again. 32.According to Paragraph 1, why is the press more important than ever before? A. The press can help spread the news among the public. B. the press is meant to educate people about important values. C. The press allows people to share stories with each other. D. The press can help uncover the truth in these tough times. 33.What can be inferred about women from Paragraph 2 and 3? A. They are part of the world of tech and politics and business. B. Their contributions have long been recognized. C. They have sacrificed a lot for their families and dreams. D. they are always successful in their career. 34.From the passage, we can safely conclude that Rosa Parks is a/an _________ lady. A. trustworthy B. determined C. ambitious D. stubborn 35. In the last paragraph, the speaker hopes for a new day when _________. A. every man and woman can really enjoy equality. B. girls will grow into magnificent women. C. every body can speak up “Me too”. B Blue sheep, native to the Himalayas, lends its name to a small handicraft(手工艺)shop in downtown Chengdu.Rachael Pinniger from the U.K.opened the store, which offers a wide range of handmade items,in 2013.All of them were made by people with disabilities or serious diseases in remote areas in China. The 75-year-old woman was formerly a medical practitioner(执业医师)。Before settling down in Chengdu 10 years ago,Rachael had spent more than 40 years working in 15 different countries in Asia and Africa, providing medical services and training local physicians. While living in the Tibet Autonomous Region, she found that many patients were too poor to have their illnesses treated. While many of them were skilled in making traditional crafts, they had no market for their handmade items. "For these people, the most important thing is to help them integrate(融入)into society," Rachael thought."That's not necessarily something the government can do.It's up to all of us to give them a sense of confidence and self-respect." That inspired Rachael to open a store to help these disadvantaged people bring their crafts to the market so that they could make money and receive effective treatment. She spent nearly all of her life savings collecting items from them and making other necessary preparations. More than 700 people have benefited from Rachael's initiative(融入),although she has to battle for years to make ends meet with the very limited market, which remains her biggest challenge. Despite financial pressures, she has continued to expand her market by encouraging her overseas friends to buy the products as home decorations or gifts. She collects feedback from customers and gives the craftsmen suggestions on how to improve their items. To help them pick up professional skills,Rachael also invites them to participate in training courses. As a world traveler,Rachael has no plans for her next destination. At the moment, she will continue to try her best to keep the shop afloat to help more people get through their hard times. “Mother Teresa's words,'I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person,'have always been my motto.Anytime we can help one person;it makes life worthwhile, even if it is not the world,”she said. 24.Which of the following statements about Rachael Pinniger is TRUE? A.She left her home country in her twenties. B.She had to borrow money to open Blue Sheep. C.She had settled down in China before retirement. D.She always dreamed of running her own business in China. 25.What is special about Rachael's shop in Chengdu? A.It was co-founded by seriously ill patients. B.It provides effective treatment for the disabled. C.It sells products made by the disadvantaged. D.It provides customers with craft-making training. 26.Rachael is still struggling to_. A.expand into the overseas market B.balance the budget for Blue Sheep C.involve more craftsmen in her initiative D.obtain immediate feedback from customers 27.According to the article, the establishment of Blue Sheep. A.preserves Chinese traditional handicrafts B.calls on people to respect the disadvantaged C.provides help for people in need of social integration D.removes the need for government aid to the disadvantaged C A ten-year-old sperm whale(抹香鲸)was found dead on a beach in Scotland.A necropsy(尸检) revealed that nearly 100 kilograms of plastic and other trash had formed clumps( 硬 块 ) in its digestive system. The tragedy quickly made headlines. Why would a top predator in the ocean eat gloves, rope, and plastic cups? Conventional wisdom suggests that marine animals eat plastic because it is there and they don't know any better. It is true that plastic may smell like food to some of them. But that doesn't explain why only certain types of whales-deep-diving toothed whales, such as sperm whales and pilot whales-turn up dead on beaches with stomachs full of plastic. It's possible, says Savoca, that plastic trash sounds like food to toothed whales. These species hunt deep in the ocean, sometimes nearly 500 meters below the surface, where it's pitch black(漆黑)。 They use echolocation(回声定位)to hunt for food, typically squid(乌贼)。 By contrast, baleen whales(须鲸),including humpbacks and blue whales, have natural filters(过 滤器)for their food.Baleen, the brush-like filter-feeding system they have in place of teeth,as well as their narrow throats, keeping them from swallowing anything much larger than the krill(磷虾群)that forms the basis of their diet. That could help explain why baleen whales are not ending up with plastic filled stomachs. Fifty years ago, there was almost no plastic in the ocean. The lifespan of a large whale can be twice that long.In the lifetime of a single whale,we went from an ocean with no plastic to hundreds of thousands of tons of it.Plastic comes on top of other factors affecting life in the ocean-climate change, overfishing, shipping traffic, and noise pollution."it's a real shame because their lives are challenging enough even without the additional pressure we put onto them,"says Savoca. 28.