B To walk is to be human. We' re the only creature that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. In the more than 4 million years that humanity' s ancestors have been u-sing only two legs for walking, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes. But walking is more than just transportation. It also happens to be really good for us. Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine-if done properly—might be the only exercise people need. How much walking should one aim for? You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer(计步器)in Japan. Perhaps because it's a round number and easy to remember, it stuck. Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000 - steps - a - day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal, it’s not a one - size - fits - all recommendation. For instance, a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7, 500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising: It’s in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical activity a week for adults. Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea, too-fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst. 24. Which statement will the author believe? A. Walking 10000 steps a day fits us all who lack exercise. B. Walking is the only exercise that unhealthy people need. C. To be healthy, walking great distances is strongly suggested D. The benefits of walking depend on frequency, intensity and duration 25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. A walking routine B. A round number C. The popular belief D. The pedometer Ads. 26. How much walking should one aim for according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention? A. 4,400 steps a day. B. 7,500 steps a day. C. 10,000 steps a day. D. 150 minutes a day. 27. What is the best tide of the passage? A. The Only Exercise You Need—Walking B. 10,000 - Step Goal Is More Marketing Than Science C. Walking Is One Of The Best Exercises For Health D. Walk Often, Walk Fast And Walk Long C The first thing we notice about new people are their faces. The next time we see these people, we remember them because we remember their faces. This seems like a simple process. However, scientists found that it is not such a simple process. The section of the brain that is responsible for face recognition seems to work differently for different people. Some people have great difficulty remembering and recognizing faces, while others almost never forget a face. Normal babies are born with a natural ability to recognize faces. In fact, their face recognition abilities are much better than their parents. Babies are highly skilled at face recognition at six months. But by nine months, they lose this skill. By nine months, a baby's face - recognition skills are about the same as an adult' s. Unfortunately, some people are not born with this ability to recognize faces. The part of the brain that is responsible for face recognition doesn’t work for them. This condition is called face blindness. People with very severe face blindness cannot even recognize their own faces. In fact, people with this, condition can sometimes be frightened when they look in the minor. They don't recognize their own face, so for a second they are startled when see this unfamiliar face. Face blindness is not always severe. Scientists believe up to 10 percent of the population may be affected by face blindness to some degree, yet many people with mild face blindness might not even know they have it. They have no reason to know they are different from anyone else until someone points it out. This is similar to people with color blindness. Colorblind people can’t see the difference between certain colors such as red and green, until someone tells them that green and red arc two different colors. There is no cure of face blindness. So for the time being, people with face blindness need to find simple techniques to compensate for their problem. They can try to recognize people by their hairstyle, their voice, or their glasses. Hopefully, in the future as scientists learn more about this condition, they will find a cure. 28. What’s the first paragraph mainly about? A. The way to improve one’s face - recognition skills. B. The fact that some people have face - recognition problems. C. The simple process of the brain to recognize others’ faces. D. The importance of face recognition in human communication. 29. When do people have the keen skills of face - recognition? A. At birth. B. In adolescence. C. Half a year old. D. Nine months old. 31. What does the author think of the problem of face blindness? A. People need to take it seriously. B. It affects a great number of people. C. It can be cured in the near future. D. Certain techniques can make up for it. D Over 400 human footprints preserved in volcanic sediment (沉淀物)provide a sign at social life among ancient hunter-gatherers. The impressions, found in northern Tanzania, add up to Africa's largest collection of ancient human footprints, say evolutionary biologist Kevin Hatala of Chatham University in Pittsburgh and colleagues. People walked across a muddy layer of volcanic ashes dating to between 19,100 and 5,760 years ago, the researchers reported on May 14 in Scientific Reports. Dating of a thin rock layer that partly overlaps ( 重 叠 ) the sediment narrows the footprints' age to about 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. Hatala's team analyzed footprint sizes, distances between prints and which way prints pointed. One collection of tracks was made by 17 people walking southwest. Comparisons with modem prints suggest that this group consisted of fourteen women, two men and one young boy. The women may have been searching for foods while a few males visited or accompanied them, the researchers infer. Some present-day hunter-gatherers form lately female food-gathering groups. The study is "a nice piece of work”, although it's hard to specify what people were doing, says geologist Matthew Bennett of Bournemouth University in Poole, England. Many more sets of footprint tracks would be needed to argue convincingly that hunter-gatherers at that time had female food-gathering groups, Bennett says. And it would still be unknown if the women were gathering plants or hunting prey. Other footprint sites present especially promising opportunities for studying ancient behavior, he says. He is involved in work in New Mexico that has uncovered tens of thousands of footprints of humans and other creatures from more than 10,000 years ago. Early results suggest that humans there hunted giant sloths (树 獭).Bennett expects those prints will yield more insights into Stone Age hunting. 