Can you give my students some
suggestions on surfing the line?
14:57:48
The best idea is not to surf the
line.For students,websites are not the
ways to study, they are only for
entertainment,yes or no?If some
students sank into playing,my
advice is not to say anything, but say
in formal situations.

• Computer is a great invention of human. It is
widely used nowadays, from industrial
companies to education of pupils and college
students. As a PhD student in the University
of Hong Kong, I find computers are extremely
useful in every aspect of my academic and
daily life.
• First of all, to know what other researchers
have done, we have to check the online
database. A search engine I frequently refer to
is Google Scholar, scholar.google.com.Once
you know the researcher’s name, you can
find what he has published, the name,
publishing date and co-authors of the articles,
• even the full text! Even if you have no idea
about who is important in a particular research
area, you can find an immense amount of
information via Google.
• Secondly, exchanging information and ideas
with your supervisor, collaborators and peers is
another important usage of computers. QQ is
famous in China, which has changed the
communication regulations of Chinese. I write
email to others often. For the researchers, there
are websites that aim to link them together, like
researchgate.com, on which you can
communicate with other research all over the
world.
• Then, you have to rely on computers to
compute the data of your experiment, so as to
examine your hypotheses. There is always
tremendous data. You just cannot calculate by
hand.
• When it comes to the paper writing stage, it is
convenient to accomplish and revise your
literature using a computer. You can always
seek help from the grammar checking function
of Microsoft Word and online dictionaries.
When you have it published, others can share
and learn from your articles by searching and
downloading them from the internet.
• Students of HKU take advantage of computers
almost every day. They read, write and
communicate via computers. The University
prepares a great number of public computers
to satisfy the students’ need.
• High school students might not be able to use
computers everyday. When you are sitting in
front of a computer, I suggest not spend all
your time on computer games, but learn
something useful for your future, like
programming skills.
Review by Task-based Reading.
• Read the passage about computers and
complete the outline.
1. communicate
2. exchange
3. e-mail
4. way
5. higher
6. contact
7. common
8. Despite
9. careful
10. private

Homework
Write a passage about the
proper use of computers.
Remember advice from the PHD in HKU
I also suggest students in middle schools
and primary school not spend much time
on computers. According to a recent study
by my supervisor Prof. Tan LH, the more
time a pupil spending in front of a
computer, the worse reading ability he
might have.
