The situations that we’ve learnt in Unit 5
A
What shall we do if we see someone injured in an
accident?First aid is the most necessary thing we
should give to him.
When we do first aid, we must pay attention to
three important things. First we must make sure
whether the person is still breathing. Open his
mouth to see if there is any food at the back of his
mouth. Then try our best to start the person’s
breathing within a few minutes, or he will die. Try to
repeat the mouth-to-mouth way as often as is
necessary. Finally if we see a person bleeding badly
we must press a handkerchief onto the bleeding
point and hold it to stop the bleeding. For if a
person loses one-third of his blood he may die.
First aid is also important in our daily life, for
accidents may happen at home. For example, if a person
is bitten by an animal, we must have him wash the
wound with cold running water before going to see a
doctor. When a person is burnt or cut, we should let him
wash the area of his burn or cut under the cold tap and
put a piece of dry clean cloth over it. But if it is serious,
go to the hospital for medical care. In a word, every one
of us should manage to know something about first aid
so we could save other people’s lives.
1.What should we do if a person is injured in an accident?
A. We should send for a doctor at once.
B. We should call First Aid Centre.
C. We should let him move to see whether he can walk.
D. First aid must be given to him immediately.
2. According to Paragraph 2, there are ____ important
things for us to do.
A. two B. three
C. as many as possible D. only one
3. What does “the mouth-to-mouth way” mean?
A. Lay the person on his back, close his nose with your
fingers and breathe into his mouth.
B. Close the person’s mouth and breathe into his nose.
C. Lay the person on his back and breathe into his
mouth once.
D. Let the person sit and try to get him breathe as often
as possible.
4.Whether first aid works depends on____.
A. our skills B. our efforts
C. different situations D. the money
B
You may need to give first aid. First aid is deed as the
emergency care given to a sick or injured person. The
goals of first aid are to prevent death and to prevent
injuries from becoming worse.
Each emergency condition is different. However, the
following rules apply to any kind of emergency.
* Be aware of your limitations. Do not try to do more than
you are able to. Nor should you do things if you are
unfamiliar with them. Do what you can under the
conditions at that time.
* Stay calm. Acting calmly will help the victim feel safe.
*Take a quick look to see if the victim is bleeding, and if
there is a pulse.
* Keep the victim lying down and do not move him or her.
You could make an injury worse if you move the victim.
* Take necessary emergency steps.
* Call for help or ask someone to make the EMS system start.
* Do not remove clothing unless you have to. If clothing must
be removed, tear the clothes along the seams .
* Keep the victim warm. Cover the victim with a blanket.
Coats and sweaters can be used if a blanket can not be
found.
* Reassure the victim. Explain what if happening and that
help has been called.
* Do not give the victim any food or fruit.
* Keep the bystanders away from the victim. Bystanders want
to have a look, offer advice, and say something about the
victim’s condition. The victim may believe that the
condition is worse than it really is.
1.The most important purpose of first aid is _____.
A. to stop death B. to keep the injured person calm
C. to help the victim stay in a safe place
D. to see if the injured person is still living
2. When a person is badly injured on the road, you
should______.
A. act worriedly and hurriedly
B. do whatever you want to do freely
C. not move him or her
D. make the injured person stand up
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the
passage?
A. You should do more than what you are able to do to help an
injured person in emergency conditions.
B. Don’t remove the clothes of the injured person no matter
what happens.
C. It is necessary to cover the victim with a blanket.
D. If the injured person feels hungry, you should give him or
her some food.
4. Why should bystanders be kept away from the victim
according to the passage?
A. Because bystanders can prevent the victim from receiving
first aid.
B. Because what bystanders say can make the victim think
the condition is very bad.
C. Because the victim doesn’t want to accept the advice of
bystanders.
D. Because the victim hates being surrounded by bystanders
5. The main purpose of the passage is to tell_______.

Useful expressions in two passages
In most northern countries, there are some storms in
summer or autumn. A storm comes suddenly and you can’t
find a place to hide sometimes. A storm is often followed by
lightning so it’s always dangerous during a storm.
You might feel safe inside your home during a storm. But
about 20% of the persons who are killed by lightning are
inside their houses. It goes through electrical wires(电线),
through water pipes, down chimneys, and
over phone lines. Sometimes it doesn’t kill
people with an electric shock(电击) ,
but by setting their houses on fire.
How to stay safe in a storm(知识百科)
If you stay outside, you are also in danger. Many people
get hit by lightning when they stand in an open place or
under a big tree or something wet. In the house, don’t use the
phone, the computer or anything else that uses electricity.
Well, what can we do to protect ourselves? Take the
following advice:
★ Stay inside during a storm. Lightning and wind can
damage power lines, so it’s very dangerous to stay outside
during a storm.
★ Use flashlights instead of candles. Using candles during
a storm can start a big fire.
★Tell adults to call the power company if the light goes out.
★ Tell adults to watch out for power lines when they are
cleaning up outside. If power lines are running through
damaged trees, call the power company for help.

You are my sunshine
The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

So when you come back and make me

参考范文 First aid for animal bites
Animal bites like dog and cat bites are most common nowadays.
They will cause signs and symptoms such as swelling, pain, itching,
and bleeding, which bring the victim a lot of suffering.
First aid can make a difference before emergency medical help
arrives. It can be used for animal bites that cause scratches on the
skin but do not cause a severe allergic reaction. You should do as
the following:
Firstly, wash the bite area right away with soap and warm
water for 5 minutes. If the bite is deep, place the wound under
gently running water for 10 minutes. Then dry the wound with a
clean towel.
Secondly, if the wound is swollen, apply ice covered in a towel to
it for 10 minutes.
Thirdly, get medical care.
