What Theresa Loe is doing proves that a large farm isn’t prerequisite for a modern
grow-your-own lifestyle. On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles, Loe and her family grow, can
(装罐)and preserve much of the food they consume.
Loe is a master food preserver, gardener and canning expert. She also operates a website,
where she shares her tips and recipes, with the goal of demonstrating that every has the ability to
control what’s on their plate.
Loe initially went to school to become an engineer, but she quickly learned that her
enthusiasm was mainly about growing and preparing her own food. “I got into cooking my own
food and started growing my own herbs (香草) and foods for that fresh flavor,”she said. Engineer
by day, Loe learned cooking at night school. She ultimately purchased a small piece of land with
her husband and began growing their own foods.
“I teach people how to live farm-fresh without a farm,” Loe said. Through her website Loe
emphasizes that “anybody can do this anywhere.” Got an apartment with a balcony(阳台)? Plant
some herbs. A window? Perfect spot for growing. Start with herbs, she recommends, because
“they’re very forgiving.” Just a little of the herbs “can take your regular cooking to a whole new
level,” she added. “I think it’s a great place to start.” “Then? Try growing something from a seed,
she said, like a tomato or some tea.”
Canning is a natural extension of the planting she does. With every planted food. Loe noted,
there’s a moment when it’s bursting with its absolute peak flavor. “I try and keep it in a time
capsule in a canning jar,” Loe said. “Canning for me is about knowing what’s in your food,
knowing where it comes from.”
In addition to being more in touch with the food she’s eating, another joy comes from passing
this knowledge and this desire for good food to her children: “Influencing them and telling them
your opinion on not only being careful what we eat but understanding the bigger picture,” she
said, “that if we don’t take care of the earth, no will.”
24.The underlined word “prerequisite” (Pare. 1) is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. recipe
B. substitute
C. requirement
D. challenge
25.Why does Loe suggest starting with herbs?
A. They are used daily.
B. They are easy to grow.
C. They can grow very tall
D. They can be eaten uncooked

26.According to Loe, what is the benefit of canning her planted foods?
A. It can preserve their best flavor
B. It can promote her online sales
C. It can better her cooking skills
D. It can improve their nutrition
27.What is the“the bigger picture” (Para. 6) that Loe wishes her children to understand?
A. The knowledge about good food
B. The way to live a grow-our-own life
C. The joy of getting in touch with foods

A drug designed entirely by artificial intelligence is about to enter clinical trials for the first
time. The drug, which is intended to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (强迫症), was
discovered using AI systems from Oxford-based biotech company Exscientia. While it would
usually take around four and a half years to get a drug to this stage of development, Exscientia
says that by using the AI tools it's taken less than 12 months.
The drug, known as DSP-1181, was created by using algorithms (算法) to examine potential
compounds, checking them against a huge database of parameters, including a patient's genetic
factors. Speaking to the BBC, Exscientia chief executive Professor Andrew Hopkins described the
trials as a “key milestone in drug discovery” and noted that there are “billions” of decisions
needed to find the right molecules ( 分 子 ) for a drug, making their eventual creation a “huge
decision”. With AI, however, “the beauty of the algorithms is that they are unknowable, so can be
applied to any disease”.
We've already seen multiple examples of AI being used to diagnose illness and analyze
patient data, so using it to engineer drug treatment is an obvious progression of its place in
medicine. But the AI-created drugs do bring about some relevant questions. Will patients be
comfortable to take medicine designed by a machine? How will these drugs differ from those
developed by humans alone? Who will make the rules for the use of AI in drug research? Hopkins
and his team hope that these and a great many other questions will be explored in the trials, which
will begin in March.
28.What is special about the drug designed by AI?
A.It's a better cure for OCD.
B.It has no side effect on humans.
C.Its development takes less time.
D.It doesn't need clinical trials.
29.Which is a key factor in creating the drug according to Paragraph 2 ?

