How much do you know about the coronavirus outbreak in Italy? 选自 new scientist Italy has put the country’s 60 million people on lockdown in the most drastic action taken outside China to tackle the spread of coronavirus(冠状病毒). As of 10 March, the country had diagnosed more than 9100 cases, second only to China. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said Italy may not stop at the current restrictions and could use further “massive shock therapy”(大规模休克疗法). Travel restrictions just for northern Italy were first leaked on Saturday, causing panicked reactions before an official decree was published on Sunday. The measure, unexpectedly extended to the whole of Italy on Monday night, means people must limit travel except for work or medical reasons, or risk a three month prison sentence or a €206 fine. The travel ban is being enforced on roads by the Carabinieri (military police), while rail services – including night trains from Paris to Venice – have been cancelled. However, flight-tracking service Flightradar24 says that more than 250 flights departed from the five airports for Milan and Venice on Monday, the area initially locked down on Sunday. British Airways announced on Tuesday that it was cancelling all flights to and from Italy. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has changed its travel advice, advising against all but essential travel to Italy and telling anyone returning from the country to self-isolate for 14 days even if they have no symptoms. UK nationals are still able to leave Italy, it added. The Italian authorities said the draconian measures are necessary to slow the spread of the virus and relieve the burden on healthcare systems. A report in The Guardian said 733 people were in intensive care in the Lombardy region, one of the worst affected regions, but it only has about 500 public health intensive care beds. “We are encouraged that Italy is taking aggressive measures to contain its epidemic. And we hope they prove effective in the coming days,” said World Health Organization (WHO) director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press conference on Monday. 1】:. Besides we can’t deny that some bad guys mask themselves very well so that they can get many nice people (30) _________ (trap). 2】: Perhaps the best way (35) _________ (learn) how to behave in the working world is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. 【答案】to learn 【解析】根据 way 的用法:the way to do sth,所以需用不定式形式做定语。 3】:.They were fond of comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, (39) _________ (check) prices before making a new purchase. 4】. It is essential for you to know why you are speaking and (25) _________ you wish to accomplish by your speech. 5】. It was they (33) _________ first tried to persuade Hilton to remain open all night. 1 Highly gifted children benefit from explanation as much as their peers Schools tend to assume that highly gifted children can manage by themselves and that they do not need any extra support. As a result, they sometimes seem (21) ________ (forget). Psychologist Bart Vogelaar conducted a research and discovered that a high gift does not mean (22) ________ (perform) to the children’s maximum capacity. He finds out that this group too benefits from training and explanation and that strangely enough, the benefits are the same (23) ________ both groups. In his research, Vogelaa made use of dynamic tests(动态测试), (24) ________ ________ children received training and their progress was measured afterwards to give a better image of their learning capabilities. 522 children aged between five and ten years -- 173 highly gifted and 349 averagely gifted -- took part in (25) ________ was so-called learning potential test. The children (26) ________ (assign) to solve analogical reasoning(类推)tasks. Three boxes were filled with figures that changed from one box to the next according to a particular rule, for example, in size or in position. The children had to use analogical reasoning to draw (27) ________ figure in the last box. Afterwards, the children were given a training, (28) ________ (follow) by a further set of tasks as a post-assessment. Vogelaar: “This kind of test gives a better insight into how well children learn because we are able to measure (29) ________ ________ how much they progress on a new task, but also how much and what kind of help they need to achieve this progress.” The test showed that all groups of children made progress, from the starting to the post-measurement, with major individual differences. “It confirms that talented (30) ________ many children are, they benefit from teachers’ help to a great extent, and that they don't always show their full potential in tests.” Vogelaar concludes. 21. to be forgotten 22. performing 23. for 24. in which 25. what 26. were assigned 27. the 28. followed 29. not only 30. as/though 2 Have you ever seen an old movie called Three Coins in the Fountain? It is about three young American women (21) (search) for permanent romance in Rome and they all find it. Far-fetched Hollywood? Well, from the world history point of view, romance did, in fact, set down its roots in Rome. The word romance evolved in Latin from Roma to Romanicus of the Roman language, to the Old French romanz escrive, (22) means “to write in a Romance language,” and on to the English romance. The Romance languages (23) (compose) of seven groups of languages that all have Latin (24) their basis. These languages include French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The common people in ancient Rome spoke (25) is referred to as Vulgar Latin, an informal speech, as opposed to the classical Latin of the more educated. Most language experts agree that Vulgar Latin is the chief source of the Romance languages. Medieval Romances were tales (26) (write) primary in French verse about brave heroes. The notion of having a romance with another person is thought (27) (develop) sometime during the Middle Ages. In the late 8th century and on through the 19th, a romance was not a love story (28) a work of prose fiction that contained far-fetched, mysterious events. Romances of this period (29) (include) English Gothic novels like The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole. What exactly is a twentieth-century romance? Does it have any relationship with the lively, popular novels written today, with their fantastic plots of love affairs? Or did the playwright Oscar Wilde have it right in The Picture of Dorian Gray:”When one is in love, one always begins by deceiving (30) and one always ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance.” 21.searching 22. which 23. are composed 24. as 25. what 26. written 27. to have developed 28. but 29. included 30. oneself/himself 3 Should Children Ban Their Parents from Social Media? It might be taken for granted - but no previous generation of children will have had the experience of having their entire childhoods intensively and publicly documented in this way. But the very first people to have had some of their childhood pictures __21__ (post) online are not always happy about their formative years being preserved in digital world. Parents may not realize it, but by posting photos and videos of their children online, they are creating an identity for their children __22__ might not be welcomed. Lucy is a good example. She said she had asked her dad to de-tag her from “stuff that doesn’t necessarily represent __23__ I am now. That’s not something I’d want to remember every time I log on to Facebook… It isn’t the best memories, which is the way you’d like to reveal __24__ on social media.” Stories about online privacy are often about children and teenagers being warned of the dangers of publishing too much personal information online. But in this case it’s their parents who are in the spotlight. For some parents, __25__ (safe) option is avoiding social media altogether. Kasia Kurowska from Newcastle is expecting her first child in June and has agreed with her partner Lee to impose a blanket ban __26__ her children are old enough to make their own decisions about social media. But she has two big concerns about her plan. Firstly, it will be difficult __27__ (impose). “When their auntie comes round and takes a picture, we’re going to have to be like paparazzi police, saying, please don’t put these on Facebook. And secondly, the child might dislike __28__ (not own) an online presence, especially if all of their friends do. But I __29__ (keep) a digital record of them. It just won’t have been shared on a platform __30__ the masses.” 