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A.That plastic smells like food to toothed whales. B.That marine animals started to eat plastic decades ago. C.That a number of toothed whales are found dead on beaches every year. D.That conventional wisdom about why marine animals eat plastic doesn't apply to all whales. 29.Which of the following statements DOESN'T explain why toothed whales are more easily harmed by plastic pollution than baleen whales? A.They don't feed on krill. B.They live in the dark depths of the ocean. C.They are not born with brush-like filter-feeding systems. D.They don't determine the location of their food with their eyes. 30.What does the author want to emphasize in the last paragraph? A.Whales have a longer lifespan than humans. B.Plastic has a negative effect on climate change. C.Great changes have taken place in the ocean in the past 50 years. D.Plastic pollution has worsened already serious issues affecting marine life. 31.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Different diets, different fates B.Silent killers in the ocean C.Plastic trash in-the ocean D.Saving whales D Hit Pause on GONE WITH THE WIND Congratulations to WarnerMedia on the launch of HBO Max.As an HBO subscriber,I am excited about the width of programs and films offered on the platform. While I am sure the streaming service will continue to improve with time:Please consider removing Gone With the Wind from your library of films. As a filmmaker,I get that movies are often brief descriptions of moments in history. They reflect not only the attitudes and opinions of those involved in their creation, but also those of the present culture. As such, even the most well-intentioned films can fall short in how they represent marginalized(边缘化的)communities. Gone With the Wind, however, has its own unique problem. It does not just"fall short"with regard to representation. It is a film that glorifies(美化)the American South during the Civil War.It is a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to continue some of the most painful stereotypes(刻板印象)of people of colour. It is a film that romanticizes the Confederacy in a way that continues to give legitimacy(合法性)to the notion that the secessionist movement(分离运动)is something better or more noble than what it was.And it continues to give cover to those who falsely claim that clinging to the traditional imagine of the plantation era is a matter of"heritage, not hate." Let me be clear:I would just ask, after a period of time has passed, that the film be re-introduced to the HBO Max platform along with other films that give a complete picture of what slavery and the Confederacy truly were.Or,perhaps it could be paired with conversations about narratives and why it is important to have many voices sharing stories from different perspectives rather than merely those strengthening the views of the present culture. Currently, there is not even a warning before the film. I know taking down a film-particularly a classic Hollywood film-seems like a big request. But it is not nearly as big a demand as when your children ask whether they can join protests in the streets against racism,or when they come to you wanting to know what you did to make the world a better place. I plan on keeping my subscription to HBO Max.But I hope that those in decision-making positions at WarnerMedia can understand how painful it is to scroll through the platform's library and see it promote one film in particular that has helped to continue the racism that is causing angry and sad Americans to take to the streets. 32.Which of the following statements about HBO Max is NOT true? A.It was a newly launched streaming platform. B.It is free to all internet users in the United States. C.It is a streaming platform supported by WarnerMedia. D.It features a wide range of TV programs and hit films. 33.According to the author, the main problem with Gone With the Wind lies in the fact that the film A.ignores the issue of slavery to a large degree B.shows hate crimes in 19th-century America C.tells the dark history of the American Civil War D.questions the legitimacy of the secessionist movement 34.What does the underlined word"narratives"in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Cultures B.Pictures C.Stories D.Events 35.According to the author,Gone With the Wind could be reintroduced to the platform if. A.more children join protest against racism B.warnings are issued before the movie C.more films about marginalized communities are available D.different voices about the film's plot are heard by the public 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 21-23 ABC 24-27 ACBC 28-31 DADB 32-33 BACD 苏州 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Parents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades.Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child’s class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女)where schools expect them to act as partners in their children’s education.Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn. Keith Robinson, the author of the study, said,“I really don’t know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids’ education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents’ help with homework.”Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the tasks.“They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now,or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they’re still offering advice.” Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant. Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because“children with good academic success do have involved parents”,admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success.“A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives.” 21.The underlined expression“parental involvement”in Paragraph 1 probably means______. A.parents’ expectation on children’s health B.parents’ participation in children’s education C.parents’ control over children’s life D.parents’ plan for children’ future 22.What is the major finding of Robinson’s study? A.Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way. B.Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging. C.Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected. D.Parents are not able to help with children’s homework. 23.The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should______. A.help children realize the importance of schooling B.set a specific life goal for their children C.spend more time improving their own lives D.take a more active part in school management B The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business,but,unfortunately,full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance. On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other species(物种)that depend on the trees’ flowers and fruits.Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home.As a result, many species are quickly dying out. On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens(威 胁)human life.Medical research often makes use of the forests’ plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world’s groundwater. Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations(种植园)could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that the loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic(酸性的)soil conditions. It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee. 24.What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4? A.It limits the spread of new growing techniques. B.It leads to air pollution and global warming. C.It slows down the loss of shade trees. D.It improves local soil conditions. 25.The purpose of the text is to______. A.entertain  B.advertise  C.instruct  D.persuade   26.Where does this text probably come from? A.An agricultural magazine. B.A medical journal. C.An engineering textbook. D.A tourist guide. 27.Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text? (P:Paragraph) C When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of a cliff(悬崖)and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea. Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds.Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search. Three days later,a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall.Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead.He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country. For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day,the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holden if he would like his dog back. A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he sounded the alarm,a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy. The dog had initially been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)but had survived by drinking water from a fresh stream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge.“The dog was very thin and hungry,”Steve Tregear said.“It was a very lucky dog.She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,”he added. It was,as Mr. Holden admitted,“a minor miracle(奇迹)”. 28.The dog Judy fell down the cliff when she was______. A.rescuing her owner B.caught in a hurricane C.blocked by a rock D.running after a sheep 29.Who spotted Judy after the accident? A.A birdwatcher. B.A student from Leeds. C.Six volunteers. D.The coastguard of Cornwall. 30.What can we infer from the text? A.People like to travel with their pets. B.Judy was taken to the fields for hunting. C.Luck plays a vital role in Judy’s survival. D.Holden cared little where Judy was buried. 31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Miracle of the Coastguard. B.Surviving a Hurricane. C.Dangers in the Wild. D.Coming Back from the Dead. D Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how lifestyle and decisions about eating may affect weight.Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However,Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over. According to Dr.Joseph Mercola,a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their lifestyle. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities.Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full.So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition,he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States,Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat,decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food.Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym. In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent lifestyle changes may be affecting French eating habits.Today the rate of obesity—or extreme overweight—among adults is only 6%.However,as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17%—and is growing. 32.In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr.Joseph Mercola? A.They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently. B.They squeeze eating between the other daily activities. C.They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyle. D.They usually eat too much canned and frozen food. 33.This text is mainly about the relationship between______. A.Americans and the FrenchB.lifestyle and obesity C.children and adultsD.fast food and overweight 34.This text is mainly developed______. A.by contrast B.by space C.by process D.by classification 35.Where does this text probably come from? A.A TV interview. B.A food advertisement. C.A health report. D.A book review. 