explained the situation.“We have a passenger on the plane who's blind and deaf,”
she said. The passenger seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the
flight attendants couldn't understand what he needed, according to PEOPLE magazine.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help with her dyslexia and

interview.“You could tell Cook was very excited to have someone he could speak to,

schools, meet US teenagers, and form the impressions of the real America. At the same
time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn

Here is a twoway student exchange in action.Fred, 19, spent last year in Germany

Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two

different from what he had expected—much harder.Students rose respectfully when the
teacher entered the classroom. They studied fourteen subjects instead of the six
subjects that are usual in the United States. There were almost no extracurricular
activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's words were the laws, and all

simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his
idea.“I suppose I should criticize (批评) American schools,” he said.“The school
life is far too easy for us.But I have to say that I like it very much.In Germany

When I was about 10, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped
to speak to Mr Lee.I knew I could see Mr Lee anytime around the neighborhood, so I
just stood there. After we passed him, my mother stopped and said something
unforgettable.“You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody you know
without opening your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wag its tail when it passes
you on the street.”That sentence sounded simple but it made me become who I am.
At work, I used to say hello to the president of the company and ask him how
our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people in the cafe and people who cleaned
the buildings, and asked them how their children were doing, for every single person
deserves to be accepted, no matter how humble(卑微的) they are.I remember that after
a few years of passing by the president, I had the courage to ask him for a chat.We
had a great talk.At some point, when I asked him how far he thought I could go in
his company, he said that if I wanted to, I could get all the way to his seat.
I've become vicepresident, but that hasn't changed how I treat people.I speak
to people wherever I am.Speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and
it lets them come into mine, too.The day you speak to someone who has his head down
and then see him lift it up and smile, you will realize how powerful it is just to
open your mouth and say hello.

I learned it was indeed the case.
“Now there's one old man,” she told me.“He comes here almost every week and
tastes each one of the puddings, though he never buys anything.I remember him from
last year.Well, let him come if he wants it, and he is welcome to it.And what's more,
I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if
he needs it all right, and I suppose they can afford it.”
She was still speaking when an elderly man walked up to the counter and began
looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest.
“Why, that's the very man I've been telling you about,” whispered the salesgirl,
and then turned to him: “Would you like to taste them, sir? Here's a spoon for you
to use.”
The elderly gentleman, who was poor but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and
began to taste one after another of the puddings.“This is quite good. This is not
bad either, but a little too heavy.”
Among the crowd of happy, richlooking shoppers, the little black figure of the
old man seemed pitiful and out of place, and in a burst of kindness, I went up to
him and said: “Pardon me, sir, will you do me a favor? Let me purchase you one of
these puddings. It would give me such pleasure.”

Paragraph 1:
The old man jumped back as if he had been bitten, and the blood rushed to his
face.“Excuse me,” he said, with more dignity than I would have thought considering
his appearance, “I do not believe I have the pleasure of knowing you.Undoubtedly
you have mistaken me for someone else.” And with a quick decision he turned to the
salesgirl and said in a loud voice, “Kindly pack up this one here for me.I will take
it with me.” He pointed at one of the largest and most expensive puddings.
Paragraph 2:
The salesgirl took down the pudding from its stand and started to parcel it up.
Meanwhile, the elderly gentleman pulled out a worn little pocketbook and began

counting out shillings and pennies on the counter. To save his “honor” he was forced
into a purchase which he could not possibly afford. How I longed for the power to take
back my insensitive words! It was too late though, and I felt that the kindest thing
I could do now would be walk away. And that was the last time I saw or heard of him.Now
he can never go there to taste puddings any more.
