第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)
第一节 (共 10 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 25 分) 3
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I was once invited to visit a witch doctor (巫医) in Zimbabwe. The friend who took
me to visit the witch doctor was called Pleasure. When I asked Pleasure why he was
going to the witch doctor, he rubbed his stomach and said, “I have been sick for three
weeks.”
Pleasure had already visited the clinic 60 kilometers away to see the “modern”
doctors, but he was still feeling ill and now seeking a traditional treatment. Knowing
that foreigners liked to experience tribal customs, Pleasure had thoughtfully invited me
to visit the witch doctor with him.
Eventually we arrived and were led into a tiny hut where the dread-locked (有发
辫的) witch doctor awaited us, wearing a smart shirt, a pink scarf, a blue blanket and a
strange smile. He sat down on the dirt floor, back and legs straight, ankles crossed. The
smell of smoke filled the air, and dust lay on an array of bottles and jars behind him.
Then the consultation began. The witch doctor and Pleasure talked to each other in
Shona with low, urgent voices, while I watched and listened, but understood nothing.
Then the witch doctor carefully unwrapped a paper parcel and took out some small
bones. He cupped them in his hands, shook them and dropped them deliberately. And
then he shook his head and mumbled (咕哝) softly to himself.
Our meeting ended abruptly as the witch doctor waved goodbye. I was curious
about what treatment the witch doctor had given to Pleasure. So I asked Pleasure. For
Shona people, it’s rude to look someone straight in the eye but, if Pleasure had not been
Zimbabwean, I’m sure he would have looked right at me as he showed the witch
doctor’s advice, “He told me to keep taking the pills they gave me at the clinic.”
21. Why did the author visit the witch doctor with Pleasure?
A. He had an upset stomach himself.
B. He was interested in local customs.
C. He had been admiring the witch doctor.
D. He had to support Pleasure on the trip.
22. What did the author think about the witch doctor?
A. Greedy. B. Friendly. C. Humorous. D. Mysterious.
23. What can we learn from the text?
A. The author could understand the local culture.
B. The author learned a lot from the experience.
C. They might be fooled by the witch doctor.
D. It was useful to go to the witch doctor.
B
Protecting wildlife and sensitive natural areas is hard enough as it is, and it’s not
helping that every tourist wants to post a selfie (自拍) with a koala bear or dolphin.
Now Instagram is making it harder to find such content. If you search for hashtags (主
题标签) associated with pictures that could harm wildlife or the environment, it will
post a warning before letting you continue.
Now, if you enter an associated word, the app will throw a flag saying “Protect
Wildlife on Instagram”, adding that “you are searching for a hashtag that may be 4
associated with posts that encourage harmful behavior to animals or the environment”.
Only then can you see posts, learn more or cancel the operation. The warning will
appear for hundreds of hashtags, both in English and the languages of Thailand,
Indonesia and other nations where wildlife tourism is getting worse. Instagram isn’t
saying which words will start the flags, though, as it wants users to discover them on
their own.
The decision followed an investigation (调查) by National Geographic and World
Animal Protection into wildlife tourism. The investigators discovered that animals were
being captured (捕捉) illegally from rain forests and kept in cages, then brought out for
selfies with tourists not knowing their bad situation. World Animal Protection’s
Cassandra Koenen points out that the animals people most want to pet or hold, like
koalas, really don’t like being handled. And the problem is made worse because tourists
are terrible at determining which attractions treat animals poorly.
Though Instagram’s gesture doesn’t seem like it’ll be of great help, Koenen
believes that it will stop people that don’t mean harm and just don’t know better. “If
someone’s behavior is interrupted, hopefully they’ll think maybe they shouldn’t just
automatically like something or post something if Instagram is saying there’s a problem
with this photo,” she said.
