I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory. Our flight left the Orlando Airport one Friday morning. But immediately upon take-off, it was clear that something was wrong. The aircraft was bumping( 颠 簸 ) up and down. All the experienced travellers, including me, looked around with knowing smiles. If you fly much, you see these things and learn to act calmly about them. However, we did not remain calm for long. Minutes after we were in the air our plane began falling quickly. The pilot soon made a serious announcement. “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “Our indicators show that the control system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando Airport. The flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough touchdown.” In other words, we were about to crash. Many travellers looked visibly frightened now. No one faces death without fear, I thought. Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman’s voice, speaking in an ly normal conversational tone. I had to find the source of this voice. All around, people cried. Many screamed. Finally, I saw her. In this chaos, a mother was talking to her child. The woman, in her mid-30s, was staring full into the face of her daughter, who looked to be four years old. The child listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother’s words. The mother’s gaze held the child so fixed that she seemed untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her. Finally, I leaned over and by some miracle could hear this soft sure voice with the tone of comfort. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. Remember, no matter what happens, I love you always.” Fortunately, our landing gear held at last and our touchdown was not a tragedy. However, the voice I heard that day never faded. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like. 4. What does the author imply by saying “some travellers’ knowing smiles” in Paragraph 2? A. They were used to this kind of experience. B. They were quite familiar with each other. C. They were well-educated passengers. D. They were pretending to be calm. 5. What happened shortly after take-off? A. The plane met bad weather and had to return immediately. B. The flight indicators showed the plane’s control system failed. C. One of the passengers was badly ill and the plane had to turn back. D. A flight attendant explained flight safety instructions to the passengers. 6. Hearing the pilot’s announcement, how did most travellers respond? A. They asked for help. B. They remained calm. C. They cried and screamed. D. They rejected the bumpy landing. 7. What is the best title for the passage? A. The shape of love. B. The voice of courage. C. The wisdom of a pilot. D The danger of a journey. 4. A 5. B 6. C 7. This is especially key when people feel lonely. The researchers interviewed 32 people aged 59 to 83 years old. Pets included dogs, cats, birds, etc. More than 90%of the people spoke about touch in the relationship with their pets. "Participants often described touch-based interactions with their pets as being comforting or relaxing in a way that contributed to their overall wellbeing," the researchers say. "For our participants, comfort is the sense of being somehow cared for by another being. " Many people in the study spoke about how their pets just seemed to "know" when they weren't feeling well and they'd move to get physically near them. Different pets were better at providing comfort, some participants insisted. Many said cats were more relaxing companions than dogs, while others said dogs could be relaxing as long as they were "the right kind of dog". But almost all pets provided some sort of comfort to their owners when it came to touch. Janette Young, lecturer in health sciences at the University of South Australia, and her team uncovered an interesting thing about the pet-human relationship. People in the study often spoke about how their animals demanded to be petted or seemed to take joy in the interaction. This, in turn, made the humans feel good. The researchers suggest that pets can be "helpful in reducing touch deprivation(匮乏)" and the benefits can come from all kinds of pets. This connection can be particularly important in health care and senior care settings where patients and workers are less likely to be able to see friends and family; yet touch is important and can improve health and happiness. Pets can also offer benefits that in some cases people can't offer. "Relationships with pets are different to those with humans," Young says. "Animals don't judge and are always with us. " 8. About what did some participants hold different opinions? A. What pets were better at providing comfort. B. Whether pets could make them feel relaxed. C. How they felt when their pets touched them. D. When pets could notice their owners' discomfort. 9. What did Janette Young find about the pet-human relationship? A. It is full of judgments. B. It turns out temporary. C. It benefits both parties. D. It is determined by pets. 10. What may researchers suggest hospitals do? A. Encourage pet connection programs. B. Raise pets to reduce human touch. C. Select out the best pet companions. D. Order workers' friends to pay visits. 11. What is the main idea of the text? A. Humans need spiritual support. B. Pet-human interactions are common. C. Lonely people like living with pets. D. Pets offer humans touch-based comfort. 8. A 9. C 10. A 11. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it. The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna (天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration (持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation. While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a "future development". Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement (执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving. 12. Why is the roadside system used according to Paragraph 1? A. To send out cellphone signals to drivers. B. To detect drivers' illegal use of cellphone. C. To monitor people's use of phones while driving. D. To warm people against using pones while driving. 13. How does the detector of the roadside system work? A. It measures the length of the phone. B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand. C. It picks up radio waves from handsets. D. It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system. 14. What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign? A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving. B. Have a close watch of road signs. C. Avoid being picked up by detectors. D. Stop using a hands-free mobile phone. 15. What will the county council probably do in the future? A. Share the devices with the police. B. Make the system more advanced. C. Replace the police with the new system. D. Take steps to settle road safety problems. 12. D 13. C 14. A 15. You are going to have to find another place to live.” I couldn’t believe what Neil, my landlord, was telling me on that warm April night. I was upset. I had lived on the first floor of his house for long. Ever since I moved back to New York City several years ago, I had had a strong affection for this apartment. And I liked the community, I had a good friend, Joanna, who lived in the community too. Originally, Neil lived on the second floor of the house. But a few years before, he had moved into his wife Debbie’s house a few miles away, lie repainted his old room on the second floor of the house, and rented that space out to some young girls. Generally, I had a harmonious relationship with these neighbors. But to say wc were friends was a stretch. Unluckily, Neil later had a serious injury, which ended his grocery career. Then he and Debbie decided to sell her house to cover his medical expenses and move back here. Neil had never raised my rent. This vas a big comfort when I was laid off from my newspaper job. Now I was going to have to find a new apartment and pay more. My neighbors upstairs had a long-term contract with Neil. I guessed that Neil actually didn’t want me to move out. But he had no choice. If he had broken the contract with them, he would have paid them lots of money as a fine. So he had to ask me to move out. After hearing the news, I was anxious. I was so upset that I got into bed and pulled the covers over my head. It was only 7:00 p.m., but I just wanted to go to sleep and forget what was happening. Paragraph 1: At around 7:30 p.m., my upstairs neighbors had a few friends over, and made lots of noise. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2: Eager to find another apartment, I got up very early the next morning. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 【答案解析】 Paragraph1: At around 7:30 p.m., my upstairs neighbors had a few friends over, and made lots of noise. I opened my front door violently, eager to yell out toward their room. However, I controlled my temper and just reminded them in a friendly way. Then the noise upstairs disappeared. But I was still anxious about having to move out of the apartment. So I called Joanna and told her about the bad news. Joanna advised me to look on the bright side. After talking with her, I felt much better and fell asleep soon. Paragraph2: Eager to find another apartment, I got up very early the next morning. I visited several apartments for rent. But I didn’t find a suitable one. At six o’clock, I returned to my apartment, feeling exhausted. To my surprise, I met Neil and he brought me good news. “Lisa, you don’t need to move out. I’ve talked with your upstairs neighbors. And they were quite kind girls and were willing to move out to help you. By the way, they were sorry for the noise they made last night.” I felt so moved by what Neil and my neighbors had done for me. 大喊:yell out/shout at/ call out ②.建议做某事:recommend sb. to do sth./ suggest sb. do sth./ advise sb. do sth.
