A gift card is a card that is issued(发行) by a store. These cards are big money
makers for stores. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they
often see other things to buy, and they spend more money than the gift card is worth.
Unused cards are another reason. Stores make millions of dollars because large
numbers of people never use their cards. They either lose them, forget about them,
or decide that it’s not worth the effort.
Gift card are becoming very popular in many countries around the world. In the US, they are one of the
most popular kinds of gifts. Why? People love the convenience--- gift cards are easy to buy and easy to use,
either in the store or online. The recipient can choose his or her own gift and the giver does not have to worry
about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. A real gift is a better reminder of the
person who gave it. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, “I spend some time trying to find the right
gift for you because I care about you.” Often a gift card does not send the same message as a real gift. It may
seem to say, “I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you would really like.”
In today’s world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of
giving gifts, which is to build a closer connection between the gift-giver and the gift-recipient.

We often meet people from different cultures. For successful communication, it’s important to know how
conversational styles are different around the world.
Opening and closing conversation
Different cultures have different ways of greeting people. 1__________________ For example, when North
Americans end a conversation, they often say, “We must get together again soon.” However, this is usually just
a form of politeness and not a real invitation.
Interrupting(打断)
In some parts of the world, people often interrupt each other and express strong opinions. To Northern
Europeans and North Americans, this kind of conversation may sound like an argument, but it is not.
2________________
Use of silence
In Northern America, if there is silence for more than twenty seconds(秒) during a meeting, people become
uncomfortable. 3 However, this doesn’t happen everywhere. In some places, a period of
silence after someone has spoken shows respect(尊重) for the speaker.
Proper topics of conversation
Topics of conversation also differ(不同) around the world. 4 Most North Americans, however,
think family life is a good topic. People in some cultures feel free to ask questions about how much something
costs or how much someone makes. For North Americans, they are not proper topics.
Use of humor
North Americans often use humor to break the ice, or make others feel free comfortable. However, in some
cultures, people think laughing and humor show disrespect. 5.

情景运用(略)
作文:
Never Give up
Many people fail in life because they do not realize how closer they are to success when they give up.In this
picture, we can see a man is cutting earth in a tunnel, hoping to find some diamonds. He makes great efforts in
his work. However, after a long time without getting nothing, he decides to give up, feeling disappointed and
depressed. But in fact he is very close to success when he gives up.
This story tells us a very simple but important piece of truth: we should be confident in what we have chosen
to do and never stop our effort until we succeed.
As a student preparing for the entrance examinations, I should learn a lesson from the man. Just like the
diamonds in the picture, success is just waiting for my last efforts. I have been cutting earth for so many years,
so I will never give up before I succeed.
