Wilson, 28 years old, had just gotten off the cable car (索道缆车) at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Keystone, Colorado, along with his friends Billy Simmons and Hans Mueller. Their friend Richard had been on the cable car ahead of them, but when the men reached the top of the lift, he had disappeared. The men walked toward the source of the scream and found skiers stopped on the slope, pointing to the cable car. And then the friends screamed too. “Oh, Richard!” yelled Mueller. When Richard had tried to jump off the cable car, his backpack had been caught in the chair, which then dragged him back down the hill. In the process, the backpack belt twisted around his neck, making him breathless. Now Richard’s body was swinging four feet above the snow. The cable car operator had quickly stopped it, and the friends kicked off their skis and ran toward the scene. They made a human pyramid to try to reach Richard, but the unconscious man was too far off the ground. With the clock ticking, Wilson ran to the ladder of a nearby lift tower. Scared skiers watched as he struggled the 25 feet. After he reached the top, Wilson’s first challenge was to climb onto the two-inch steel cable that held the chairs. He handled the balance and height bravely, but he knew he could not walk on the cable. Therefore, he calmed down and sat over it and then used his hands to pull himself to Richard quickly. Wilson’s greatest fear wasn’t that he’d fall, but that he wouldn’t reach Richard. “This was life or death,” he said. When he reached Richard’s chair, Wilson swung a leg over the cable and attempted to drop down onto it. But as he did that, his jacket caught on the movable footrest, which was in the up position. The footrest began to slide down, with Wilson attached. But before that could happen, he managed to free himself and reached Richard. Fortunately, the ski patrol (巡查) had gathered below and performed emergency treatment on Richard, who had been hanging for about five minutes, then skied him down to an ambulance. That night, Richard called from the hospital to express his thanks to Wilson, his other friends and the workers at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. 34. What happened to Richard when he tried to jump off the cable car?A. He was sick and became unconscious. B. He left his skis which stopped the cable car. C. He was too afraid to move forward in the cable car. D. He was caught by the neck, hanging down the cable. 35. How did Richard survive? A. People worked together and saved him. B. Wilson climbed on the cable and saved him. C. The ski patrol got him down and treated him. D. Skiers treated him and carried him to the hospital. 36. The author wrote the fourth paragraph to show that _______. A. the rescue process was dangerous B. something was wrong with the cable car C. Wilson could manage the process very well D. the operator of the cable car ignored his duty 37. The story at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area mainly tells us ______. A. it is very dangerous to go skiing B. he that climbs high often falls heavily C. bravery and calm can help you make a difference D. a person with a great talent always has great will-power C Running on Empty For almost a century, scientists have assumed, tiredness—or exhaustion—in athletes originates(起源于) in the muscles. Precise explanations have varied, but all have been based on the “Limitations Theory”. In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful by- products(副产品). In the past few years, however, Timothy Noakes from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, has examined this standard theory. Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion. When the brain decides it’s time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. This “Central Governor” theory remains controversial, but it does explain many puzzling aspects of athletic performance. A recent discovery that Noakes calls the “lactic acid paradox” made him start researching this area seriously. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. But when research subjects exercise in certain conditions created artificially, they become tired even though lactic acid levels remain low. Nor has the oxygen content of their blood fallen too low for them to keep going. Obviously, something else was making them tire before they hit either of these physiological limits. Noakes conducted an experiment with seven cyclists. It has long been known that during exercise, the body never uses 100% of the available muscle fibres(纤维). The amount used varies, but in some tasks such as this cycling test the body calls on about 30%. His team found that as tiredness set in, the electrical activity in cyclist’s legs declined—even when they were making a great effort to cycle as fast as they could. To Noakes, this was strong evidence that the old theory was wrong. “The cyclists may have felt completely exhausted,” he says, “but their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibres.” This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness. 38. Which of the following is supported by “the Limitations Theory”? A. Tiredness is caused by signals from brain. B. Athletes feel tired when they use up all their energy. C. The body uses 100% of the muscle fibres in exercise.D. Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low. 39. Noakes has found out that ___________. A. muscle fibres control athletes’ movements B. Lactic acid levels remain high in cycling test C. mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness D. different exercises use different amount of muscle fibres 40. It is likely that both theories accept that ___________. A. lactic acid is produced in muscles during exercise B. the oxygen content in blood may rise after sports C. tiredness is a harmful by-product of exercise D. the energy in human bodies can be balanced 41. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The description of a new test. B. The explanation of the theory. C. The puzzling evidence of a study. D. The whole process of the research. D Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words. Time communicates in many ways. Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a special meaning to the event. It is not customary to telephone someone every early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the United States, guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings often arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness(准时) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S., no one would think of keeping a business partner waiting for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is five minutes late is expected to make a short apology. This way of treating time is quite different from that of several other cultures. This helps to explain the unfortunate experience of a certain agriculturist from the United States, assigned to duty in another country. After a long delay, the agriculturist was finally agreed an appointment with the Minister of Agriculture. Arriving a little before the appointed hour, the agriculturist waited. The hour came and passed. At this point he suggested to the secretary that perhaps the minister did not know he was waiting in the outer office. This gave him the feeling of having done something to solve the problem, but he had not. Twenty minutes passed, then thirty, then forty-five. To an American, that is the beginning of the “insult period”. No matter what is said in apology, there is little that can remove the damage done by an hour’s wait in an outer office. Yet in the country where this story took place, a forty-five-minute waiting period was not unusual. In the West, particularly in the United States, people tend to think of time as something fixed in nature. As a rule, Americans think of time as a road stretching into the future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections, which are to be kept separate— “one thing at a time”. People who cannot plan events are not highly regarded. Thus, an American may feel angry when he has made an appointment with someone and then finds a lot of other things happening at the same time. Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind. 42. According to the passage, an announcement broadcast during class must be very important because ________. A. it is a customary time to make. B. it makes everyone surprised.C. it requires immediate attention. D. it speaks more plainly than words. 43 The author mentions an agriculturist’s experience in order to show ________. A. the value of promptness for Americans. B. the cultural differences in treating time. C. the bad manners of the Minister of Agriculture. D. the importance of time in different parts of the day. 44. The underlined word “insult” in Paragraph5 probably means ________. A. boring. B. patient. C. shameful. D. hopeless. 45. We can learn from the passage that people will understand better if ________. A. they are concerned with the value of time. B. they know how to communicate with each other. C. they escape dealing with many things at one appointed time. D. they keep in mind that different cultures treat time differently. We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that may actually be true. A study of more than 50,000 adults aged 30 and older found that breakfast eaters were more likely to lose weight than those who didn’t eat a morning meal. To have a satisfying and nutritious breakfast, these tips will help you really rise and shine: Eat even if you’re not hungry. Although you might not feel like eating first thing in the morning, it’s a good idea to get something into your system. Eating within 90 minutes of waking up will jump- start your body and keep you from getting hungry later. ___46___ Go boring. Varying what you eat is a good idea in theory. ___47___A 2014 British study found that people who allowed their breakfast calories to rise and fall (as measured by a five-day diet diary) had larger waists than folks who kept their morning calorie intake constant, no matter how much they ate the rest of the day. Go big. There’s an old saying that advises “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a beggar.” It’s worth following. According to a study of 93 overweight women, those who ate a balanced 700-calorie breakfast over a 12-week period lowered their blood sugar and blood pressure two times more than people who ate a 200- calorie meal. ___48___ Always pick a protein. A review of recent studies in the health journal Advances in Nutrition found the function of protein. ___49___Shapiro recommends eggs, nut butter, or cheese (which is generally a little lower in sugar than yogurt) to give your breakfast a protein boost. Embrace fat. Actually, fat isn’t the main enemy to weight loss success—sugar is. Fat is digested slowly by the body and helps decrease the rate at which we digest and break down carbohydrates ___50___So you need some fat (at least 1 to 2 percent) to help your body absorb those nutrients more efficiently. A. It can also dissolve and break down vitamins A and D. B. Just a banana will do the trick. C. A variety of foods are mouth-watering and full of nutrition. D. The breakfast needs to be high in protein. E. But you’d better stick with the same old menu for your weight.F. They also lost an average of 19.2 pounds. In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful by-products(副产品)可知极限理论认为人们会感到疲倦时因 为到达了肌肉的极限。B. Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. C. mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness(精神过程控制疲倦的症状)符合以上 说法,故选C项。 40. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion. When the brain decides it’s time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. A. lactic acid is produced in muscles during exercise(运动时肌肉离会产生lactic acid)符合以上推测,故选A项。 41. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. The puzzling evidence of a study.(一 个研究令人费解的证据)可以作为本段主旨,故选C项。 D 【答案】42. C 43. B 44. C 45. 由第二段“If you telephone him early in the day, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance ”可知, 如果你在一天的早些时候给他打电话,打电话的时间表明这件事很重要,需要立即处理。 由第五段“This way of treating time is quite different from that of several other cultures”可知, 这种对待时间的方式不同于其他几种文化。 由第五段“This gave him the feeling of having done something to solve the problem, but he had not. Twenty minutes passed, then thirty, then forty-five. To an American, that is the beginning of the “insult period”. No matter what is said in apology, there is little that can remove the damage done by an hour’s wait in an outer office”可知,这给了他一种已经解决了问题的感觉,但他没有。 由最后段“Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind”可知,由于时间的意 义根据文化的不同而不同,交流就常常会有障碍。
