Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
1. When a chimp smiles, how does he likely feel?
Nervous.
Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
Man: That’s right. This is true of many animals.
However, it is especially true of chimps.
Woman: In what way?
Man: Well, when we humans are worried or frightened,
we sometimes smile in a nervous way. Chimps also look
as though they are smiling when they are nervous.
*Listen to this part and find out the answer to the question.
Listen and check
2. Why does Max think a chimp smiles when faced with an
enemy?
Perhaps they are trying to look friendly so the enemy
will not hurt them.
Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
*Listen to this part and find out the answer to the question.
Man: ...Chimps also look as though they are smiling when
they are nervous.
Woman: Why is that?
Man: Perhaps they are trying to look friendly so an enemy
will not hurt them. Now, what do we often do when we are
angry?
Listen and check
3. How are humans and chimps alike in the way they express
anger?
We stand tall and make noise.
Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
*Listen to this part and find out the answer to the question.
Man: Now, what do we often do when we are angry?
Woman: We stand tall and put our hands on our sides.
Sometimes we shout.
Man: Exactly. We want to look bigger and stronger.
Chimps do the same thing — they stand up, move their
arms around, throw things about, and make noise.

4. What do chimps do to show they love their babies?
They hold their babies and kiss them.
Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
*Listen to this part and find out the answer to the question.
Woman: What about in family relationships?
Man: That’s very interesting. Both chimp and human
mothers hold their babies and kiss them. A similar thing is
true for adults. To show that we accept and love each other,
among our main expressions are hugging and kissing.
Listen and check
5. What does a bigger chimp do to make a smaller chimp feel
safe?
The bigger chimp will touch or kiss the smaller chimp to
make it feel safe.
Listening activity: Listen to the interview again and
answer the questions.
*Listen to this part and find out the answer to the question.
Man: ... When a stronger chimp frightens a smaller chimp, the
smaller chimp will hold his head low. The bigger one will then
touch him or kiss him to make him feel safe.
Woman: So chimps are just like people!
Man: Or, we’re just like chimps.

1. Are animals different from or similar to each other in how
they show their emotions with their body language?
2. How should you react when you see certain kinds of body
language from animals?
*Choose at least three emotions, such as fear, joy, and sadness.
Then discuss these questions.
Speaking Activity 1
1. Are animals different from or similar to each other in how
they show their emotions with their body language?
Animals are often quite similar to each other in the ways
that they show their emotions with body language. For
example, when many animals are afraid they try to make
themselves appear larger. Some snakes make their mouths
and heads appear larger, and elephants may extend their ears.
Speaking Activity 1
to make sth. bigger or longer
2. How should you react when you see certain kinds of body
language from animals?
For example, if a dangerous animal is showing signs that
it is afraid or angry, you should carefully and slowly
begin to walk away. A sudden movement can alarm them
even further, and you want to show that you are harmless
by moving slowly.
Speaking Activity 1
to make someone feel
worried or frightened
*After your discussion, give a short presentation on animal
body language to the class.
EXAMPLE
Animals often use body language to show their emotions.
For example, when it wants to show fear and tell you to stay
away, a bear will slap the ground. This is very different from
a dog, which will put its tail between its legs to show fear...
Speaking Activity 2
to hit someone with the flat
part of your hand
*Based on what you have learnt, write a short passage
with the title of “Animal Body Language” .