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分) 21-25BCABD 26-30AADAC 31-35DCBAC 江阴市 第一节 (共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Where Is Spring Break Where is Spring Break going to be? In addition, people have developed cultural patterns and technologies that help them adjust to extremes of temperature and humidity (湿度). In very cold climates, there is a constant danger of developing hypothermia, which is a life-threatening drop in core body temperature to below normal levels. The normal temperature for humans is about 37.0°C. However, differences in persons and even the time of day can cause it to be as much as 6°C higher or lower in healthy individuals. It is also normal for core body temperature to be lower in elderly people. Hypothermia begins to occur when the core body temperature drops to 34.4°C. Below 29.4°C, the body cools more rapidly because its natural temperature regulating system usually fails. The rapid decline in core body temperature is likely to result in death. However, there have been rare cases in which people have been saved after their temperatures had dropped to 13.9-15.6°C. This happened in 1999 to a Swedish woman who was trapped under an ice sheet in freezing water for 80 minutes. She was found unconscious, not breathing, and her heart had stopped beating, yet she was eventually saved despite the fact that her temperature had dropped to 13.7°C. In extremely hot climates or as a result of uncontrollable infections, core body temperatures can rise to equally dangerous levels. This is hyperthermia. Life-threatening hyperthermia typically starts in humans when their temperatures rise to 40.6-41.7°C. Only a few days at this extraordinarily high temperature level is likely to result in the worsening of internal organs and death. 24. What keeps our body temperature stable? A. Culture and technologies. B. The stable earth temperature. C. Our strong determination. D. Some kind of in-body system. 25. What is a Swedish woman mentioned for in the text? A. Proving the strength of life. B. Arguing against some conclusion. C. Showing the limit on humans’ body temperature. D. Introducing an exceptional case about our body temperature. 26. Which of the following may cause hyperthermia? A. Extreme climates. B. Very cold climates. C. Controllable infections. D. Temperatures below 29.4°C. 27. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Humans’ Temperature Regulating System B. Changes of Body Temperatures C. Humans’ Temperature D. An Ice Trap Survivor C Fans of the movie Finding Nemo may remember the terrifying fish that scares Dory and Marlin at the bottom of a trench. But in reality this “monster”, a black seadevil, is only about 9 cm long, which would make it about a third of the size of Dory and potentially smaller than Marlin or Nemo. While this inaccuracy may seem harmless, it could cause problems for future conservation efforts, as people are more likely to support conservation of adorable rather than scary-looking animals. The black seadevil is just one of the mysterious “monsters”. From 2000 to 2010, scientists described about 1 , 200 new species in the Census of Marine Life. While this figure may seem astonishing, a further 5,000 individual dead creatures are in specimen( 标 本 ) jars, waiting to be described. Specimens must be methodically collected, identified, and then the identity of new deep water species must be confirmed. If we call unusual deep-sea animals monsters, then we may harm their conservation as people are unlikely to be connected with them or care about saving them. On the other hand, their rarity clearly makes them popular on social media sites. For other species, this has already resulted in increases in illegal trading for unusual pets. Deep-sea species may potentially become illegally obtained specimens or food. Humans may end up eating these animals of the deep sea to extinction before their species are even known to science. Every habitat on earth is interconnected, and whatever we as humans do has an influence on marine ecosystems. In reality, about 80% of our oxygen is produced by microorganisms(微生物) in the oceans. This makes our oceans both the lungs and lifeblood of our planet and we must all try harder to save them. 28. What can we know about the black seadevil in reality? A. People benefit greatly from the oxygen produced by it. B. Its body size is a big threat to fish like Dory and Nemo. C. Its scary appearance will cause problems for conservation. D. People didn't know much about it when filming Finding Nemo. 29. What does the writer think of the progress of describing new species? A. Acceptable. B. Surprising. C. Unsatisfying. D. Hopeless. 30. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 7 probably refer to? A. Their popularity on social media sites. B. Their rarity among sea creatures. C. Their conservation being harmed. D. D Stan Lee, cofounder of the Marvel Universe(漫威宇宙) and co-creator of many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95. Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name—Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U.S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70year marriage and had two children. In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with super-team the Justice League of America. To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of superheroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut(首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee’s later famous and lasting creations of comicbook superheroes included SpiderMan, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the XMen. Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points, both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry, but changed the way that comic books came together. He also created a cooperative workflow between writers and artists, which became known as the “Marvel Method”. Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 for his innovations that revolutionized American comic books. 32. What do we know about Lee from paragraph 2? A. B Many of us spend part of each day surrounded by strangers, whether on our daily commute(上下 班 往 返 ) , or sitting in park or cafe. But most of them remain just that-strangers.However,new evidence has shown that plucking up(鼓起)the courage to strike up conversation might be good for our health. Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago and Juliana Schroeder from the University of California are behavioral( 行 为 的 ) scientists. They wanted to know whether solitude is a more positive experience than interacting with strangers,or if people misunderstand the consequences of distant social connections. They found that many people feel uncomfortable and frightened talking to others and their research suggested that when we make an initial conversation"we consistently underestimate(低估)how much a new person likes us." It seems we think that all the things could go wrong and why someone wouldn't want to talk with us. Their research involved an experiment with a group of Chicago commuters and found that"every participant in our experiment who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the person sitting next to them was happy to chat."From this and other research, the conclusion is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a positive impact on our well-being.It's true that talking can make you feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health. However,if you're an introvert(性格内向者),the thought of speaking to someone new might make you anxious. But the American research found"both extroverts(性格外向者)and introverts are happier when they are asked to behave in an extroverted manner."So maybe,if you're a loner,it's time to come out of your shell and make some small talk with a stranger-it could be the beginning of a new friendship. 24.What does the underlined word"solitude"in paragraph 2 mean? A.Being calm. B.Being pleasant. C.Being alone. D.Being healthy. 25.Why might we not want to speak to a stranger? A.Because we don't trust a new person. B.Because we can't find a common topic. For all of my twenty-four years,my mom had been supportive.Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me.Now I knew it would have to flow the other way. Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer,she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(药物)with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school."The not-knowing is the worst."she said. The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗)was the harder part.I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one.She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish."Cancer can take my hair,my nails,my health,my very life. But it can't take my smile."Mom said. Mom learned to share her fears with me,and it formed an even deeper bond between us.Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me-worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer.Mom always said,"When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it,you take away some of its power." Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her,I've learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it. 28.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A.There were other ways to treat cancer. B.Knowledge of cancer would be helpful. C.Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer. D Though leaders from the International Olympic Committee(IOC)have announced a first-of-its-kind postponement of the Tokyo Summer Olympics because of the corona virus epidemic, people all over the world are still concerned about its preparations.Officials from the Tokyo Olympic Committee say they are sparing no effort and announce the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021 is going green. The 5,000 medals Japan has made are more special than most. One novel focus of the Tokyo Olympics is to be"sustainable”-to avoid using too many natural resources,so that the games are easy on the environment. As part of this goal, the organizers decided to make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics. Almost all electronics are made with small amounts of"precious metals",like gold and silver. But collecting enough of these metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge. That's because the amount of metal in each device is tiny.It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just l kilogram of gold. Beginning in April 2017,the organizers placed collection boxes around the country, and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices.Soon people began to respond to the initiative(倡导), turning in smart phones, digital cameras, handheld games, and laptops. At first, collection went slowly, but soon more and more areas began to take part.By the end,1,621 local governments had helped out with the collection process. Then came the job of breaking those devices down into smaller pieces. After eing taken apart and sorted, the small electronics were smelted(熔炼)to get all the gold, silver, and bronze elements. This is a tricky job, which calls for careful attention and good skill. It's also dangerous, because some of the metals and other things aren't safe for people to touch or breathe. By the end of March,2019,the organizers had hit their targets of getting enough metal for the medals. They had collected around 32 kilograms of gold,4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. And now all the 5,000 medals are available for the would-be winners. 32.What can we know about the Tokyo Olympics medals? A.They are hugely valuable. B.They are of high quality. C.They are made from e-waste. D.They are designed uniquely. 33.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us? A.The difficulty of making the medals. B.The initiative to recycle used smart phones. C.The classification of the collected devices. D.The process of collecting old electronics. 34.The underlined word"tricky"in Paragraph 5 means" A.creative B.demanding C.well-paid D.time-consuming 35.What's the purpose of Tokyo's way of making the medals? A.To advocate sustainable use of resources. B.To promote the spirit of Olympic Games. C.To introduce a new technique to make medals. D.To show the gravity of environmental damage. 21-23 DBC 24-27 CDAB 28-31 DCBC 32-35 CDBA A 第 23 题 C 定位到文章第五段 “All about History takes you on a journey across the centuries, and leaves in all the drama and entertainment our attractive past has to offer.”可知 All about History 讲述 了横跨多个世纪的历史故事,所以此题 C 选项正确。A 项,结合第四段“including powerful interviews with soldiers ”可知指的是 History of War。B 项,比较四本杂志的售价可知最便宜的是 How It Works 。D 项,结合第二段“all the vital answers to questions you didn't even realize you had.”可知指 的是 How It Works 。所以本题选 C。 B 篇 第 24 题 C 定位到原文第二段第二句“than”与“or”,可知“solitude”与“interacting with strangers”与 陌生人交流是比较关系,与“distant social connections”疏远的社会关系是近义关系,可知“being alone” 独自一人符合题意。