Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a rich country. One day, he went for a trip to some parts of his
country far away. He decided to travel on foot to talk with his people. After several weeks of travel, the king returned
to the palace. He was quite happy that he had seen his people living a rich life. However, he complained(抱怨) that
his feet were very painful, because it was his first trip on foot covering such a long way. He complained to his
ministers(大臣) that the roads were very stony and weren’t comfortable to walk on. So he ordered his ministers to
cover every road with leather(皮革) so that the people in his country could walk comfortably.
The ministers were surprised at his order as it would mean that thousands of cows would have to be killed in
order to get enough leather.
Then one of them came up to the king and said that he had another idea. “Instead of covering the roads with
leather, why don’t you just have a piece of leather cut in proper shape to cover your feet?” he suggested.
The king praised the minister. Then he ordered a pair of leather shoes for himself.
In order to improve our lives, perhaps it is better to change ourselves, and not necessarily, the world.

After spending 40 hours playing the online game King of Glory, a middle school student had a stroke(中风) and
nearly died. This happened in Guangdong Province in April last year. It shows how bad things can get if one becomes
addicted to(沉迷) the Internet.
To stop more teenagers from becoming addicted to the Internet, the Ministry of Education(MOE 教育部) sent a
letter to all parents in China on April 20th, 2018.It calls on them to pay more attention to their children’s online
activities.
The MOE also sent an urgent(紧急 ) notice to primary and middle schools, asking them to monitor( 监督)
students’ Internet use. From now on, schools will pay more attention to their students’ Internet use and their use of
mobile phones.
Schools have been told to teach students how to avoid violent(暴力的) online events. If students show signs of
being addicted to the Internet, they can get help from their teachers to give up their addiction.
Among China’s 772 million Internet users, about 151 million of them are between the ages of 10 and 19,
according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
It’s important to pay attention to how much time you spend online. To make better use of the Internet, experts
advise that students should limit(限制) their screen time to less than 1.5 hours a day. To make better use of their free
time, they can develop good hobbies, like reading or playing sports.

Do you have a special talent or skill but can’t find a crowd that enjoys it? If so, you might want to go to
Christchurch, New Zealand, for the World Buskers Festival.
January is summertime in New Zealand, and the entertainment takes place outside. However, this is not the
typical outdoor music concert or festival you have known. The buskers─people who perform in the streets and in
other public places─bring the city to life with surprising entertainment.
The event begins in late January and attracts around 300,000 visitors every year with about 500 performances.
The performances include the circus(马戏表演), magic acts, street dancing and singing and other crazy forms of
entertainment.
One of the best things about the festival is how well it attracts the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest.
Laughs are everywhere, especially when unprepared visitors are asked to become a part of the performance.
The festival director says,“We have performers from all over the world. Most of the performances are free, so
you can bring your family and spend a whole day here.”
There’s something for everyone at the World Buskers Festival, one of the biggest and most popular street

Many Students want to improve their memories and learn better. Today we will introduce some no-cost things
you can do.
Exercise
Before you study, doing exercise may help you better remember what you will learn. Recently, researchers have
found that people who did 15 minutes of training remembered more words. Scientists say the best time to exercise is
right before you study. It can make you more active.
Pre-study test
The students who take a test before studying remember more information than those who don’t. For example, if
you are using an English textbook, you might first look at some important words at the end of the unit. You could ask
yourself what they mean or how they are used. While you might not know the answer, you will probably have a goal
to learn so that you can remember the answer when studying!
Sleep
A study shows that sleep helps you to learn in two ways. An expert explains that “a person with enough sleep
can concentrate best.” He also says, “Sleep itself plays an important role in making the memory stronger, which is
necessary for learning new information.”
Wakeful rest
When you finish studying, you often go straight to another activity. Perhaps you play a video game or watch TV.
But researchers suggest that resting after you study may help you remember what you’ve studied. In a study, even
older adults who rested for 10 minutes after learning new words remember more and better.
