This is the SCIENCE IN THE NEWS, I'm Barbara Klein.
Animal experts say one of the world's most beautiful and rare kinds of big cat is
close to disappearing from the wild. A study earlier this year found that about thirty
Amur leopards (豹) still live free. The cats are also called Far Eastern leopards.
Recently, their number has been reduced by one, Some person shot a female
Amur, then beat her to death. The animal's body was discovered last month in the
Barsovy National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Russia.
An official of the World Wildlife Fund, Darron, said this was the third such
killing in the area in the past fives years. Mr, Collins said the death of even one adult
female is a huge loss for the endangered cat, He noted that the killing reduces the
possibility for cubs (幼兽) or young.
It is not clear how many Amur leopards still live free. One population count was
performed in February and March. Wildlife expert Dmitry Pikuuov led this study. It
found evidence of seven to nine males. The study identified three to seven females
without cubs, Four leopards were identified as females with cubs. In all, five or six
cubs were recorded, Six to eight animals could not be identified.
Most of the land where the Amur leopard once lived was in China.New roads and
climate change there threatened the animals. So did hunters who kill big cats for their
body parts.
Mr. Pikuuov says adult Amurs need about five hundred square kilometers with
good forests to survive. He said they also need a large and continuing supply of
animals like deer for food. He believes the answer to saving the Amur leopard is for
governments to provide protected spaces for wildlife.

Few of us haven’t read Cinderella (灰姑娘), the story of a young woman living in
poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it, but
there is a hidden Cinderella in everyone’s heart — we all wish we could achieve
recognition or success after a period of obscurity (默默无闻). Mary Santiago has that
secret dream, too. Her story is featured (特点) in Another Cinderella Story, a film set
in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible.
However, her world changes completely when a famous teenager pop singer, Joey
Parker, appears. Joey is everything but the rest of the boys in her class are not — kind,
handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey’s paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in
love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her
MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of
course, there is a wicked (邪恶的) stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt
and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a
maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn’t get into the top dance
school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even
if that means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists
to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does
not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less
materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.
“The movie takes the Cinderella fairytale as its jumping off point,” writes movie
critic Amber Wilkinson, “The focus is firmly on following your dream.”
29. The first paragraph is mainly to ____________.
A. build interest and lead us to Mary’s secret dream
B. remind us why Cinderella is popular all the years
C. tell us what is the Cinderella Story
D. tell us how interesting the fairy tale Cinderella is
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Joey is just like other boys in Mary’s class.
B. Mary’s mother influences her a lot in singing.
C. Not many people have a dream to be realized.
D. The MP3 player helps Joey in finding Mary.
31. The passage is mainly about ____________.
A. an introduction to a novel B. a review about a film
C. a passage about dreams D. an advertisement of Cinderella
D
Millions of people suffer from motion sickness ( 晕 动 症 ). They have a lot of
activities they fear. They often avoid doing these activities which include
long-distance airplane travel, sea-trips, road-trips, even certain movies and video
games. However, the French company Boarding Ring promises that it has its way to
solve the problem, as long as the users are willing to wear Boarding Glasses!
Why do many people suffer from motion sickness? It is believed that the brain
fails to deal with mixed signals from body parts. For example, when you are looking
at your phone on a moving bus, your inner ear realizes the move but your eyes,
focused on the screen, think you don't move.
Boarding Glasses tries to ease (减轻)motion sickness by making the user's eyes
and ears transmit the same message. After the brain receives the same message, it will
think you are in a moving environment .Though that sounds difficult, the science
behind the glasses is surprisingly simple.
The plastic frames (框架),made up of two round frames on the front and two on
the side are filled with some blue liquid. Any movement can cause the liquid to flow
around the eyes. This allows the eyes to sense the move and send the correct signal to
the brain.
According to Antoine Jeannin, CEO of Boarding Ring, Boarding Glasses has
been tested. The CEO said that over 95 percent of the users felt better after wearing
the glasses. The best part is that Boarding Glasses only has a frame, so a single pair
can be worn among a group of friends, or even an entire family!
32. Why do some people suffer from motion sickness according to the passage?
A. Their eyes can't see the move.
B. Their bodies are in a bad condition.
C. Their ears can't hear in a moving environment.
D. Their brains can't deal with mixed signals from body parts.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The shortcomings of Boarding Glasses.
B. The design for Boarding Glasses' future.
C. The working principle of Boarding Glasses.
D. The response of people wearing Boarding Glasses.
34. Which word can best replace the underlined word “transmit” in paragraph 3?
A. calm B. send C. destroy D. attack
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Boarding Glasses Promises to Ease Motion Sickness
B. Why Do People Dislike Motion Sickness
C. Why Do People Suffer from Motion Sickness
D. Boarding Glasses Can Make You See the World Clearly

How to Make a Complaint in English
Most of us do not enjoy complaining. But sometimes we must do it to get a
solution.36___An effective English complaint often has the following three steps.
Explain the problem
To do it effectively, you must use polite and respectful language.37___For
example, if you are at a restaurant and the server forgets to bring your drink, saying
“You didn’t bring my drink” may be too direct. It may sound critical and cause the
server to become defensive. So you can use phrases to politely explain your problem.
State your feelings
This step is often not necessary.38___Some problems have easy and quick
solutions. For example, politely telling people that they forgot something or
overcharged you usually leads to a speedy solution. But imagine that you are
receiving poor service.39___ In these cases, you need to politely express how you
feel.
40___
The third step is to ask for action to be taken on the problem. This is an important
step. Depending on who the listener is, you or they may need to ask someone else to
take action.
A.Ask for action
B.Blame the problem on them
C.You should avoid complaining
D.It will depend on how bad the problem is

第二节(满分 25 分)

Getting up early has been seen as a good habit since ancient times. Many years
ago, people thought that if we went to bed early and got up early, we would be
energetic (精力充沛的) the whole day. So, getting up early is of great importance to
us all.
In fact, morning is the best time of a day. In the morning, the air is the freshest
and people are usually in the best condition. Many of us may have the experiences
that we memorize some things more quickly and correctly in the morning than any
other time of the day. And it is certain that we find it easier to understand what we
learn. If we get up early and do some morning exercises or only take a short walk in
the morning, without doubt we can build up our bodies and become much healthier.
Also we will have enough time to make a plan and get ready for our work or study of
the day if we get up early. For example, if everyone in the family gets up early, the
wife will have enough time to prepare the breakfast for the whole family. Children
will have enough time to catch the school bus, and the husband will never forget to
change his dirty shirt. Everything is in order. However, if we get up late, we’ll
probably have to do everything in a hurry.
Getting up early is such a good habit that we should try our best to keep it. If we
stick to (坚持) getting up early every day, we will certainly benefit a lot from it.
