Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order
to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a “father's day” was first
proposed there were no Father's Day cards!
父亲节与普遍的误解不同的是，它并非是一个为了帮助贺卡制作厂商销售更多贺

Mrs. John B Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a “father's day” in 1909. Mrs.
Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father William, whose wife died while giving birth
to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn ;and his other five children by
himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an
adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his
children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19,1910 in Washington. And it was in 1966
that President Lyndon Johnson officially declared the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

The idea of observing a day in honor of father was conceptualized by Ms Sonora Smart
Dodd, a loving daughter from Spokane. It so happened that Sonora attended a Mother's
Day Sermon in 1909 and she was struck with the noble idea that society must observe a
day to honor the important contribution made by father in the raising of children.

educated son.
Suddenly a crow（乌鸦）perched on the tree near their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?”
The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son the 2nd time, “What is this?”
The son said, “Father, I have just now told you It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son the 3rd time, “What is this?”

This time the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had
kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When
the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow was sitting on
the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it
was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and
again for 23 times. I did not at all feel annoyed; I rather felt affection for my innocent
child. ”

After reading the diary, the son burst into tears, feeling sorry for what he had done to his
father. He lost his patience with his father when he was asked the same question for the

fourth time. However, compared with him, his father was patient even though he asked

he did so little for his father.
