What Are Some of Your Favorite Memories of
the University?
In preparation for each fall's 50th reunion, members of the milestone class are
asked to recall campus memories for an annual Memory Book.
Here's small part of selections of some memories from the Class of 1969.
Phyllis Jo Baunach
“...I cannot forget the endless hours of studying, researching, and learning
in the middle of the musty books in the stacks. We did everything by hand! But the
joys of ideas coming to life and understanding thorny concepts are
priceless.Additionally,I cannot forget the joyful hours of CoKast rehearsals for
studentwrittenanddirected plays, and the thrill of audience's responses to our
efforts.Nor will I ever forget taking voice lessons at the Eastman School of Music. This
course gave me confidence to try new musical approaches and to think on my feet.”
Paul Boehm
“...many sweet and lasting memories—five feet of deep snow, getting stranded
on the thruway, music at Hylie Morris' Alley, and,of course,I met my wife,Ellen
Blazer Boehm from the Class of 1972,when she was a freshman and I was a senior. As
a fiveyear chemical engineering major,I had one elective to spare, and Ellen said,
‘How about oceanography?’ So,I enrolled in oceanography with Dr.Taro Takahashi(the
famous climate scientist),which awakened my environmental juices, and changed my
professional direction.”
Farel Vella MeClure
“...I truly loved my four undergraduate years at the University of Rochester. In
fact,I loved it so much that I stayed an extra year to get a master's degree!I was
very fortunate to have been totally immersed in student life on campus. My memories
include campaigning and winning a seat on the student government during my freshman
year.Other memories include the Susan B.Anthony banquet, and sleeping in the comfy
chairs in the library.I was also privileged to be selected as a student representative
on the design team for the new Wilson Commons.I.M.Pei,the famous architect who
designed the Louvre Pyramid, was the architect for Wilson Commons. We even visited
his offices in New York to see the ‘master’ at work.”

(2020·济南市毕业班质检)George Nakashima always insisted that he was a simple
woodworker, not an artist.Even though major museums exhibited his works and the
director of the American Craft Museum called him a national treasure,Mr.Nakashima
rejected the label of artist. For almost fifty years he simply went on shaping wood
into beautiful chairs,tables,and cabinets.
Nakashima had a clear goal.He intended each piece of furniture he made to be as
perfect as possible.Even making a box was an act of creation, because it produced
an object that had never existed before.Initially Nakashima used local wood, sometimes
from his own property.Later,he traveled to seek out English oak,Persian walnut,
African zebrawood and Indian teak.He especially liked to find giant roots that had
been dug out of the ground after a tree was cut down.Nakashima felt that making this
wood into furniture was a way of allowing the tree to live again.
Most furniture makers prefer perfect boards, but Nakashima took pleasure in using
wood with interesting knots(节疤)and cracks. These irregularities gave the wood
personality and showed that those trees had lived a happy life.
He never failed to create an object that was both useful and beautiful. One early
piece Nakashima designed was a threelegged chair for his small daughter,Mira,
to use when she sat at the table for meals. The Mira Chair became so popular that
Nakashima later made both low and high versions.Another famous piece, the Conoid Chair,
has two legs supported by bladelike feet.Always,Nakashima's designs were precise
and graceful, marked by the simplicity that revealed his love for the wood.
As the years passed,Nakashima's reputation grew and his works received many
awards. His children Mira and Kevin, now adults, joined the team of craftsmen in their
father's studio. Nakashima's dream of integrating work and family had come true.

(2020·唐山二模)We have heard some interesting news about how 5G wireless
technology might change our lives in the future.
5G—short for the 5th Generation Cellular Network Technology , promises the
Internet speeds 50 to 100 times faster than current 4G systems. While 5G is set to
be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected
to receive widely available service until 2023.
One project in Britain, however,is already testing this superfast technology
on an unlikely group of the Internet users—cows. The project was developed by Cisco
Systems,an American technology company. It also receives money from the British
government.Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in
rural areas around the world.
Testing areas were set up on farms in three rural areas in England. The cows are
equipped with 5Gconnected devices that link up to a robotic milking system, which
uses sensors and machine learning to fully automate the process.System designers say
technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic
gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow.It then positions
equipment to the right body position for milking.During the process, machines release
food for the cow as a reward.
Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that start when the cow rubs
against them.Sensors also control the amount of light in the cows' living areas
depending on the weather. And an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always
get enough food to eat.
Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows the farm's
cow operation can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment
provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not
just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文,介绍了 5G 技术的特点及其在英国部分农场中的测试使

答案:D
难句分析:Duncan Forbes, head of the project, told Reuters that the project shows
the farm's cow operation can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the
experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the
future, not just on farms in Britain, but in rural communities across the world.(Para.6)
分析:此句中含有四个从句。told 后跟两个 that 引导的宾语从句,连接词为 and;shows

Life beneath the sea surface can be lovely and
lively. But many organisms there produce poisonous chemicals to hunt.Divers are now
collecting such poisons as drugs for human medicine.
Sharks aren't the scariest things in the ocean for scientists who dive to
work.Powerful currents can be just deadly. But the scientists who work underwater train
to deal with these dangers. The rewards of the research and underwater adventures are
greater than the risks.
The sea may seem like a strange place to look for new drugs. But organisms in the
ocean have had to adapt to the tough environment. The chemicals they make for survival
might help people, too.More than 50 years ago, scientists discovered a new anticancer
drug in a sea sponge.Since then, researchers have been searching the seas for more
of such useful natural products.
With the help of underwater robots and small submarines, scientists are searching
the seas—from shallow water to the great deep ocean.
Bacteria living in the Arctic cold water break down their food using different
ways from organisms on land. This process of turning food into energy for growth,
activities and reproduction is called metabolism(新陈代谢).These pathways also
produce chemicals called “secondary metabolites.”One day they also might help
people.
During a fouryear project called PharmaSea , scientists made thousands of
extracts(提取物)from those seafloor samples.In about a dozen of them,researchers
found mixtures that can kill bacteria that some of today's antibiotics( 抗 生
素)cannot.Three other newfound chemicals reduce epileptic seizures(“electrical
storms” in the brain)in mice.Yet another compound may reduce the symptoms of
Alzheimer's disease.
