Before my daughter, Evelyn, was born, 1 eagerly expected her first year of life. I imagined
celebrating every milestone — bonding with her as a newborn, seeing her smile for the first time,
hearing her say her first word. I didn’t think of feeding tubes, long hospital stays or an organ
transplant (移植).For Evelyn, the first year included all and more.
Evelyn came into this world at just 34 weeks, weighing less than 3 pounds. Genetic testing
revealed she had Alagille syndrome，a genetic disorder that can damage the liver(肝脏），heart and
other organs. Soon, we received the news that baby Evelyn needed a liver transplant. Our family
moved nearer to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh so that we were closer if a liver was
available for Evelyn.
When Evelyn was added to the organ donation wait list, it was under the liver allocation policy
in place at that time, which was map-based. This policy lacks any special consideration for
transplant candidates. We were told it would likely take three months. Just then, a new policy for
liver allocation was tried out. Under the new system, the sickest child patients get first priority(优先).
The new policy was only in effect for a little over a week. But in that period, Evelyn received her
liver transplant. Had it been just one week earlier or later, we would not have received the call.
As Evelyn recovers from her transplant, we are grateful for the change. I am also sad, because
the new policy was short-lived. That means another mom like me might not receive that phone call
with good news.
Other children should have the same opportunity as Evelyn to live healthy, happy lives. When it
comes to liver transplant policy, we can and must do better for children.

I've had many wonderful holidays, but my favorite memory is that of a few summer weeks
spent in Italy when I was about 13.My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment, and we all went
together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well. It was the first
time abroad for me and it was a vacation that broadened my perspective, taught me a lot, and helped
shape a bit of who I am today.
Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy, we stayed mostly in a little town
where some friends of my parents lived. Nothing helped me understand Italian culture better than my
stay in this picturesque, almost magical town that many haven't even heard of.
Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy, I, quite a shallow girl, also discovered my passion for
music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably stay forever. My parents' friends had a
son, Ricardo, who was a pianist. Dad had repeatedly but unsuccessfully tried to make me study an
instrument and stick to it. However, when I heard Ricardo play, I instantly fell in love with music
and felt a great desire to learn it. Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, a silly,
playful little tune that I still know by heart.
We took a short trip to the Italian Alps at some point. I had never seen such majestic beauty
before! The snow & shy; covered peaks, the intimidating rocks, the fresh, harsh air — what an
experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although this was a
popular touristic area, the region was incredibly clean, still “natural”, with places that seemed to
never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen that I was learned what a real treasure
nature is and how important it is to protect it.

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have life
spans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that
elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing. To be precise, they found
20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans,
only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to
DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to
form deadly tumors
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body
sizes in many animals ,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell
has the same chance of becoming cancerous( 癌 变 的 ), large creatures with a long lifespan like
whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But
across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and
later named “Peto’s paradox( 悖 论 )”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using
protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s
way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same
cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new
treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at
the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal
with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”

Tutors would come to the house to do this. Now, the Victorian upper classes have the reputation of being quite cruel; but this wasn’t always the case. They were also quite generous. Some schools