24. Which will most probably be interrupted on Instagram?
A. Posting selfies on the website.
B. Looking for posts about tourism.
C. Searching for knowledge of animals.
D. Entering words “photos of ‘pandas and me’”.
25. What can we conclude from Paragraph 3?
A. Wildlife tourism can make animals suffer.
B. It is dangerous to take photos with animals.
C. Wild animals dislike being touched at all.
D. Tourists treat animals from rain forests badly.
26. Why does Instagram make this gesture according to the last paragraph?
A. To stop people posting selfies online.
B. To educate people on animal protection.
C. To give people more knowledge about animals.
D. To solve people’s problems when they post selfies.
C
“Sorry seems to be the hardest word” — that is one of Elton John’s most popular
songs. But not every public figure seems to find it so tough to say that powerful five-
letter word.
In recent days public figures, from politicians to stars, have all publicly expressed
remorse. But with so much remorse, how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt
expression of remorse?
Specifically, saying sorry should be a realization that something you have said or
done has hurt someone and you want to make amends (弥补). “People want the
response to be personal to them. They want to feel that they’re being listened to and
taken seriously,” says Martin Stone. 5
Firstly, it is important to show that you understand. It is vital that any group or
person making an apology understand the focus — is it sorry for the way it’s acted or
is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?
Watch out for the speed of response. The quicker the apology comes, the better it
indicates that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt.
If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for clues (线索) to see if
he or she is being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Performed
apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”, and are often accompanied by too
many unnatural gestures.
For a sincere apology, it is also important to avoid promises that can’t be kept.
Don’t say that you’ll make sure that this will not happen again if you’re not
confident that it won’t. It could come back to bite you. And do remember that the
use of “but” can hugely change the tone (语气) of an apology. As Stone points out,
“I’m sorry but …” sounds like you are making excuses and aren’t actually taking
any form of responsibility.
27. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain what a good apology is.
B. To discuss how to give a formal apology.
C. To show why we should apologize in life.
D. To teach us how to tell if an apology is sincere.
28. What does the underlined word “remorse” probably mean?
A. Pain. B. Worry. C. Regret. D. Doubt.
29. Which of the following indicates it’s a “performed” apology?
A. Swearing it won’t happen again.
B. Avoiding eye contact with the listener.
C. Showing you understand his/her feelings.
D. Paying attention to the listener’s reaction.
30. What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A. The attitude. B. The tone of voice.
C. The body language. D. The choice of language.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有
两项为多余选项。
Many of us can’t sleep at night, watching the clock tick and panicking about
tomorrow’s tiredness. Here are several truths you should know.
Controlled naps (小睡) help you get back your strength and energy again.
If napping makes you more tired, you’re not doing it right. 31 A power nap
of 5 to 20 minutes unloads the brain and can make you feel more recharged.
32
Staying in bed longer than usual at the weekend can’t make up for the losing sleep.
Try to wake up at the same time every day, even at the weekend. This trains your body
to use the time it has to sleep most efficiently. 6
Don’t ignore the effects of losing just one hour’s sleep a night.
Many people don’t get the recommended six to nine hours’ sleep a night. If you
miss some sleep one night, you can catch up the next night with no problem. 33
Exercise close to bedtime makes you relax.
Research shows that exercise before bedtime doesn’t cause sleep problems.
34 Indeed, people who exercise for at least 30 minutes before bedtime are the
least likely to take sleep medicine. And time spent in the deeper stages of sleep increases
after exercise.
Gene determines your sleep.
Sleep is like height, which is genetically determined. 35 You could be
among the lucky few genuine short-sleepers, if you wake up without an alarm clock at
the same time every day with only 4-5 hours’ sleep.
A. Wake up at the same time every day.
B. Some sleep problems arise due to stress.
C. It might even be beneficial in some cases.
D. The more you sleep, the healthier you will become.
E. So if your mum or dad is short sleepers, you may be too.
F. However, you’re in sleep debt after several nights of not sleeping enough.
G. The key is to take controlled naps which can make you feel more refreshed.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her
father told her that when facing a problem, she should never give up. Instead she should
try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembered her father’s words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always
her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with
her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous
designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn’t give up. One day, at a friend’s party, she
was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(编织的) sweater.
It wasn’t a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches(针法). Lisa asked that lady
if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs.
And then Lisa had an even braver idea. “Why not own a fashion store of my own? That
way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes,” she thought. So she decided to
begin with that kind of sweaters. 9
Lisa’s friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady
was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her
country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for
her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after
Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her
sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order 40
such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.
