Kevin: Against
Each coconut was wrapped in clear, thin plastic. Isn’t
this the most stupid example of packaging ever?
But it’s completely wasteful and unnecessary. It
already has its own packaging. It’s got a tough shell
that’s almost impossible to break!
Listen for understanding
Kevin: Against
A lot of the plastic used in packaging never recycles.
It’s terrible for the environment. Our oceans are full
of plastic waste, and animals and birds end up
swallowing the plastic and dying as a result.
Listen for understanding
Alicia: For
But there is a reason for this. Supermarkets want to
make sure that coconuts reach the consumer in the
best condition. The packaging helps to keep the
product fresh, and the product will last longer.
Listen for understanding
Alicia: For
But the plastic wrapping also has other uses. It stops
coconut hairs from getting into other food during
transport. And it keeps the coconut clean.
But let’s be realistic. We still need packaging. We just
need to use the right kind of packaging.

Role play the conversation
S1: I went to buy some coconuts at a local supermarket yesterday
and I found each coconut was wrapped in clear, thin plastic. Isn’t
it the most stupid thing to do?
S2: I wouldn’t say it’s stupid. The supermarkets probably just want to
keep the coconuts fresh and make them last longer.
S1: But coconuts have their own natural packaging
already, which is very tough and hard to break.
Role play the conversation
S2: But the plastic packaging can also prevent coconut hairs getting
into other food and keep everything clean.
S1: Then what about the environment? A lot of the plastic used in
packaging is not recyclable and a lot of animals end up
swallowing the plastic and die from it.
S1: I have to say that I agree with you on that. We should use the
right kind of packaging.

produces lots of unrecyclable packaging. What solutions do you have
to this problem? Use the expressions we learnt to give suggestions.
Example:
I think as a consumer, we should choose to buy from the stores that
use more recyclable packaging materials…
Discussion
I think as a consumer, we should choose to buy from the stores that
use more recyclable packaging materials. We can also try combining
orders and requiring items to be shipped together. I also suggest the
online shop owners take packaging waste into consideration. They
can give a packaging option that items are delivered with easy-to-
open, recyclable packaging without any additional boxes or envelopes
even on some additional charges.