所以本题选 C。 第 25 题 D 定位到原文第二段第三句“when we make an initial conversation "we consistently underestimate how much a new person likes us.” 第 26 题 A 结合原文最后一句“it's time to come out of your shell and make some small talk with a stranger — it could be the beginning of a new friendship.” 第 31 题 最后一段最后一句...but I do get to choose how I face it. D 篇 第 32 题 定位到第二段最后一句...make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics. 第 34 题 结合下文的...which calls for careful attention and good skill. 第 35 题 回到第二段第一句...to avoid using too many natural resources, so that the games are easy on the environment. 故选 A。 A Hiking Trails(路线)for Families on Long Island Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park,Oyster Bay INFO:9 a.m.to 5 p.m.daily;$8 per carload on weekends only "Nearly half the 409 acres of the former estate of the W.R.Coe family and current state park arboretum(植物园)property is woodland that includes nature walks and a greenhouse,” confirmed by Brian Nearing,an officer at New York State Parks.Expect to see lots of wildlife, from foxes and squirrels to birds of prey, such as red-tailed hawks and great horned owls,a delight for kids. B In the morning, when we arrived on foot at Dumont d’Urville, the French scientific base on the Adelie Coast of Est Antarctica,we had to break up a thin layer of ice that had formed over the hole we had drilled the day before. The hole went right through the 10-foot-thick ice-berg. It was just wide enough for a man,and below it lay the sea.We had never tried to dive through such a small opening.I went first.Pushing and pulling with hands, knees, heels.and the tips of my swim fins,I moved through the hole. The bottom surface of the sea ice is a thick mixture of floating ice blocks, and my fall had set them in motion.I hey were meeting on the hole as if it had been an upside-down drain.By the time I pushed one arm into the icy blocks,it was three feet thick.Grabbing the safety rope,I was scared and pulled myself up inch by inch, but my shoulders got stuck.Suddenly I was astonished by a sharp blow to the head:Cedric Gentil, one of my dive buddies, was trying to dig me out,and his spade(锹)had struck my skull. Finally a hand grabbed mine and dragged me into the air.Today's dive was over-but it was only one of 32. I've come here with another photographer,Vincent Munier,at the invitation of filmmaker Luc Jacquet, who's working on a sequel(续集)to his 2005 accomplishment,March of the Penguins. While Jacquet films emperor penguins and Munier photographs them,my team will document life under the sea ice. I've worked for decades as a deep-diving photographer,at first in the Mediterranean Sea, where I learned to dive 30 years ago.Later,a passion for new mysteries took me elsewhere. I've dived to 400 feet off South Africa to photograph rare coelacanths(a large fish),and for 24 straight hours off Fakarava,in French Polynesia,to witness the pairing of 17,000 groupers.but this exploration to Antarctica is unlike any other. Here we'll be diving deeper than anyone has dived before under Antarctic ice-and the conditions will be beyond harsh. 24.Why was the layer of ice the author chose thin? A.Because it was formed more recently. D.Because it was near their research base. Because the water there was shallower. Because the temperature there was higher. 25"hat frightened the author when he wanted to return to the surface? A.The safety rope was missing. B.Floating ice blocks were about to fill the hole. C.An unknown creature attacked him D.His workmate hit his head 26.Why did the author dive to the Antarctica? A.To record his travel in the sea B.To conduct a research under the sea. C.To photograph the pairing of penguins. D.To shoot the sea-born life for Jacquet. 27.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A.Introduce his achievements. B.Show his special interest in diving. C.Stress that the exploration to Antarctica was unique. D.Add some scientific background information. C You go to the coffee shop and take your coffee to go.You enjoy your drink, and then throw the paper cup in the garbage.Or do you put it in the recycling? It's confusing.A lot of us-people everywhere-are using to-go cups these days."A recent report said that there are 600 billion cups-billion with a"b' - that are produced and sold globally on an annual basis. So that's a lot,"says Christy Slay with The Sustainability Consortium.Starbucks alone says it contributes 1 percent of those disposable(一次性的)cups:That's an estimated 6 billion cups a year. To help reduce those numbers,Starbucks and McDonald's are launching a three-year project to build a better cup:one that's both fully recyclable and compostable(可用作堆肥的)。Here's the big problem with the paper ones you get there and in other coffee shops."They look like paper, but they actually have a thin layer of plastic on the inside,"Slay says. That plastic coating keeps the cups from leaking. The problem is that it also makes the cups really hard to recycle, and only a few facilities in the world can do it. A few companies have already rolled out compostable coffee cups. But Dylan de Thomas with The Recycling Partnership says there is a problem with those cups, too."Typically they're compostable in industrial settings,so hot your backyard compost that you and I might have, but at fairly technically advanced composting facilities."There aren't a lot of those facilities around, either. So why exactly,in the 21st century, is it so hard to produce a better paper cup?"It's not necessarily very technically hard, though there are technical problems to overcome to make something recyclable and compostable, says Bridget Croke with Closed Loop Partners,a firm working to build what they call a circular economy. It’s a fancy way of talking about turning waste into value.Almost anything is technically recyclable,Croke says."But recycling is a business, and if materials can't move through the recycling system and be turned into a product that has value, they're not functionally recyclable." 