21. posted 22. that / which 23. who / what 24. yourself / yourselves 25. the safest 26. until / before 27. to impose 28. not owning 29. will keep 30. for Disney extends theme park closures 'until further notice,' citing coronavirus pandemic A. unprecedented B. amusement C. infected D. respect E. extend F. indefinitely G. moderation H. provided I. complex J. representing K. simultaneously The Walt Disney Company said Friday that both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will remain closed indefinitely due to the novel coronavirus. “While there is still much uncertainty with (31) ______ to the impacts of COVID-19, the safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains The Walt Disney Company’s top priority,” Disney said in a statement. “As a result of this (32) ______ pandemic and in line with direction (33) ______ by health experts and government officials, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed until further notice,” the statement said. (A) While a female politician or first lady can use her clothing to create a favorable public image, male politicians don’t have as many fashion choices to play with. But Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems to have discovered a goldmine – his socks. He’s been seen wearing “statement socks” at many public events. For example, during a NATO meeting in Brussels in May, Trudeau wore one blue sock and one pink, both with the NATO symbol printed on them. And in June, he wore a pair of socks with the pattern of maple leaves – a national symbol of Canada – when he appeared on a TV show. The New York Times’ editor Vanessa Friedman praised Trudeau’s play on his socks as “clever”. “[Socks] are subtle enough not to be distracting, but visible enough that you can’t miss the point,” she wrote. “Rarely have a man’s ankles said so much.” But not all the playful socks that Trudeau wears send some kind of political message – some of them are just for fun. One example is a pair he wore during a meeting with Enda Kenny, then the prime minister of Ireland, in Montreal on May 4. During their meeting, Trudeau wore Star Wars socks – simply because that day happened to be International Star Wars Day. If this pair of socks sent out any message, according to Vogue magazine reporter Emily Farra, that message was “just that he has a quirky side and loves George Lucas films,” she wrote. However, some say that 45-year-old Trudeau’s unusual sock choices show a childish side of the prime But Friedman doesn’t see it that way. “The socks have been a source of pride and applause on an international scale – a symbol both of Mr Trudeau’s ability to embrace multiculturalism and of his position as a next-generation leader not bound by old traditions,” she wrote. “[They have] opened up possibilities for the future.” 1. Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concis e way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent (相关 的) considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative i mportance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathemati cally calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest num ber of points emerges as the best decision. Since most important problems are multifaceted (多层面的), there are several alte rnatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people t o deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remembe r. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A wor ksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variable s with complex relationships. A realistic example for my college students is the questi on "What will I do after graduation?" A graduate might seek a position that offers sp ecialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year. A decision-making worksheet begins with succinct (简洁的) statement of the pro blem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on long-range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to "What will I do after graduation that will lead to a successful career?" 1. Your clients and colleagues don’t have time to engage fully with every e-mail they get. Some of them receive hundreds of messages per day. That’s why they start with the ones they can deal with quickly. They may never get around to answering — or even reading — the rest. So how do you earn their attention? Try these tips: Stick to standard capitalization and punctuation. Conventions of good writing may A. Add a short but descriptive subject line. B. Rushed e-mails that violate the basic norms of written language bespeak carelessness. seem like a waste of time for e-mail, especially when you’re tapping out messages on a handheld device. But it’s a matter of getting things right — the little things. Even if people in your group don’t capitalize or punctuate in their messages, stand out as someone who does. 1. __________________________________________And their abbreviated style can be confusing. It takes less time to write a clear message the first time around than it does to follow up to explain what you meant to say. Be brief — but not too brief. 2. _________________________________The more they have to scroll or swipe, the less receptive they’ll be to your message. They’ll probably just skim it and miss important details — or skip it altogether. So rarely compose more than a single screen of reading. Focus your content, and tighten your language. But as you’re trimming the fat from your message, keep the meat intact. When giving a project update, for example, supply enough background information to orient your readers. Consider your message from their perspective. They aren’t as immersed in your project as you are, and they probably have many other things going on. So remind them where things stood when you last sent an update, and describe what’s happened since then. 3. _________________________________Before hitting “Send,” check your subject line. If it’s generic or blank, your message will get lost in your recipient’s overstuffed inbox. Are you asking someone to take action? Highlight that in the subject line. Make your request easy to find — and fulfill. Copy people judiciously. Include only those who will immediately grasp why they’re on the thread; don’t automatically click on “Reply All.” Your correspondent may have been over inclusive with the “Copy” list, and if you repeat that mistake, you’ll continue to annoy the recipients who shouldn’t be there.4. _____________________________________________ 第 II 卷(共 40 分) I.
