Learn about them all in the below. Attire(服装) and Flowers at College of Charleston You fashionista will love this one. During the December ceremony, women wear black dresses and men wear black tuxedos ( 无 尾 礼 服 ). During the May ceremony, women wear white dresses and men wear summer tuxedos. It’s also been a tradition since the 1930s to carry flowers onto the stage:women carry bouquets of six red roses in a red bow and men wear a single red rose boutonniere(胸花). So classy! Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College This all-women’s college tradition was originally held on May Day, but it’s now held in April. The purpose was to allow students to essentially leave all their worries behind and just participate in some fun games outdoors. Back in the day, it was said that the winner of the hoop rolling race was the first to be married, and in the 1980s she would be the first to be a CEO. Nowadays, the winner would be the first to achieve her own happiness...that is, after being thrown into Lake Waban by all her classmates. Fabric and Green Grad Recycling Program at the University of New Hampshire You’ll absolutely love this tradition. UNH’s vendor provides wrinkleresistant caps and gowns made of recycled plastic bottles. Graduates then have the opportunity to donate their gowns to be cleaned and reused. Graduates are still able to keep their caps and tassels as keepsakes, all while helping to save the environment. 21. If you want to participate in the December ceremony, you can choose ________. A. College of Charleston B. Wellesley College C. University of New Hampshire D. Oxford University 22. Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College is aimed at enabling the students to ________. A. be a CEO    B. have fun C. achieve happiness D. be married 23. What are UNH’s caps and gowns made of? A. Flowers. B. Silk and cotton. C. Leather. D. Recycled plastic bottles. B It’s thought that around 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in our oceans. Both mammals and fish benefit from the clean ocean. It is reported that more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and nearly half of the plastic we produce is singleuse only. This shoe brand, however, is riding the wave of change and is on a mission to help clean up our waters and rid the sea of plastic bottles that can take up to 400 years to break down. Vivobarefoot’s newest footwear uses recycled plastic materials and has created an education program that spreads awareness about how harmful plastic is for sea life. Every pair of shoes is made up of 17 plastic water bottles taken from the ocean and turned into a sustainable, comfortable pair of shoes, which are also healthy for your feet. And while not everyone can take part in ocean cleanups, choosing little ways we can give back to our planet goes a long way. Vivobarefoot’s new products include a variety of highperformance styles such as casual sneakers, running shoes, and hiking boots. The brand hopes that its latest initiative(新方案) will help lessen the indifference to pollution and how harmful it is for all living beings. In the future, Vivobarefoot hopes to increase their production of shoes created from sustainable materials, and thankfully, it is now one of many brands that aim to increase environmentalism and educate communities on how global warming affects everyone. This year, they’ll add more recyclable and traceable materials into more than half of their production line, and they have plenty of creative developments in the works as well. The shoes also have a health benefit. Based on the concept that wider, minimally designed shoes enable our foot to function at maximum potential, wearers also experience better balance and sensory input. 24. How does the author make his point convincing? A. By listing figures. B. By telling a story. C. By giving examples. D. By making classification. 25. What is Vivobarefoot doing to help with the marine creatures? A. Donating money to buy food for them. B. Keeping the ocean free from plastic bottles. C. Producing more shoes from sustainable materials. D. Raising public awareness of recycling and reuse. 26. What is probably Vivobarefoot’s operation philosophy? A. Customerfocused. B. Serviceoriented. C. Moneysaving. D. Environmentallyfriendly. 27. What can we learn from the text? A. Vivobarefoot’s new products haven’t been released. B. Vivobarefoot is the most popular shoe brand in the world. C. Vivobarefoot cares about not only its business but also public services. D. Vivobarefoot is the first company to find the new function of waste materials. C It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called Head Start was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into preschool institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Head Start” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment. To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The fouryear study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socioeconomic statuses, ages and family structures. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development. At three, the children involved in the Missouri program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds or family structures. The one factor that was found to affect the child’s development was the poor quality of parentchild interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families. The Missouri program compares quite distinctly with the Head Start program. Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness. 28. What caused the failure of the “Head Start” program? A. The large number of poor families. B. The disapproval from children. C. The long period of time. D. The late start of the program. 29. What do we know about the “Missouri” program? A. It focused on the children’s first school teachers. B. It helped the children return to the same home. C. It made the children improved in many aspects. D. It gave the parents advice on their development. 30. According to the passage, what is likely to influence children’s performance? A. The number of family members. B. The parentchild communication. C. The intelligence of their parents. D. The teacherstudent relationship. 31. How does the author develop the passage? A. By making definitions. B. By making comparisons. C. By presenting ideas. D. By drawing conclusions. D Classifying things is critical for our daily lives. For example, we have to detect spam mail ( 垃 圾 邮 件 ), false political news. When we use AI, such tasks are based on “classification technology” in machine learning—having the computer learn, using the boundary separating positive and negative data. For example, “positive” data would be photos including a happy face, and “negative” data photos that include a sad face. Once a classification boundary is learned, the computer can determine whether certain data are positive or negative. However, the difficulty with this technology is that it requires both positive and negative data for the learning process, and negative data are not available in many cases. For instance, when a retailer (零售商) is trying to predict who will make a purchase, they can easily find data on customers who have purchased from them (positive data), but it is basically impossible to obtain data on customers who have never purchased from them (negative data), since they do not have access to their competitors’ data. According to lead author Takashi Ishida from RIKEN AIP, “Previous classification methods could not cope with the situation where negative data were not available, but we have made it possible for computers to learn with only positive data, as long as we have a confidence score for our positive data, constructed from information such as buying intention or the active rate of app users. Using our new method, we can let computers learn a classifier only from positive data equipped with confidence.” According to Ishida, “This discovery could expand the range of applications where classification technology can be used. Even in fields where machine learning has been actively used, our classification technology could be used in new situations where only positive data can be gathered due to data regulation or business constraints(限制). In the near future, we hope to put our technology to use in various research fields, such as natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and bio-informatics.” 32. How can the computer distinguish the positive data from the negative data? A. By learning the classification boundary. B. By updating the data collected regularly. C. By separating happy faces and sad ones. D. By introducing classification technology. 33. Why is the example mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. To prove how important the positive data are. B. To confirm that data on customers are complete. C. To argue that retailers get their competitors’ data. D. To explain why negative data are hard to acquire. 34. What do the underlined words “new method” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Analyzing buying intention. B. Building a confidence score. C. Assessing the active rate of app users. D. Equipping the computer with confidence. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The History of Classification Technology B. Smarter AI: Machine Learning Without Negative Data C. Bigger Data: Computers Assisting Language Processing D.