28.What are people puzzled at about the paper cup? A.How to deal with the used one. B.Why people reject it carelessly. C.What makes it hard to compost. D.Why Starbucks uses so many cups. 29.How does the plastic layer of the paper cup function? A.It helps make the cup more portable. B.It makes the cup easily recyclable. C.It prevents the water from escaping. D.It promotes the extended use of the cup. 30.What does Bridget Croke think of recycling the cup? A.Its future is promising. B.It is not a profitable business. C.Its technical problems are unsolvable. D.A more recyclable cup will be put into the market. 31.What can be the best title for the text? A.How can we design a better paper cup? B.Why is it so hard to recycle paper cups? C.What can we do to lessen the need of paper cups? D.What damage do paper cups cause to our environment! D How can we possibly cope with the large amount of information about virus spread, stock market nosedives, canceled plans and uncertainty about the future? Some people are buried in the fear, anxiety and sadness, checking news sites and social media constantly.Others try to suppress it all and ignore the outside world(I'm guessing that Instagram has never seen so much traffic). There's a third option, though.Rather than fully involving in the negative or ignoring it, we can do our best to experience joy alongside everything else that is sad in the world. In fact, research that I and others have conducted suggests that allowing the two different emotions to coexist may actually benefit us in the long run. Dr.Jeff Larsen and his colleagues coined something known as the"coactivation model of mixed emotions",and the basic idea is that we may be able to deal with, and learn from negative emotions like sadness if we experience them concurrently with positive emotions like joy at the same time. Here, positive emotions provide a psychological buffer(缓冲),making it easier for people to deal with the things they don't want to face. The comedian Mitch Hedberg proposed an analogy that captures this essence quite well, noting that“it would be cool if you could eat a carrot with an onion ring and they would travel down to your stomach. Then they would get there, and the carrot would say,'It's cool,he's with me .’ Applied to our emotional lives,we could do a better job in digesting, processing gaining insight into the negative events in our lives if we could do so alongside the positive. Several years ago,my partner Jon Adler and I set out to test this exact idea.Specifically, we looked at sample of adult volunteers who signed up or weekly mental health therapy sessions.Between each week, they reported the feelings they were having and also took a few questionnaires that were meant to assess their overall health. This design allowed us to examine how different emotional experiences would impact mental health in a longitudinal fashion, over the course of 12 weeks. 32.What does the author recommend people to do with a flood of bad news? A.Take no notice of it at all. B.Make better plans to fight against it. C.Take in all of the negative emotions. D.Involve in the negative and enjoy happiness as well. 33.Which of the following may Jeff Larsen agree with? A.Mixed emotions remain to be proved. B.The negative emotion is easy to deal with. C.The positive emotion makes it easier for people to succeed. D.Mixed emotions allow people to handle the negative better. 34.What does the underlined word"analogy" in paragraph 4 mean? A.Exhibition. B.Promotion. C.Similarity. D.Requirement. H.A 35.Why were lots of questions asked during the research? A.To measure the volunteers health on the whole. B The universe likes to be shy about its age,but astronomers believe they have a pretty good idea of the range.Currently, the most widely accepted age for the universe is around 13.8 billion years, but determining the age of...well,everything,is no easy feat(功绩).Now.new studies have investigated the question using different methods-and they've come up with two different answers, separated by more than a billion years. Because the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace, the further away an object is,the faster it appears to be moving away from us.This is expressed as the Hubble constant ( 哈 勃 常 数 ) , and it's a key factor in figuring out the age of the universe. After all.if we can determine how fast moving away from us,we can rewind that process to its beginning-the Big Bang.Researchers from the University of Oregon set out to map the distance to dozens of galaxies The team calculated that the universe is only 12.6 billion years old-that,you might notice is much younger than the 13.8 years usually stated. In the second study, the method of figuring out the age of the universe is by mapping the oldest light we can detect. We are restoring the' baby photo' of the universe to its original condition, removing the wear and tear of time and space that distorted(扭曲)the image, says Neelima Sehgal, co-author on the study.Only by seeing this sharper baby photo or image of the universe can we more fully understand how our universe was born."In doing so, the researcher determined that the universe is 13.8 billion years old-in agreement with the accepted age. The real problem though,is that the studies disagree so wildly with each other, to the tune of a billion years. But they are not the only ones-the battle lines are commonly drawn by the methods used. Obviously.more research is heeded to determine where the truth lies. 24.What do we know about the universe from the first two paragraphs? A.It doesn't exist long. B.It becomes larger. C.It runs away. D.It causes the Big Bang. 25.What makes the researchers in the first study think the universe is much younger? A.The speed of moving objects. B.The number of galaxies. C.The process of the universe evolution. D.The distance to other objects. 26.How does Neelima Sehgal explain their method in the second study? A.By referring to a similar thing. B.By using hard scientific data. C.By introducing a new concept. D.By quoting an expert's words. 