On Christmas, there are many sights and sounds that are familiar to the west in Japan, the Santas in ads, the big
displays and the Christmas music in the stores, the lights on the houses, stockings full of toys, and decorated trees.
(Ⅰ)
The Japanese explanation of Christmas is something rather different. For one thing, Christmas is more of a fun
start to the holiday, New Year's Day.
In Japan, Christmas actually isn't an official holiday at all. Most people have to work that day unless it is a
Saturday or Sunday. As a result, people celebrate on Christmas Eve.
在日本,圣诞节前夕出去吃饭是一种流行的习俗。It's the ideal time for couples to go out for a special evening.
They dress up, give each other presents and enjoy a delicious meal. Christmas seems like Valentine's Day (情人节) in
the west.
(Ⅱ)
The favorite dessert is “Christmas cake” which hardly exists (存在) in the west. Stores everywhere compete to sell
their own unique cakes in the days leading up to Christmas.
The food is an important part of the Christmas celebrations. Japanese usually eat fried or teriyaki chicken, fried
potatoes, cheese-stuffed wonton even pizza instead of western baked ham and roast turkey.
(Ⅲ)
It's usual to give presents called Oseibo to bosses, workmates, teachers or other people that aren't family
members or friends, showing thanks to people who have serviced for you.
As in the west, gift-giving is a big part of the holiday, but it takes on its own character in Japan. Romantic
partners may give each other flowers, cute toys or rings and other jewelry (珠宝). Parents may give presents to their
young children. The idea here is that the gifts come from Santa Claus, just like in the west.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first,
pour out any leftover(残留物) into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin; third,
throw the single-use cup and straw(吸管)into a dry waste bin.
Sound complex? You'll have to get used to it. People in Shanghai are required to sort their garbage according to
strict rules. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar garbage-sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese
cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year. Most of this waste is buried (填埋) in landfills(垃圾填理场),
which may pollute water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while
wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer(肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently, we need to sort our
garbage.
Can't garbage-processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and
costs lots of money. 如果我们每一个人能分类自己的垃圾,事情会变得容易得多。Besides, the troublesome task of
sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?
How to make less waste
·Know your true wants and needs. Avoid shopping just for fun.
·Refuse single-use items like chopsticks or cups.
·Bring your own bags and water bottles with you.
·Repair things instead of throwing them away.
