A . A study of the drug found it reduced the risk of deaths caused by bleeding during childbirth by nearly one third. The study involved 20,000 women in 21 countries, mainly in Africa and Asia. The trial was carried out by London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The drug is called tranexamic acid(凝血酸). It is lowcost and researchers said it does not cause serious side effects for mothers or babies. The drug is used to treat mothers for serious bleeding during childbirth. Postpartum hemorrhage(产后出血)is the leading cause of maternity(产妇的)death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Haleema Shakur is the project director of the trial. She says though medical conditions are improved in many countries, serious bleeding after childbirth remains a big problem in some parts of the world. “It’s one of the biggest killers of mothers. In Africa and Asia, about 10 percent of women will end up with serious bleeding.” The drug works after a mother gives birth. Shakur said the best results were reported when the drug was given to women as soon as possible after childbirth. “The earlier you give it—so within the first three hours of giving birth—the better the effect is.” The next step will be to find where the drug is needed and provide training for doctors and nurses on how to use it. During the trial, women were given the drug in a hospital. But researchers are looking for easier ways to use the drug so it can be more widely used in small clinics and rural areas. 1.What can we know about the drug according to the first paragraph? In 1984, at the age of 23, she married Bill. They were blessed with two children, a boy and a girl. By 1991 their love had deepened, and they were happy. Later that year, Bill developed a white spot on his tongue. He visited a doctor. One day shortly after that, Bill called Karen to sit beside him. He said with tears in his eyes that he loved her and wanted to live forever with her. The doctor suspected that he had been infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. The family was tested. Bill and Karen’s results were positive. Bill had become infected before he met Karen; then he passed the virus on to Karen. The children’s results were negative. Within three years, Bill was dead, “I don’t know how to express what it is like to watch the once handsome man you love and intend to live with forever dying slowly. I cried many nights. He died three months short of ten years of our marriage, ” says Karen. Though a doctor told Karen that she would soon follow her husband into death, she is still alive. The infection has progressed to the early stages of AIDS. Karen is one of about 30 million people now living with HIV/AIDS, a figure larger than the combined populations of Australia, Iceland and Paraguay. According to one UN report, Africa has 21 million of these victims. By the turn of the century that number could reach 40 million and the disease will bring on the greatest disaster in human history. Of the world’s sexually active adults aged 15 to 49, 1 in 100 has already been infected with HIV. Of these, only 1 in 10 realizes that he or she is infected. In some parts of Africa, 25 percent of adults are infected. Since the beginning of spread of AIDS in 1981, about 11.7 million people have died of it. It is roughly calculated that in 1997 alone, about 2.3 million people died of it. Nevertheless, there are fresh reasons for optimism in the battle against AIDS. During the past few years, there has been a drop in new AIDS cases in wealthy nations. In addition, promising drugs hold out hope of better health and longer life. 4.By telling the story of Karen, the author intends to _______. However, it turns out that chocolate can be more salutary to your teeth than you might expect. Recent studies show that chocolate can effectively fight against tooth decay, as if we need another excuse to eat chocolate. Chocolate offers protection like fluoride, a main ingredient in most household toothpastes. Not only does chocolate protect our teeth, but it can do so very effectively. Studies show that chocolate has compounds that provide strong protection for teeth. One of the compounds in chocolate, CBH, is shown to protect even more effectively than fluoride. Tooth decay happens when bacteria work to turn sugar into acids in our mouth. This is why eating foods with high sugar content can lead to more tooth decay. The compounds in chocolate, however, are antibacteria and can fight against bacteria in your mouth. The CBH compound in particular also works to strengthen tooth enamel (牙釉 质), and protects against tooth decay. Does this mean you can cat as much chocolate as you want without worrying about your teeth? It depends on the types of chocolate that you like. The protective effect of chocolate is most effective when you chew on cocoa beans. Of course, this option is not very appealing to; most people. A more tasty option is to choose dark chocolate with little sugar content, ideally no more than 6 to 8 grams per serving. For other types of chocolate with higher sugar content, the effect will be lessened. However, because of the protective compounds, it is still better for your teeth than other sweets and desserts containing the same amount of sugar. 