27.Which can be a suitable title for the text? A.Whose method is better? B.Which result can you believe? C.How old is the universe? D.Why is the universe so old? C Did you know that the average child has heard the word"no”over 20,000 times before they turn the age of three?Ironically,it is also around this time that children begin to develop enough personal character to refuse to obey. The“terrible twos"are categorized by a lack of understanding.Somewhere between three and four, children begin to acquire the skills to reason. It is during this time they watch how other children and adults reason. If we're not careful, the children will watch us model a world of "NOs”。 By the time a person turns eighteen, how many times have they been told no?I haven't found any studies that even attempted to track this statistic, but I'm sure if the number is 20,000 by three, then at eighteen that number has multiplied. You can do the math. Anyway,I think I know why we say no.We say no to protect. We say no to direct. We say no to stop potential confusion. However,do we sometimes say no just for the sake of saying no?Do we say no because we have internalized(内在化)all of the"NOs"we've heard over the years and we feel it is finally our time to say no to someone else? The internalized no can damage the growth process of dreams in infancy as quickly as it can weaken a three-year-old.And we wonder why we run into people with big,un-accomplished dreams who have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. They have to take on the 20,000 NOs.However, the thing that keeps them going is the possibility of the power of ONE YES!Just as it only takes one book to make a writer a Pulitzer Prize Winner,it only takes one word to change the course of your day. That word is YES! 28.What do we know about two- year- olds? A.They understand well. B.They often say no to others. C.They think logically. D.They don't do all they're told. 29.What effect does saying no have on children? A.They lose all their dreams. B.They aren't easy to succeed. C.They don't make mistakes. D.They never say yes to others. 30.Which word best describes the author's attitude to a world of"NOs"? A.Tolerant. B.Disapproving. C.Favourable. D.Carefree. 31.What is the text? A.A how-to guide. B.A survey report. C.An opinion essay. D.A short story. D I'm Jeff Logan, president of Logan Luxury Theaters Corporation.I'm very sorry to tell you many cinemas are at risk of closing permanently(永久)。That's something we would hate to see happen Watching the newest box office movie and eating a big bucket of popcorn is an experience that many of us have enjoyed for a very long time.We all have fond memories of going to a theater of our first dates or the first movie we saw with our children.A movie theater is so important to the fabric of the local community. It's a place where we all gather,no matter what our interests, and no matter what ages, young and old, rich and poor. But how much longer will classic theaters remain open?Just like other industries, movie theaters have been hit hard by the pandemic( 流 行 病 ) and are going dark. The entire industry is being controlled by the pandemic, because the studios don't want to release their new movies until all the theaters can be open.As we all know, the theaters can't do well and can't get back to full 7-day a week at full speed operation without new movies to play. Recently, the Logan Luxury 5 Cinema in Mitchell reopened for the weekends. However, like many theaters,it is only operating at about 10 percent capacity.Since opening, several new safety measures have been put in place.Block off every other row.People are asked to leave three seats between them and the next group.Staff spray the theater with disinfectant( 消 毒 剂 ) after every show. And sanitizer stations can be found throughout the theater. Even so,some people still aren't comfortable going to a movie theater yet.I fully understand that. Anyhow,I just hope we must do something else to help out our local theaters, like taking part in a new national proposal called"Save Your Cinema." 32.What does the underlined word"fabric"in paragraph 4 refer to? A.Typical feature. B.Basic structure. C.Public support. D.Common vision. 33.Why are the film studios unwilling to release the new movies? A.Cinemas don't operate normally. B.New movies aren't welcomed. C.People don't like going to cinema. D.Many cinemas go out of business. 34.What can we infer about the Logan Luxury 5 Cinema after its reopening? A.It makes a lot of money. B.It does well in disease prevention. C.It receives a large audience every day. D.It offers more enjoyable experience. 35.What is the purpose of this text? A.To share the good old days. B.To explain a social problem. C.To recommend a theater. D.To ask for people's help. 21-23 ADD 24-27 BCAC 28-31 DBBC 32-35 BABC A (错误原因 B:不是 all the time C:stay a few night 无中生有 D:由 page 3 第一行黑体字得无购物要求)。 B 篇 第 24 题 B 由题干要求定位开头两段,由第二段第一句中 expanding at an accelerating speed 同义替 换得 becomes larger。 Researchers from ... set out to map the distance to dozens of galaxies. The team calculated that the universe is only 12.6 billion years old. 这里 D 选项的 other objects 与原文的 dozens of galaxies 同义替换。 由 currently,….,separated by more than a billion year. C 篇 第 28 题 D 定位到第一段 it is also around this time that children begin to develop enough personal character to refuse to obey. The internalized no can damage the growth of dreams in fancy as quickly as it can weaken a three-year-old. And we wonder why we run into people with big, unaccomplished dreams who have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. 第 31 题 C 全文以作者观点为导向表达了作者眼中,对说不的看法,由此可见是一篇 opinion essay 表明个人意见的论文 D 篇 第 32 题 B fabric 织物,可以联想到重要的组成部分,再联系上下文,电影院是一个大众都喜欢 去的娱乐场所,在每个社区里都是一个重要的组成部分,basic structure,基础组成(the fabric of sth the structure or parts especially of a social unit or a building) 第 33 题 A 定位到第三段,the studios don’t want to release their new movies until all the theaters can be open. I just hope we must do something else to help out our local theaters, like taking part in a new national proposal called “Save You Cinema”,作者通过对读者的期待呼吁大家加 入这个行动来为电影行业带来帮助。
