B My violin is like a soul mate that whispers words of wisdom to me. Together, we’ve gone through both tears and happiness. About 12 years ago, I made acquaintance with it following an order from my mom. Many hours of boredom were spent practicing it. And to make things worse, the disappointment in my teacher’s eyes as I played the wrong notes was like an invisible hammer, striking on my heart. One day, I finally decided: I hate it! By chance, things changed when I was seven. I was at home lying on the sofa, wondering how those famous violinists dealt with this terrible dilemma. I searched online for the E-minor Concerto, a well-known violin work by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and listened to it. A beautiful and mysterious sound came from the violin as the bow moved across it. It was like the music slid over the flowers, rose up, and started to fill the air. The violin’s voice woke up the sun, made the trees green, and freshened the air. As the music changed, the sky turned back to gray. A gloomy shade covered the grass as all the sunshine disappeared. I could hear children crying and men shouting. It was like an invisible claw had grabbed my heart tightly, making it unable to beat. That glorious day set off my passion and interest in violin — I grabbed mine and never let it go. Before the memories faded, I stared at my instrument. Without hesitating, I picked it up, rosined(用松香擦) the bow, and began to play. Peace filled my heart. My violin has been by my side for 12 years. When I feel happy, an energetic tune makes it even better; when I’m deep in sorrow, a peaceful tune washes it away, when I’m walking on air, feeling especially pleased with my achievements, solemn(庄严的) tunes calm me down. Gradually, it has become a part of my life. My violin, shall I compare you to a summer’s day? 24.What further contributed to the author’s dislike of violin-playing? A.Orders from mum. B.Boredom of practice. C.Loss of passion for violin. D.Disappointment in the teacher’s eyes. 25.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A.The author’s feeling was continuously influenced by the music. B.The weather actually changed because of the tune. C.The sudden change made the author’s heart unable to beat. D.The scenery outside the room was quite attractive. 26.Why did the author pick up the violin again? A.The invisible hammer and claw are gone. B.The beautiful imagination changed his attitude. C.A famous tune aroused his interest and passion. D.He was crazy about Felix Mendelssohn’s works. 27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Deep love for music B.My dislike and like of violin C.An inspiring story of violin D.Musical soul mate—violin C Whales are big, but why aren't they even bigger? A new study says the key factor is how many calories they can take in. Researchers came to this conclusion after using small boats to chase down 300 whales of various species around the world. They reached out with long poles to attach sensors (传感器) to the creatures, allowing them to record what whales were doing as they dived for food. The study included 90 blue whales, the biggest animals ever to live. Size estimates vary, but they can grow to about 100 feet long and weigh more than 100 tons, according to the American Cetacean Society. The research also included sperm whales, the biggest whales with teeth; they can grow to about 60 feet in length. Toothed whales hunt their prey (猎物) one at a time, seeking them out in the dark depths with a sonar-like detection. But as their body size increases, their hunting style becomes progressively less efficient — they take in fewer calories from their meals than the number they burn in each dive. That's a result of the limited availability of prey. Blue whales grow bigger because they feed in a much different and more efficient way, the researchers reported. They open their mouths wide to take in an enormous volume of water — even bigger than their body size — as they swim along. They then close their mouths and strain the water out through a sieve-like filter (过滤器), trapping huge numbers of tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill. That "allows them to take advantage of a very large prey resource that's very rich in a small amount of time," said Jeremy Goldbogen of Stanford University, another member of the research team. "They get a huge bang for the buck. " So why aren't they even bigger than they are? Perhaps blue whales are limited by the seasonal nature of the most nutritious krill patches, which grow huge and dense in the summer," Goldbogen said. "And calculations indicate that to sustain a blue whale that's 115 feet long, you'd need a density of prey that is just not seen anywhere in the world." 28.How did researchers conduct the study? A.By detecting whales with poles. B.By tracking whales with devices. C.By filming whales' preying on boats. D.By recording whales' sound from sensors. 29.What do we know about toothed whales? A.They can grow to about 100 feet long. B.They seek prey in the shallow waters. C.They hunt less efficiently as they grow older. D.They dive consuming more calories as they grow bigger. 30.What makes blue whales different from toothed whales in size? A.Blue whales have big mouths. B.Blue whales hunt in the deep sea. C.Blue whales eat more varieties of foods. D.Blue whales hunt for food more efficiently. 31.