8.The word “salutary” in paragraph 1 means? If such drugs were offered to people with heart risks regardless of their blood pressure at the beginning of treatment, it could save millions of lives, researchers in Oxford University found. For the study, the team analyzed more than 120 medical trials, including around 600, 000 people conducted over two decades, saying their findings are a call for an urgent review of existing blood pressure treatment guidelines. “Our findings clearly show that treating blood pressure to a lower level could greatly reduce the risk of heart disease, if widely conducted, ” said the study’s lead author Kazem Rahimi. High blood pressure has long been identified as a factor in higher risks of heart disease and strokes, and makes more than a billion people around the globe suffer torment, including one out of three U. S. adults. Blood pressure is recorded in millimeters of mercury(mmHg)as two numbers in a ratio: “systolic(心脏收缩 的)”pressure inside the arteries(动脉)when the heart beats as the top number, and “diastolic(心脏舒张的)” pressure between heartbeats, as the heart rests and is refilled with blood. “Normal” blood pressure is considered at 120/80 or below, and is considered “high” at 140/90 or above, according to the American Heart Association. The researchers said their study showed that for every reduction in systolic pressure of 10 mmHg, the risk of heart attacks was reduced by a fifth and that of a stroke around a quarter. Some experts said they thought the study’s findings were important but did offer some warnings. “One important warning is that not everyone will be able to tolerate having their blood pressure reduced to low levels, and there is a need to balance possible side effects of the drug and likely benefits, ” Smith said. 12.What do the findings indicate? A. Normal blood pressure doesn’t mean a healthy body. B. The existing blood pressure treatment is useless. C. High blood pressure is the first health killer. D. People with heart risks must use drugs to lower pressure. 故选 A 项。 13.What does the underlined word “torment” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Tolerance. B. Loss. C. Pain. D. A. how to measure blood pressure B. what high and normal blood pressures are C. the factors in heart attacks and strokes D. the connection between some diseases and blood pressure 【答案】D 【解析】细节理解题。 由第四段最后一句“ ... for every reduction in systolic pressure of 10 mmHg, the risk of heart attacks was reduced by a fifth and that of a stroke around a quarter. ”可知, 收缩压降低 10 毫米汞柱,心脏病发作的风险会降低五分之一,中风的风险会降低四分之一左右。 由此可知,作者写作第四段是为了解释某些疾病和血压之间的关系,故选 D 项。 15.What can be inferred from Smith’s words? A. He thought less of the findings. B. Reducing blood pressure isn’t safe for everyone. C. Most experts disagree with the findings. D. Side effects of the drug are bigger than benefits. 由最后一段最后一句“One important warning is that not everyone will be able to tolerate having their blood pressure reduced to low levels ...”Smith said. Drugs are chemicals that change the way a person’s body works. Yours, Li Hua 写作(二) My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID19 on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防): We washed our hands with soap , did not share food and had no significantly close contact. A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptomsfor a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend. At once, Megan called our state’s coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system’s coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes’ drive from my house. The result made my heart sank—I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn’t equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine(隔离)myself. Following the doctor’s advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids’ rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus. Paragraph 1: We decided to call everyone we had been in contact with over the course of the past week. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Though worried about the seriousness of the virus ,I knew I had to be brave. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 We decided to call everyone we had been in contact with over the course of the past week. Megan insisted that we should let them know that I had tested positive. Hard as it was to inform people that we might have given them the coronavirus, it was the responsible thing to do. To our pleasant surprise, all of our friends showed their understanding and support upon hearing the news. To cheer us up, one of my wife’s best friends even baked a cake with the letters "Stay strong" on it and delivered it to our front door. Though worried about the seriousness of the virus. I knew I had to be brave. I made sure to get plenty of rest and did some exercise to stay as healthy as I could. I also managed to ease the worries of Megan and our kids during our quarantine by spending more time doing online videochats with them. Within the following week, my fever started to fade and I could feel my head clearing. The next test showed a cheering result. It came back negative. Had it not been for the love and care from those around me, I wouldn’t have made it.