30.How does Hopkins feel about the way of drug creation?
A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful.
C.Disappointed. D.Puzzled.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Medical Trials by AI
B.An Example in Medical Trials
C.A Creation in AI Development
D.AI-designed Drugs to Be on Trial

How many times a day do you check your email? When you wake up? Before bed? A dozen
times in between? The technology that was supposed to simplify our lives has become the vital
time-suck: the average teen spends more than seven hours a day using technological devices, plus
an additional hour just text-messaging friends.
The advantage of technological devices is connectedness: email lets us respond on the go, and we
are in touch with more people during more hours of the day than at any other time in history. But
is it possible we’re more lonely than ever, too? That’s what MIT professor Sherry Turkle observes
in her new book, Alone Together, a f ascinating portrait of our changing relationship with
technology. Turkle details the ways technology has redefined our comprehension of closeness and
loneliness—and warns us of the danger of accepting such virtual(虚拟的) relationships in place of
lasting emotional connections.
For Turkle, the biggest worry is the effect all these shallow connections have on our development.
Is technology offering us the lives we want to live? “We’re texting people at a distance,” says
Turkle, “We’re using lifeless objects to convince ourselves that even when we’re alone, we feel
together. And then when we’re with each other, we put ourselves in situations where we are
alone—constantly on our mobile devices. It’s what I call a perfect storm of confusion about what’s
important in our human connections.”
What can’t be denied is that technology, whatever its faul ts, makes life a whole lot easier. It
allows us to communicate with more people in less time and makes conversation simple. But it
can also be seductive(具有诱惑性的), providing more stimulation than our natural lives. There
are usually some unhealthy videos online which remove teenagers’ attention from their
schoolwork. Besides, some online activities make people addicted, which occupied their daily life
and affected their ability to form real-world relationships.“Technology can be more immediately
satisfying than the labor of building an intimate relationship,” said one highschool student, “Every
time I text, I start to have some happy feelings.”
第 9 页 共 13 页
But are any of those feelings equal to the kind we fe el when engaged in real, face-to-face
communication? Online, you can neglect others’ feelings. In a text message, you can avoid eye
contact. A number of studies have found that this generation of teens is less sympathetic than ever.
That doesn’t spell disaster, says Turkle—but,
32. From the first paragraph we can infer that_________.
A. email checking helps people wake up early
B. technological device production has been simplified
C. using technological devices costs teens much time
D. people communicate mainly by text-messaging now
33. Turkle’s new book mainly discussed________.
A. ways to draw a fascinating portrait
B. how technology influences human relationships
C. the dangers of accepting emotional connections
D. the advantages of technology
34. What worries Turkle most is that more and more people are_________.
A. starting to accept emotional connections in place of virtual connections
B. convincing themselves by using fewer lifeless objects in connections
C. dropping the use of technological devices for connection with each other
D.being affected by the shallow connections through the mobile devices
35. Which of the following is True according to the passage?
A. Others’ feelings can be ignored in online communication.
B. No stimulation is provided in natural life connections.
C. People always send text messages to avoid eye contact.
D. It may be a disaster that teens are less sympathetic than ever.

Criticism (批评) is harmful to healthy relationships. It’s okay to express disappointment if
someone is behaving in a way that hurts you. 36. The following are some ways to catch criticism
before it begins.
第 10 页 共 13 页
37. Before you criticize, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything at all.
If someone did something to get on your nerves, would you really need to point it out? Sometimes,
it’s best to let small rudeness go Take a few deep breaths and leave the room instead of criticizing.
Be realistic. Critical people often have very high expectations of those around them. Your
tendency to criticize may come from expecting too much from others. Sometimes you may find
yourself consistently annoyed or disappointed with others. 38.
Separate the individual from their actions. Critical people often focus on the negative aspects
of a situation or a person, failing to see good qualities alongside negative ones. If you find
yourself making assumptions about a person’s character, stop yourself. 39. We all behave poorly
sometimes, but a single action is not a reflection of character.
Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from how you’re choosing to see a
situation. 40. However, the vast majority of people have good qualities that outweigh the bad
ones. Try to focus on a person’s positive qualities over their negative ones.
A. Never criticize others.
B. Think before you speak.
C. Everyone has drawbacks and imperfections.
D. It may be a good idea to adjust your expectations.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a
month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was
coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was
just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop.
He said to himself, “I know what I will do, I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How
many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses
were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said, “my mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend
much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her
favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric
was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸
运的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s
roses.
第 13 页 共 13 页
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your
dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store.
It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that,
with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a
graveyard(墓地).