32. What does the underlined word "impressions” in the first paragraph mean? A. Thoughts about people or things. B. Collections of volcanic ashes. C. Marks left by creatures or something. D. Behaviors of imitating someone- 33. What do the newly-discovered footprints suggest? A. Ancient hunters were socially organized. B. Ancient male hunters were admired by females. C. Female food-gathering groups were obviously formed. D. Males played a more important role in finding food than females. 34. What can we learn according to the last paragraph? A. The females gathered plants or hunted prey in the Stone Age. B. The footprint tracks have proved female food-gathering groups existed. C. The footprint sites provide a good chance to further study ancient behavior D. The footprints will hardly influence our understanding of Stone Age hunting. 35. What's the best title of the text? A. How Ancient Hunters Gathered Food B. What Ancient Hunan Footprints Were Like C, What Ancient Human Footprints Tell Us D. How Ancient Food-Gathering Groups Cooperated 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项。 Keeping a journal or diary can have tremendous benefits. Your personal journal can become a place to release anger, frustration, sadness and other negative emotions without hurting anyone's feelings. It can also become a record of all your successes, good ideas, and happier moments. 36 Another bonus to keeping a diary or a journal is that you can gain insights about yourself by discovering patterns of behavior. Once you discover them you can make efforts to replace problematic behavior with better choices. 37 Your mental wellbeing can improve as long as you update the diary and re-read it from time to time. 38 Don't leave it where people can find it, learn your inner thoughts, and decide to disobey, to argue with or to offend you. 39 Verbal diaries are not as helpful as written versions. The brain processes information differently when we write and when we read. Speaking into a recorder and listening to it don't achieve the same effect when only one person is involved. Use the method that is most pleasant for you, and if you use the verbal recording option, do it with the thought of eventually changing over to written memories. Keep your diary or journal real, honest, and updated. Record your thoughts and reflect on them from time to time. Many highly accomplished people, including Marie Curie, Mark Twain, and Winston Churchill kept diaries. 40 Imagine what it can do for you. A. Doing so served them well. B. Sharing your Journal h beneficial to your mental fitness. C, Journaling can be done by hand in a notebook or on a keyboard. D. Keeping journals can improve your learning ability significantly. E. Remember dial it’s b private resource, not for public consumption. F. You may end up being more considerate and more focused by journaling. G. A child's voice on the other end spoke to me softly, "Dad, please come hack soon. I miss you so much!” Unconsciously, I knew it was a wrong number once again. I don’t have a single daughter. I just have a six-year-old son. It is not unusual to receive this kind of calls nowadays, so I replied rudely, "You've dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up in anger. During the following days, I got the same call now and then. It disturbed me, so I either rejected her or hung up right away rudely. I couldn’t help complaining about this, “What an impolite girl! How can she call me up over and over again?” How 1 wished the little girl would stop causing any trouble to me some day! Suddenly, the phone rang up again. It was from the same girl- It seemed that she would not give up until she got an answer. She constantly called me up. Even if I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my number from time to time. Eventually I unwillingly answered the phone. 1 heard the weak voice of that little girl, “Dad, please come back now. I miss you so much! Mom told me this was not a wrong number. It is your cell phone number, right? Dad, I am in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. She is tired out from looking after me. Dad, I know you are busy. If you cannot come home, please kiss me again in the phone, OK?” The innocent request was difficult to reject. I made a loud kiss into the phone and heard a weak voice saying, “Thank you.... When I called the number back, a woman answered, “Sorry, sir. I am really sorry to bother you. I did want to call to apologize.” From the woman, I learnt that the girl had bone cancer when she was born, and unfortunately her father died in an accident weeks ago. The little girl suffered from unbearable treatment every day. Feeling painful, she would cry for her dad who had always encouraged her, so her mother gave her a random number. (80 words) I couldn’t wait to ask the woman how her daughter was. The woman thought for a while, saying sadly, “She has gone. You must have kissed her on the phone, and she went with a smile as she tightly held the cell phone with which she could hear her voice...” On hearing this, I couldn’t keep back my sad feeling, tears streaming down my cheeks. I didn’t know what to say, so I slowly hang up my phone, praying for her happiness and health in heaven.