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 refer to? A.Preying takes more time than before. B.Preying becomes easier than expected. C.Whales get a greater harvest from preying. D.Whales consume more calories than they obtain. D Many of us are quick to blame(责备)others for how we feel: "He makes me so mad!" or "he really hurt my feelings. "But did someone really "make me angry" or are we feeling the anger in us getting kicked up in response to the way someone behaved towards us? The difference between the two is in who the responsible party is for the way we feel. If we blame others for our feelings we will finally feel reasonable at whatever our retaliation(报复)my be, and we will explain that it was their fault, not ours. "They were driving me mad". When we blame others for the way we feel we have in fact given power to others for the state of our emotional wellbeing(健康). The truth is , no one controls our feelings but us. If we are finding that people in our lives really know how to "push our buttons(means make us angry)" then we are not doing a good enough job at protecting our "buttons." We are the ones leaving our buttons out in the open so that other people can "push them." Ultimately, the switch for our buttons is inside us - not on the outside. While there are some things in life that are clearly out of our control , like the weather or a flight that's two hours late, how we act and respond to other people's behavior is not among them. Our responses to others are well within our control. If someone is "making us" so mad , for example, that we get angry, we are not doing enough to learn about what drives our anger and how to properly cope with it. My suggestion is taking time before you get angry. and putting some work into taking an inventory(清单)of the past. An inventory can show you how much of your past experiences influence your feeling reactions in the current moment. When we finally realize that so much of our present feelings and reactions are driven from within ourselves and our own past experiences, we will be ready to make the changes in our lives that will better secure our buttons so that they are no longer left out in pubic for everyone to push at will. 32.What result will appear if we blame others for our emotions(情感)? A.We consider others to be correct. B.We consider ourselves to be correct. C.We consider we were driving ourselves mad. D.We consider they were driving themselves mad. 33.What's the author' attitude towards feelings? A.We should blame others for the way we feel. B.We should enable others to control our feelings. C.We should let others know our daily life clearly D.We should control personal feelings ourselves. 34.According to the author, which can always be under our control? A.Our own behavior. B.The delay of a flight C.Other people' s feelings. D.The weather conditions. 35.Which proverb best suits the author' s advice in Paragraph 5? A.A burden of one's choice is not felt. B.Think twice before acting. C.A friend is easier lost than found. D.A good beginning is half done. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余 选项. Language Learning Learning a new language can be tricky at any age. But in a recent study, scientists have pinpointed the exact age at which your chances of reaching fluency in a new language seem to quickly drop off: 10. Does this mean you should quit your French class if you’re older than 10? Non! 36. It found that it’s “nearly impossible” to reach fluency if you start learning a language after age 10. That’s not because language skills start to go downhill. “You’re still learning fast,” says Joshua Hartshorne, one of the study’s coauthors. “It’s just that you run out of time, because your ability to learn starts dropping at around 17 or 18 years old.” People who start learning a new language after age 10 may still become quite good, the authors say. 37. Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. Children’s brains are more adaptable than those of adults. 38. “All learning involves the brain changing,” Hartshorne says. “Children’s brains seem to be a lot more good at changing.” Kids may also be more willing than adults to try new things. And while adults tend to fall back on the rules and patterns of their first language, kids are able to approach a new one with a blank slate. 39. It promised to guess people’s native language, dialect, and home country, based on their responses to English grammar questions. At the end of the quiz, people entered their actual native language. They also reported if and when they had learned any other languages and where they had lived. Nearly 670,000 people took the quiz. Analyzing people’s responses and grammar mistakes allowed them to draw conclusions about language learning. The findings also offer ideas for adults hoping to pick up a new language. 40. Moving to a place where your chosen language is spoken all the time is the best way for adults to learn. Learners of all ages can search out native speakers in their community to talk with. By creating an immersive environment, it’s possible to become good at speaking a new language. A.Now that’s worth talking about! B.But they are unlikely to become fluent. C.The study appeared in the journal Cognition. D.For the study, the researchers created an online quiz. E.This means they’re better able to respond to new information. F.This gave researchers huge amounts of data from English speakers of many ages and backgrounds. G.Researchers found that people did better when they learned by immersion rather than only in a classroom. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节 (共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白 处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。 Suppose that 54.3 percent of your country’s population had cancer. That figure might set off a nationwide 41 —a search for something wrong with people’s diet, the environment, acidity levels. In fact, that’s the percentage of Americans who show a positive skin response to one or more allergens. The 42 of allergy—sneezing, itching, rashes—are signs of an immune system running amok, attacking foreign invaders—allergens—that mean no harm. Allergies 43 kill. They just make the sufferer miserable—sometimes for brief periods, and sometimes for life. Allergies are essentially an epidemic of modernity. As countries become more industrialized, the percentage of population affected by them tends to grow higher. There are remote areas of South America or Africa where allergies are virtually 44 . Here’s how an allergy develops: One day, a body is exposed to a protein in something that seems perfectly 45 —the wheat flour, say, in a home-baked muffin. But for some unclear reason, the body looks at the protein and sees trouble. There will be no 46 at first, but the body is remembering—and planning. That first exposure causes the immune system to produce an antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E). Then IgE antibodies attach to certain cells, called mast cells, in tissue throughout the body. There they stay like 47 soldiers waiting for war. With a second exposure, even months later, some of the allergen binds with the IgE on the mast cell. This time the mast cell releases a flood of 48 chemicals, which cause inflammation and itching. There is, unquestionably, a 49 component to allergies. A child with one asthmatic parent has a good chance of developing the condition. If both parents have asthma, the chance of occurrence increases. Still, the rise in allergies is too rapid to be explained 50 by genetics. “The genetic pool can’t change that much in such a short time,” says Donald Leung, director of an allergy-immunology program in the U.S. “There have to be environmental and 51 factors as well.” Dozens of theories have blamed everyone from urban landscapers for 52 male plants (the ones that produce pollen), to women who don’t breastfeed. Breastfeeding, the theory goes, confers greater protection against allergies. Another probable factor: diet. “Reduced fresh fruit and vegetable intake, more processed food, fewer antioxidants, and low intake of some minerals—these are all shown to be a 53 ,” says professor of medicine Harold Nelson, considered one of the foremost experts on allergies in the U.S. Another prime culprit: environmental pollutants. Exactly what pollutants and in what quantities are a 54 of heated debate. One of dozens of examples: Children who are raised near major highways and are exposed to diesel fumes from trucks register a(n) 55 sensitivity to allergens they already react to. 41.A.awareness B.shame C.panic D.campaign 42.A.causes B.diagnosis C.features D.manifestation 43.A.absolutely B.rarely C.normally D.randomly 44.A.prevalent B.nonexistent C.available D.extinct 45.A.harmless B.popular C.nutritious D.common 46.A.warns B.unease C.symptoms D.mistakes 47.A.brave B.sophisticated C.wary D.skillful 48.A.infectious B.poisonous C.annoying D.irritating 49.A.relative B.hereditary C.occasional D.natural 50.A.mainly B.definitely C.necessarily D.solely 51.A.behavioral B.human C.social D.emotional 52.A.avoiding B.promoting C.planting D.favoring 53.A.venture B.reason C.risk D.chance 54.A.source B.pool C.focus D.topic 55.A.flexible B.mild C.increased D.threatening 第二节 (共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式. Stepping outside the house, they saw flowers smiling in the sunshine and butterflies dancing in the garden. The family survived on growing seasonal plants. While they lived a very happy life, Daisy did not love the wonderful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move to the city and enjoy the urban life. She had a fantasy to go shopping, try on fashionable dresses, watch movies, and eat in fancy restaurants and cafes. However, there was hardly any chance that Daisy’s family would move to the city as they had everything in the village. One day, Daisy felt asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her deceased (已故的) grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her grandmother granted (同意给予) her a wish. Daisy requested her that she would love to enjoy the city life as she always desired. Grandmother understood the desire of Daisy, but still wanted to convince her that peaceful village life was better than city life. She told Daisy, “Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?” Daisy, without hearing the concerns, asked her grandmother to grant the wish. The grandmother granted her the wish but with a condition. Daisy was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to village. Daisy agreed. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Daisy then found herself in the city with her friends. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Suddenly, she woke up as her brother was calling her for lunch. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________
