The Language of Music
A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. ___36___.
Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer( 作 曲 家 ) is
completely dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as hard a training to become
a performer as a medical students needs to become a doctor. ___37___. Singers practice breathing
ever day, as their vocal chords(声带) would be inadequate without controlled muscular(肌肉的)
support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing
the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements.
Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are
spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them. ___38___. But they
have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be made not to sound like
percussion(打击乐器), and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.
This problem of getting clear texture(质感) is one that student conductors face: ___39___
and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sounds with crazy but selfless
authority.
___40___. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music
that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.
A. singers and players get on very well
B. Most training is concerned with technique
C. they have to learn to know every note of the music
D. You would not become a pianist if you didn’t practice a lot
E. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed
F. It is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them
G. Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding

Curling(冰壶) is a winter sport played on ice. Therefore, it's most popular in northern
countries like Canada. Curling is played in the USA by about 15 000 people. 36 Scottish
winters were long and there were few forms of entertainment. So people began making a sport out
of sliding heavy stones on the frozen lakes. The game spread, and in the 1700s curling clubs
formed. Then Scottish soldiers brought it to North America.
37 Men, women, and children often compete on the same team, if they can slide a
forty-pound stone down the ice! Both teams slide their stones toward the same goal. After all 16
stones have been cast, the team whose stone has slid closest to the goal gets one point.
38 The ice is so smooth and the stone is so heavy that even the smallest misjudgment in a
throw can make the stone slide much too far or stop too suddenly. 39 Water helps the stone
slide, but it can also change the stone's path.
In curling, a broom is part of each player's equipment. A good curler must know how much
force to use. The player must know the exact conditions of the ice on the court. 40
That may explain why the International Olympic Committee decided to make curling an Olympic
sport in 1998.
A. Players compete on the court.
B. Then the play begins in the other direction.
C. Curling is played by teams of four people.
D. In other words, a good curler must be a fine athlete.
E. The rules are easy to learn, but laying the game is hard.
F. The melting of the ice makes things tough for the curlers.
G. Curling probably began in Scotland in the 1500s or earlier.
