Long ago in the forest, there was a lion. The lion knew he was the strongest and used his great power to eat the
other animals. Then one day, the lion made a deal with them.“Each day, one of you will come willingly(心甘情愿) to

this deal.
On the first evening, a clever rabbit was the first to go to the lion to be eaten so that the others could live without

was catching me.” “Another lion?”asked the lion angrily.“This is my forest. Show me where this lion lives.”

other lion. Immediately, he jumped into the well to fight against his enemy. The lion fell into the deep water and died.

Once all the animals lived in the forest happily together. A family went to spend a day in the forest, and the son
left his socks there. A bear found the socks, and decided to try them on. They looked so nice, and he liked them so
much that he wouldn’t take them off.
All the animals talked about the bear’s new look. Soon, in that forest, animals began to imitate(效仿) the bear,
wearing different clothes. The forest doctor told the animals,“This can’t be good. Animals don’t need clothes!” But no
one listened to him.
However, it wasn’t long before the first results of fashion-fever(时尚热)came. Several times the squirrel caught
his shirt on trees, stopping him in mid-jump and sending him falling to the ground from a tree. The mouse couldn’t go
into his hole without taking off his hat first. Even the bear, because of his socks, fell from the river rock and almost
killed himself.
When the animals came to see the doctor, he gave them all the same advice,“Take off those clothes before one
day they’re going to kill you.” Those who listened to the doctor’s advice stopped having accidents. And the animals
realized that they didn’t need clothes at all.They began to realize that sometimes they were hurting themselves for
vanity(虚荣).

There once lived a little deer in the forest. He had beautiful antlers(鹿角). He often showed off his antlers among
his friends, and he was praised by other animals. So he was very happy. But when he saw his ugly legs, he was very
sad.
One day, he was standing to look at his beautiful antlers in the river when a tiger came out of the forest. He had
been hungry for three days. When he found the deer, he was very excited. He rushed towards the deer quickly. The
deer heard a noise behind him and noticed the tiger. So he ran away immediately. The tiger ran after him. The deer
ran as fast as he could. Suddenly he stopped,because his antlers got caught in the branches (树枝) of a tree.
He was afraid that the tiger would come after him and eat him. Four legs jumped on the ground. He did his best
to get clear of the branches at last and began to run again. When he stopped at a safe place, he said to himself,“The
beautiful antlers almost took my life. But the ugly legs saved my life. The value of a thing is not in its external(外部
的) beauty.”

There was once an old and deep well. People got water by dropping a bucket(木桶) tied to a rope. The rope
passed over a wheel just above the well. On the other side of the rope was another bucket.
A strong pull brought one bucket to the top while the other down to the water. They always passed each other on
the way up and down, but never had time to speak.
At last, the rope became worn. So a new rope had to be put in its place. While this was being done, the two
buckets were left standing together near the well.
“What a boring life we have!” said one bucket to the other. “I am quite tired of it. No matter how full we come
up, we are always sent down empty.”
But the other bucket laughed and said, “What a funny way you have of looking at things! Don’t you see that
whenever we are sent down empty, we always come up full?”
Boys and girls sometimes talk like these two buckets. You may hear one of them say, “Just as we are having a
good game,we are made to stop and go to work again.” “Yes,” the other will reply, “but as soon as work is over, we
always get to go out and have fun again.”
