Find Your Adventure at the Space and Aviation (航空) Center
If you’re looking for a unique adventure, the Space and Aviation Center (SAC) is the place to
be. The Center offers programs designed to challenge and inspire with hands-on tasks and lots of
fun.
More than 750,000 have graduated from SAC, with many seeking employment in
engineering, aviation, education, medicine and a wide variety of other professions. They come to
camp, wanting to know what it is like to be an astronaut or a pilot, and they leave with real-world
applications for what they’re studying in the classroom.
For the trainees, the programs also offer a great way to earn merit badges (荣誉徽章). At
Space Camp, trainees can earn their Space Exploration badge as they build and fire model rockets,
learn about space tasks and try simulated (模拟) flying to space with the crew from all over the
world. The Aviation Challenge program gives trainees the chance to earn their Aviation badge.
They learn the principles of flight and test their operating skills in the cockpit ( 驾 驶 舱) of a
variety of flight simulators. Trainees also get a good start on their Wilderness Survival badge as
they learn about water-survival and land-survival through designed tasks and their search and
rescue of “downed” pilot.
With all the programs, teamwork is key as trainees learn the importance of leadership and
being part of a bigger task.
All this fun is available for ages 9 to 18. Families can enjoy the experience together, too, with
Family Camp programs for families with children as young as 7.
Stay an hour or stay a week — there is something here for everyone!

When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally.
The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal,
lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell
100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.
Her owner Mike Holden panicked and celled the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in
seconds . Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding
her alive after a 90-minute search.
Three days later, a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his
holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had
died in the most beautiful part of the country.
For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken . Then, one day, the phone rang and
Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog bark.
A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he
sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy.
The dog had initially been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)but had survived by drinking
water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which
had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a
very dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added.
It was ,as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.

China Science Daily announced Thursday that it has used software to automatically generate
news stories about the latest discoveries from the world's leading science journals. The robot
science reporter, called “Xiaoke”, was co-created by the newspaper and researchers from Peking
University in about half a year.
It is the latest case of Chinese news organizations using computer technology to create the
content. According to its inventors, Xiaoke has generated over 200 stories based on the English
abstract of papers published in journals such as Science, Nature, Cell and The New England
Journal of Medicine.
Before publication, the automatically generated articles will go through a review process. A
group of scientists and the newspaper's editors will check the content or give supplementary (补充
的) information.
Zhang Mingwei, head of the program and vice editor-in-chief of the newspaper, said
inventors would make Xiaoke a “cross-linguistic (跨语言的) academic secretary” to help Chinese
scientists overcome language barriers and have easy and quick access to the latest scientific
advances in English-language publications. Lead researcher Wan Xiaojun, of Peking University in
charge of the system's design and technology, stressed that the content generation tool could do far
more than translation. According to Wan, Xiaoke is good at selecting complex words and
sentences, which can help turn articles full of confusing technical terms into easy and readable
news reports.
The readers of the robot reporter are not limited to professionals and they also include the
general public, the inventors said. Science reporting is important in spreading information about
discoveries and in popularizing knowledge to people.
28.What can we learn about “Xiaoke”?
A.It is a professional translator.
B.It has the most advanced AI.
C.It can make up fiction stories.
D.It generates science news reports.
29.What do people need to do to improve Xiaoke's work?
A.Upgrade the artificial intelligence.
B.Select complex words and sentences.

Thinking About Thinking
As a public school superintendent( 督 导 ), I believe the best way to prepare students for
colleges and careers is to focus on providing instructional programs and opportunities that help
them become good thinkers. To do this, teachers and actually everyone else in a community,
should play a role as a “cognitive coach” to students, helping develop good thinkers among our
youth.
The best way for you to become a cognitive coach is to seek out and engage school children and
adolescents in meaningful conversations. The objective here is to get kids talking about what they
think, how they feel, and what they believe whenever and wh erever you may find them. It may be
in a classroom. It may be at the grocery store. It may be at a basketball game. It doesn’t matter
where as long as you engage students in a topical conversation and, hopefully, even a debate.
Mainly, you want to encourage students to voice their opinion about things. Get them to take a
position on “this thing, or that thing,” and ask them to support their position with evidence.
Curiously enough, the simple process of engaging students in real life conversations and debates
will serve to strengthen what they have learned in the classroom, and help them create their own
knowledge about a subject or a topic.
Learning indicates that a student has been exposed to material, understands the material, and can
recall the information. Knowledge, on the other hand, goes beyond recall and includes information
processing, application to other situations, consideration of meaning, and contrasting with other
concepts. Naturally, the topic of conversation you engage in with one of your learners will differ
from student to student, and in the level of complexity based on child’s age and developmental
level. Even a kindergartener has an opinion about things that are going on in his or her life.
Engaging in conversation with any members of your learning community in ways that get at what
they have learned and what they know will help them develop higher order reasoning skills.
A student’s synthetic thinking(综合思维) process occurs when a respected adult asks a question,
第 9 页 共 13 页
particularly a question that requires reflection. I think all adults in a community have a
responsibility to help children with this process, with the goal of producing independent thinkers.
31. According to writer, what most helps develop students’ thinking?
A. Enlarging one’s knowledge.
B. Learning from respected adults.
C. Attending instructional programs.
D. Making evidence-based arguments.
33. Which is the best question raised by a cognitive coach?
A. What have you learnt recently?
B. Will you pay by the credit card?
C. Where are you going this weekend?
D. How do you like this basketball team?
34. The writer mentions a kindergartener in Paragraph 3 in order to _____.
A. emphasize the importance of being a good thinker
B. suggest that education should start at an early age
C. prove that even children have their own ways of thinking
D. explain the necessity of choosing proper conversation topics
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To state an education idea.
B. To assess a teaching strategy.
C. To introduce a learning method.
D. To compare different education methods.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a
month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was
coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was
just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop.
He said to himself, “I know what I will do, I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How
many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses
were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said, “my mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend
much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her
favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric
was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸

roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your
dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store.
It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that,
with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a
graveyard(墓地).
